I have been pulling off 100-yard pistol shots for 40 years. I was in the US Army and Murphy's Law told me that when I needed a rifle, I might not have one. Several times per year I take two or three handguns out to the 100-yard line and fire off ten or twelve shots from each handgun. My hit rate is above 90% on silhouette targets. When I started playing soldier the official effective range of the M1911A1 pistol was 50 meters. Modern police pistol training seldom exceeds 25 yards. Thank you for this video demonstrating what a pistol can do at 100 yards. I don't have the resources to fire at tissue simulants.

I have been doing it for almost as long and the way I figure it is if I can do it at 100/50/25 I can sure as heck do it at 7. Shot the 1911a1 in the Corps, messed with a 6 in bbled 357 that benched I would hit a 2 liter soda bottle more often than not at 100The 1911 was developed to hit a man sized target at 50 yards. The old Guns and Ammo board came up with a game that I though was pretty fun. get a steel, shoot what you got, start at 50, shoot until you get 2 hits, move to 40, shoot until 2 hits, 30-20-10. Timed from before you draw. I did real well with a 1911, Made it with a Kel Tec PF9 but was getting worried I would run out of ammo at 50. (2 mags) but I made it. Why would anyone think that 100 years later pistols became so much less effective that they were only useful at 7 yards?

Once, at an outdoor range, about ten years ago (as in my eyes were ten years younger) I managed to "dial in", after several shots) on a Shoot n See bullseye type target and put three or four rounds on paper at 100 yards with a Heritage Rough Rider shooting offhand, two-handed in something like a modified Weaver stance using Winchester Super X hollow point ammo. Took probably twenty shots to get those three or four on paper and I was using a long range rifle target - as in the overall target circle was probably 1.5 feet across. Could I have gotten hits with someone shooting back at me? Heck no. Were my few hits in a nice group? More like a pattern (as in shotgun). Do I think the .22WMR from a 6.5 inch barrelled revolver would get someone's attention at 100 yards if one did manage to get a hit? Well, all I can say is the target was mounted on a piece of press board and every one of the rounds - the ones on target and the ones that weren't - passed cleanly through the pressboard and kicked up.puffs of dirt from the berm that was roughly eight to ten yards behind it.

While “it’s not that hard a shot”. It’s still abnormal to see it. In my pistol 1 class I teach women of all ages mostly concealed handgun skills the basics but I still have them start cold at 60yards aim small miss small before we move inside ten yards for practical repeatable accuracy (don’t want to frustrate new shooters want them to keep practicing). And after two classes most the time all of them are hitting at 60 and I move their cold shooting out to 100-130yards they find it a fun way to start the class it also makes the standard self defense ranges much more doable. I have many friends that carry and I think I know three proficient enough to even hit at 100 much less repeatable hits at 100. Now ask them and they will all tell you it’s a piece of cake…. Great marksmanship here

Some years ago while living in western Colorado I took a new 1911A1 out into the desert to test it out, using 230 grain ball rounds I started shooting at a pile of rocks well past 250 yds after a few shots to walk them in I was able to hit that pile consistently and it was knocking them around pretty good. The pistol was inclined at about a 15 deg angle and I was placing the front sight on the rocks and estimating the windage by keeping the slide body in line with the target. At that angle the bullets were dropping in like mortar rounds, it was a lot of fun and I certainly gained a lot of respect for how far bullets can carry down range and still be lethal.

My complements on your distance shooting, especially with those plastic pistols! 👍 I've personally made hits on hogs and coyote out to 125m. However, I shoot 45 Colt, 45 Auto, and 357Mag. either in single action revolvers, double action revolvers, or a full-size 1911A1 autoloader. And I haven't used factory ammo in decades. I load my own. That helps. The largest hog I hit at a measured distance of 95m, was 225 pounds. This was with 255gr SWC 45 Colt from a 5 1/2" SAA. It ran (sort of) for 6', then went down. I have hogs and coyote that roam my woods of East Texas, and I regularly take them anywhere from 20m. to as far as 60m. due to the density of trees.

Long range handgun shooting was a very common activity in the 80's and 90's. IHMSA silhouette competition was a huge sport in those days. I regularly participated along with my late brother. When we first started we used the guns we had. Me a 4" .357 magnum and him a 6" .44 magnum. With practice hits on Rams at 200 meters became fairly easy. (150 meter turkeys were the hardest) it wasn't uncommon from certain positions in practice to shoot a 4 or so inch group on swinging practice rams at 200 meters with iron sights. As our equipment and skills improved we started shooting at even longer ranges. Sometimes out to 600 yards with both .445 supermags and freedom arms .454's with silhouette sights. More often than not we used 55 gallon varrels as targets but also had 2 24" steel plates and both could regularly hit those as well.

You might like to look up a reprint of Ed McGivern's "Fast and Fancy Revolver Shooting," or Elmer Keith's "Sixguns" or J. Henry FitzGerald's "Shooting." Revolver matches used to be out to 50 yards distance but police and military usually only train to 25 yards now. An account of a gunfight between a US Border Patrol officer armed with a .38 revolver and a smuggler armed with a Winchester rifle at a distance of 200 yards is in "No Second Place Winner" by Bill Jordan--the Border Patrolman won that one. Gunfighting is a minor part of police work but is a matter of life and death. Take a look at the official police pistol qualification course for your area and note that 25 yards is the farthest distance, that usually 7 yards is the closest target (can be 3 yards) and that distance happened because "hip firing" double action was a fad, but few officers could empty their revolver into an oversized silhouette target without a lot of practice at the 15-yard line. Police pistol qualification is Public Relations work primarily--hitting a man-sized target at 75 feet distance with bullets fired from a pistol can be difficult enough despite "extensive" training. Then there's the problems of indoor police ranges dating back to ancient times and limited to 50 feet or less, the land requirements for even 25-yard outdoor ranges constituting a heavy burden on defunded police budgets, and training priorities such as professional image projected to the public (no swearing and get those damned pronouns correct!) mean that police agencies going to a live-fire pistol qualification range twice annually are stressed to do that much shooting. Unlike most security officers, sworn law enforcement officers train on the clock and their agencies pay trainer fees, range rental, and probably also pay for practice ammunition. Have you priced 200 rounds of 9mm Luger jacketed hollow point duty ammunition recently? Armed security officers may have to pay for their own ammunition and still fire for score four times a year--depending on their company--their instructor probably will require bringing 200 pistol rounds and spend four hours on the shooting range, too. All this means that armed force professionals will be limited to what they can train for--and firing pistols for score at 50 yards basically went out of style in the post-WW2 period when police agencies went fully on-board with mandatory training. Prior to that, the pre-WW2 police agencies usually limited their training based on their resources--and seldom did police conduct revolver practice beyond 25 yards distance. Despite that, sometimes police were shot at from beyond 25 yards. Luckily, few felons were able to hit at the longer distances with their crime guns--but flying bullets are a public health hazard. Being able to put a fight-stopping bullet into someone actively flinging lead when that person is 50 yards away is why police are increasingly carrying patrol rifles in their patrol cruisers. It's easier to hit an 8-inch bullseye at 50 yards with a rifle bullet. And what of bicycle and foot patrol officers? Normalizing foot patrol carrying a long gun is going to be an uphill battle. The alternative is practice at longer distances. Better sights help--a red dot sight doesn't blot out the area around the target like metallic sights do. Pistol bullet trajectory isn't laser flat but isn't a mortar round or crossbow bolt either--a typical 9mm Luger service pistol bullet zeroed for 50 yards distance is about a half-inch high at 25 yards and perhaps half a foot low at 100 yards. Your mileage may vary but holding for the center of the chest from the muzzle to 75 yards will probably impact in the chest cavity and put the group center in the abdomen at 100 yards--that's close enough most of the time.

From South Africa: great, practical, hands on, verifiable video. What you see is what you get, in practical terms ! We live in one of the world's most dangerous countries, including war zones. In one of its most dangerous cities, and provinces. A handgun is what most of us carry, wherever we go. In the countryside, long(er) range shots may be required. Your video proved me that with good skills, we are no longer outgunned by distance! In all the years I have carried a gun, privately and in the Police Reserve, I never had this knowledge. This video is priceless for me and people like me, in our day to day environment. We have an ex National President and a leader of a political party, who chant in Parliament and in public and on TV: "Kill the whites, kill the farmers, one settler one bullet, kill their wives and their children, kill their cats and their dogs", and worse. A High Court Judge ruled, that this is not " inflammatory hate speech" but "ART"....! The number of dead and wounded victims of almost daily farm attacks speak for themselves. Your presentation is a "shot in the arm", levels the playing field against AK's, and gives hope! Bless you and thank you.

Hi Phillip " from sunny south Florida U.S.A. , I have been privileged to be able to shoot 100 yard targets with pistol many times, I was a U.S. Marine for over 20 years and a marksmanship instructor several years after. I would always use a standard piece of 8.5 inch x 11.5 inch piece of notebook paper. I found if I held my sights at the very top of the note book paper the bullets would land in the center of the paper or just a little lower. THE RULE for combat 100 yard pistol shooting is hold at the base of the neck and you will get a solid torso shot . If a head shot is all you have , aim 6 inches over the head at 100 yards and no more. Even a 1ounce shotgun slug only drops 4-5 inches at 100 yards, many people miss because they aim too high thinking there is a big bullet drop.

Knowing trajectory really helps. Good job! Yes I have done quite a bit 100 yard shooting. Don't guess that someone else shooting at you can't do damage. I shot with a .22 singlr action at a 14-inch bell at about 250yards for🎉 years. Drop made that a lot of fun. Some old guys after stating the handguns are no use past 10 or 15 yards. Bullets carry, and trajectory is Very important! What a fun video, it brought back lots of memories!

My favorite part about these tests using Ballistics Dummy Labs Torsos is how they put FBI Ballistics Gel Tests and their results completely to shame. Keep in mind that according to the FBI, there's only a marginal difference in ballistics performance between 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP. Unfortunately, the results are a bit more dramatic once you introduce a full simulated torso into the mix. I think it's time for the FBI to update their testing protocol.

I don't think I could consistently get hits with a handgun at 100 yards, it would be more of a luck shot. Honest Outlaw on the other hand seems to be able to consistently hit long range with pistols. Great video, I've always wanted to see these torso targets hit long range, I still want to see a 100 yard, and out to 500 yards with a rifle on one of these

It's really just a practice thing. If you're a good handgun shooter, it's just finding where to hold. After that, hitting at 100 yards isn't terribly difficult, although any deficiencies in your trigger pull will absolutely cause a miss at that range.

Annnnnnd, in the first two shots you completely disproved the entire premise of the video. Not only did you hit the target 100% of the time, but the bullets absolutely proved to provide devastatingly lethal and accurate from distance. Great shootin' Dude!

my 100 yard shooting with my 44mag revolver improved greatly when I changed my sight picture to a 6 o'clock hold or (porched as my dad called it) instead of a center hold or combat hold. Being able to see the target overtop of the sights helped a lot...

Great video!! I made a hit on a running hog at 110 yds(3rd shot) with a Glock 17. Hit the spine and nocked it down, but didn't kill it. Ran to it and finished it off, but it was the coolest pistol shot I've ever made. Doubt I could ever do it again even though I shoot at distance quite a bit. Also keep in mind that spear pistol bullets like 9mm fmj have a far better ballistic coefficient than a flat hollow point, therefore it will retain more energy down range. Hollow points have bad aerodynamics, but this is usually not a problem for typical pistol ranges.

I have a range on my farm, my sons and I have competitions , we start at 20 yards , after all 3 of us make the hit on an 18" ding we move back 10 yards, then again after we all make our hits. Those hits are easy .until about 80 yards. We learned quickly the black ding is virtually invisible at 125 yards , so we paint it white. I can make the shots at 125 but I've been shooting since I was 6 Y O. My oldest son makes about half at 125. He also has been shooting since he was 6. My youngest has issues past 75 yards but he doesn't go to the range nearly as often and refuses to wear his glasses. It's a lot of fun ! A military buddy claims it's a waist of time, he's brain washed into the if it's past 25 yard you use a rifle.. my theory is what if a bad guy's at 100 yards shooting at your family, but all I have is my 9mm or .40 cal? I need to be capable of shooting said bad guy/ gal from as far as I can . My military friend said in this senario he would run. I think my ideology is best, but pray to God we never find out. I know how good I am with an AR .556 at 200 yards, I'm not running! Hopefully, find cover, pray, or become ambidextrous so I can kiss my axx goodbye, lol. My range goes out to 450 yards. We do a similar drill with rifles starting at 50 yards , one shot to torso, one to head , move back 50, same thing back to 450 yards. The rifle shoots similar to that of a 3 gun competition. But hand guns mostly free hand. It's cool to see that at 100 yards it would indeed still be lethal. Impressive head shots sir.

Depending on service branch, your military friend may regard someone at 400 meters (about 440 yards) as out of rifle reach. US Army rifle qualification courses go out to 300 meters and considerable numbers of soldiers are limited to reduced-size silhouette target arrays at 25 meters--or even 15 meters. Pistols are not a big deal in America's military except as a badge of status. A Military Police badge is a symbolic shield. Imagine the reaction I'd get when I suggest using an MP badge to protect from swords and arrows.

This is awesome to know, maybe not so much in context of using a pistol at distance even though it's possible, but it definitely highlights the fact that if you're standing out in the open and hear gunshots or see some idiot/s with a handgun off in the distance you still need to find cover asap. Like just because it's happening way over there and it's "just a pistol" is no guarantee that you won't get hit. Also a big highlight for knowing what's beyond your target and understanding that you could cause problems WAYY downrange if you don't do your part in preventing accidents. 100yds in my area isn't just from the gas station register to the parking lot, it's from one gas station register to the gas station register across the damn street.

Also, good call on not doing the close range test. We've all seen that a million times. There's a saying in film making "Kill your children" which sounds awful, but it means remove as much of your content to make it as lean as possible. Most films start as 6 hour long cuts, and are cut down to about -2 hours.
