Connective tissue does a lot more than just keep you in one piece. In this episode, Patrick breaks down the varied role it plays in your body and how one tissue type can encompass so many different types of cells.

Our bodies have four tissue types: nervous, muscle, epithelial, and connective. And while all play an important role in our bodies, in this Human we will be focusing specifically on connective tissue.
While, connective tissue does make sure your body doesn’t, well, fall apart, connective tissue wears many hats in our bodies. Connective tissue is difficult to define because it encompasses lots of different cell types, from cartilage in your nose and ears to the liquid blood in your veins.
Our connective tissue can take form as blood and lymph or as ligaments.
But there are some commonalities across all connective tissue, and that’s what Patrick is going to break down in this episode of Human.

Connective Tissue Supports and Protects
opentextbc.ca/anatomyandphysi...
“Connective tissues perform many functions in the body, but most importantly, they support and connect other tissues; from the connective tissue sheath that surrounds muscle cells, to the tendons that attach muscles to bones, and to the skeleton that supports the positions of the body.”
Tissue Engineering to Improve the Most Common Orthopaedic Surgery
www.pennmedicine.org/news/new...
“Torn menisci are so common and so severe that the surgery required to repair the injury is the most common orthopedic procedure, and cases are on the rise. However, meniscus surgery may not be fully effective, since it involves removing only the torn part of a meniscus, leaving behind less of it to bear the same load of body weight as before. Researchers at Penn are working to uncover ways to encourage the cells in and around the meniscus to repair themselves, hopefully leading to less invasive procedures.”
What are ligaments?
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NB...
“Our bones, muscles and joints work together in a coordinated way to move our body and give it stability. Tendons and ligaments play an important role here, too: Tendons connect muscles to bones, allowing us to move, and ligaments help to hold things in place.”

I've got Ehlers-Danlos Syndrom, and his video helped me to better understand the way my body feels and the things doctors say to me.
@VariantAEC
@VariantAEC 4 жыл бұрын
I don't have EDS but have some other undefined problem especially effecting my spine knees and finger joints that is similar to RA (enough to be considered by different specialists in the same field to say I do and don't have RA). I'm starting to consider the possibility of Multiple connective tissue disorders, but being diagnosed isn't straight forward. My joints sound very crunchy and to me even fine motor movements of the neck sound like pieces of wood or plastic grinding into each other most of the noise is transmitted to my ears through sonic conduction. However this kind of unwanted feedback is also audible outside of my own body by others in a space with very little ambient noise. I sound like a poorly maintenanced machine. Unintended joint locking is also possible, but it's not documented in cases of convective tissue disorders that I have researched thus far. More rigid tissues seem to be perfectly fine while skin bleeds without warning and I have gastrointestinal problems every now and again which might fall more inline with rarer presentations of EDS. This had me looking for rare or newly discovered forms of EDS or conditions like EDS. So my skin literally slowly dissolves in water, my brain is spilling out of my skull, other tissue is verifiable disordered as well and my joints seem to be gunked up with something causing beyond chronic grinding, popping, discomfort and even pain. To make matters worse my blood chemistry is borderline acidic always showing signs of infection and low hydration regardless of what I'm doing or when I am tested for years now which may make me a breeding ground for certain types of bacteria, viruses and fungi. High seasonal body temperatures might keep these things at bay or they might help keep some foreign invaders living inside me alive during the cold months. One particular fungus Candida Albicans which is commonly found on certain locations outside of the body can wreak havoc on human tissue of it gets inside you causing many of my symptoms only in very very rare cases... That is right before it destroys vital organs causing sudden death. The problem with Candidiasis is that it doesn't typically take too long to kill a person. I've been like this for well over five years, but 5 years is basically the longest I've ever heard anyone survive with chronic systemic candidiasis. So it's back to the drawing board? I've read that EDS isn't just hypermobile joints, but literally every medical source lists it as a critical symptom a staple or hallmark of the disease. I don't know? I thought I had Crohn's disease years ago or a thyroid problem. My mother thinks I might have MS and the doctors are confused as all h•••. The only things the doctors have to go on that prove I might not be insane are the diagnostic images which unequivocally prove internal deformities do indeed exist. None of which they can explain and all of them don't typically effect people as young as myself when they were found. With special antibody tests showing false positives based on further testing, reflexology and other neurological examinations showing progressive limb spasticity with very few other deficits... It's a mess and if my connective tissue is disordered it might explain a lot from my swollen finger joints to the creaking of my neck and various lesions in organ tissue to cochlear migraines which cause temporary deafness. This video may have helped push me to reevaluate the complexity of load bearing joints like tge spine and knees which might help in some way to focus attention on one of the least debilitating and most annoying symptoms I have.

VariantAEC Im not a doctor so Im not sure exactly what you want me to say to all this. But if you don't have hypermobile joints, you do not have EDS for sure. Every type of EDS has hypermobile joints, and then additional symptoms. But without hypermobile joints, it must be another disorder.

I'm just working on the origins and evolution of cancer cells and it is fascinating how much research is currently focusing on the so-called tumour microenvironment. During the formation of a tumor, cancerous cells shape the extracellular matrix. For example, we find a high amount of (leaky) blood vessels which provide tumor cells with more oxygen and a higher density of "normal" cells which sometimes protect tumor cells from anti-cancer drugs (I'm planning a video about that soon). By studying the extracellular matrix around tumour cells, scientists hope to find new ways to treat cancer!
