In a sense, this was a relatively simpler way to play--particularly with the personnel they have. Like you, I'm curious what he'll do against teams comfortable out of possession.

Looked for this comment precisely. It’s an impressive game plan from Dyche but quite convoluted. Usually when a formation/style is this level of difficulty, it takes several games to get everyone on the same page. They not only did it within a week, but against the league leaders.

As an Arsenal fan I've learned not to underestimate Dyche. Biggest thing I noticed was Calvert-Lewin - looked incredible in that system, hold up play was immaculate and probably should have had a goal. If he can stay fit this might be the season we see him explode.

@@scraps7624 The whole point of the video is how Dyche got 2v1 situations against all of Saka, Martinelli, Xhaka and Ødegaard. If anything else, it shows that Nketiah is a little too static for Arsenal in these situations. ESR at the striker position would be able to be more fluid in build up and find spaces in the structure to provide an extra option.
@14loosecannon
@14loosecannon Жыл бұрын
Agree on the full backs, they needed to match the workrate of Everton's wingers and provide more support for the wingers. I also thought it was strange that Xhaka stayed on when we were chasing the game, maybe he should have come off for Trossard and Arsenal move to an aggressive 4-4-2. Easy saying all of this in hindsight though!
@sambitdas8582
@sambitdas8582 Жыл бұрын
While I understand the sentiment of changing things up... I think using fullbacks to gain width, wouldn't have had much of an effect, since the low block (as is beautfully illustrated in the video) would be comprised of pure height and muscle and they could soak up speculative crosses all day long. The squad Arsenal have although electrifying and formidable, haven't reached their pinnacle yet. This match was perhaps a combination of Sean Dyche's master stroke, positing a problem this young Arsenal side couldn't quite solve and one of those days when a tad bit of luck would have been nice for the Gunners. I'm sure Mikel Arteta will be cooking up new stratagems to counter such tactics in the future.

It would have been good to see your thoughts on how sustainable this is when calvert lewin is unavailable, since when maupay came on and replaced him the performance of the team seemed to drop. The 3 in the middle for Everton were superb intelligent play and rotations like having 3 number 8s.

@andrewg3947

@@yankeefanbryson19 I agree that could be a big-ish factor given the amount of effort put in, but the ball seemed to coming back faster since maupay's hold up play just isn't as good as DCL's. This would then be putting more strain on tiring legs, I'm wondering how that strain translates to result over 90mins rather than 20minutes at the end. The midfield was excellent but what gets done when the attack changes? Since the drop off from one to the other looks huge.
@daveolsen9980
@daveolsen9980 Жыл бұрын
I think one way Dyche might try to cope with that if it does become an issue is by playing a 4-4-2, particularly against weaker teams, and moving a midfielder up into the forward line (either Doucoure or Onana) to provide height next to either Maupay or a winger who can play in the front two (Gray or Iwobi, perhaps). Obviously Danjuma would've been a perfect addition to help with this exact problem.

It was just like the Newcastle games no space to play through the lines. Everton played great with 3 midfielders and I'd say we're the better side but we got beat from a set piece that didn't get dealt with after a few warnings from previous corners. How odegaard guarding tarkowski was ever gonna stop anything us beyond me. @@tobiathon80 I think it's because Brexit was sold on (1) nostalgia for the good old days and (2) pride in British culture and not needing continental European culture. Sean Dyche's football reminds people of the olden days when pitches were muddy so the ball was kicked long to a big man up front. British culture is seen as unsophisticated and unpretentious compared to the culture of continental European countries that Brits compare themselves to. Think complex wines vs lager and real ale. Gourmet cuisine of France vs bangers & mash. Like a plate of mashed potatoes and sausages, Dyche's football isn't fancy, but it gets the job done. That's my take on it anyway. Personally I'm not a fan of Brexit politics, but I like Dyche's tactics.

The problem now for Dyche is not the BIG games, it's going to be the lower ranked games where the players have to be concentrated and motivated even more because they will have to be expansive against teams with lower quality in order to score goals. Against Arsenal, it took set pieces to break their defence, Dyche realises that the quality isn't there to finish so they will have to rely on set pieces...but you need to have potency in front of goal in order to survive the Prem, if Calvert Lewin, Gray and Iwobi don't figure that out with their quality, Everton will go down. Headers from a cross can only work so much before teams start to figure that out and nullify it.

7:13 saka should have been cutting inside to take the ball on the move as arsenal were doing regularly early in the season. It makes use of the presser needing to cover odergaard with his cover shadow and not being able to step wider. BUT it requires odergaard decoying to the middle of the field and more communication between white and saka. It would allow odergaard and saka to then progress during the pressing player rotations, and stops arsenal being stuck out wide. Not my own armchair analysis, just analysis of arsenal gameplay they've already implemented but have shifted away from as opponents have shifted to the lower block. Dyche has given the blueprint to the rest of the league on stopping Arteta's system. He knew how Arteta would be setting up, snuffed it out impressively. Everton were getting so many turnovers and counter breaks, Arsenal midfielders were expending alot of stamina getting back to win the ball, Nketiah ending up getting super isolated and Martinelli's lack of drive post wc was exposed. Arteta better learn from this quickly cuz Plan A to Plan B has to happen much faster.

As an arsenal fan I would've like to see mikel take more attack minded approach with his subs or even change the formation to a 334 so arsenal could've overwhelmed the mid field. It is a high risk move, but a high reward as well...

@@cogitoy7692 Absolutely. I'm an Arsenal fan and we could easily lose this game 3-0. Good wake up call for Arteta. Tactics should have changed at half time. It would have been better if we could just sit back and break them on the counter attack. Everton executed the plan perfectly. Fair play to them.

Great assessment. It would be better if you stopped switching back and forward between the pitch and yourself when explaining tactics. Just stick to showing the pitch, because showing yourself adds nothing and the flow of the play you are explaining tends to be lost. Thanks.

The way teams like Chelsea, Man City and Man United collect players isn't good for league or the sport. They basically just hoard world class players, many of whom don't even play or just play the occasional cup match. That's a lot talent rotting away. There has to be some limit on roster size.

Tactics are nice and all, but if you dont have a team that will follow it to a tee and not perform, then it's all for nothing. Everton were industrious and never stopped running. They were just tireless in that game. From the kick off to the last whistle. Arteta tried to offset it with changes, but you can't really offset the actual effort from the bench. Still, Everton had their best game of the season and they only managed to win it with a single goal from a corner. They were the worthy winners, but let's not pretend they did something out-worldly. They worked hard, got the basics right and got the spoils at the end. Arsenal didn't and they were rightfully punished for it. New manager bounce is also very real. United fans, remember the Aston VIlla game?
