I could justify it at the time because it was the middle of a coming battle so it's a terrible time to go into a big backstory or flashback. If Johnson hadn't screwed the pooch, he could have used it to introduce new characters and an interesting arc for ep VIII. But when it never was resolved it made the entire encounter utterly irrelevant and annoying.

Lando obviously got ahold of it, somehow. Who actually found it in the tunnels of Cloud City is still unclear, and did Lando give it to Maz directly or did he give it back to Luke first? Thor seems to be going with this latter scenario here.

I say it’s an alternate universe. I wish Star Wars did what superhero comics do and have several ongoing timelines. That way we could have new stories that tie in with the new movies and the old EU continuing at the same time. Just label them as Legends, it wouldn’t be confusing.

One thing I would change is that instead of Leia being just the General of the Resistance, she’s the Supreme Chancellor of the New Republic. From Rebel Princess, to war hero, to President of the Galaxy

Also, screw this Resistance nonsense. It's the New Republic's forces, plain and simple. If you *really have to* make their side the scrappy underdogs versus the First Order, give them a reason to be. Give the New Republic more conflicts and rivals. It's very hard to imagine that 30 years would be enough time to restore any semblance of order or fully deal with the vestiges of the Empire. Then there are the Hutts, who already controlled a huge part of the galaxy and would be very eager to expand and fill that power vacuum. Not to mention all the systems or clusters which want to go it on their own, or have their own aspirations of ascendency. Heck, it would be easy, just look at the years following the fall of the U.S.S.R.. Rival factions, massive disorder, economic depression, military weapons and tech ending up on the black market, huge surge in organized crime. How could the galaxy NOT end up like that? So they've brought down the evil Empire and have a New Republic which has gained some footing, making the victory mean something, but they're still having to fight to free and protect systems from the chaos that has followed. They're finding it very difficult to bring peace and unity to a fractured and traumatized galaxy, and that's the new fight. The smaller systems and factions which might join them will only do so if the New Republic can demonstrate its value , establish stability, and champion their interests. You have old feuds and tensions flaring, would-be warlords rising, and it's very much an every-system/people-for-itself situation. Yeah, this is rather like the Republic in the Clone Wars, but you have to have some clear path to a meaningful victory for them to achieve by the end of the trilogy. It's a battle for the galaxy's collective soul. Then a new and truly terrible rival emerges: The First Order, so named because they intend to establish precisely that, order and stability, by any means. Totalitarian, demagogic, and with the men and arms to enact their will. By the end of things, our heroes have manipulated the Hutts and the First Order to fight each other, destroy the First Order, diminish Hutt influence, and win the confidence of the systems required to create a strong core government. All of that can be backdrop for the spacebuckling fun and adventure, but it grounds those struggles to a believable scenario.

Ok so this part with Han and how he met Rey and Finn, feels like it could be played even more differently, so it's a bit of an idea I had, and think maybe even shared with you when I sent my idea for a character for your project, so it could be made that Han, going under some sort of nickname and maybe even disguise did go back to smuggling job, but as cover for him being a republics spy, and trying to gather info on !st Order, and as a smuggler, he could easily chill out in some not shady places and just gather info by keeping his eyes and ears open, and he was currently docked on Jaku waiting for next smuggling job, that would let him go to a planet where he could get a lot of info if he managed to stay for a while there, but when he sees BB8 he nows something went wrong and that he should do something about it

Wow! This is going great. I'm looking forward to your next video. I love how you emphasized the "why me" reaction from Rey, it helps to show the will of the Force and its mystery. This shows that the plot is actually "going somewhere" with Rey, and her reaction is much more believable. The way YOU tell the story makes Rey's emotions something we can actually empathize with; in other words, her emotions (and her entire character for that matter) aren't above us and beyond our understanding.

@Tom Ffrench Luke being on that planet doesn't ruin him for me, it might have been hinting that he was this great Jedi Master seeking solitude until the time was right, and had become wiser and more powerful than Anakin at this time, and that he would be needed for the fight to come. Snoke I agree on however, he just looked like he was thrown in at the last minute and that they'd figure out who he was by the time the second film came around. TFA was far from perfect, but it wasn't a bad base to build on.

I'd argue that any promise and potential went out the window when it forgot its place, as the second act of a three act story. As the 8th installment of a 9 piece series. This was NOT the time to go off and explore new themes. Finish the story that was entrusted to you properly. If you get your own stand alone movie, THEN go off and do your liberal art school project.

I'd think it would make sense for Han to visit some old smuggling friends/ acquaintances for info or help about the first order. He would still have all those contacts despite going legit. The meeting with the Rathtar pirates thing wouldn't but completely wasted if they had some info on Starkiller base: I.E. they had been hired to sneak ALOT of stuff under the republic's noses to this one planet the First Order is concentrating on. Of course, this is probably coming from the fact I'm rereading the Thrawn trilogy and they had that aspect in the first book

Your points at 7:00 really made me think about the wasted opportunity of flipping the OT around and making the first order the more “rag tag” group. Would have been a really interesting dynamic instead of empire 1.5. I always felt like the people writing the small lore snippets intended the first order to be a “bang for your buck” faction, like how their armor is as high a quality as the clones or better because they don’t have the raw numbers like the Empire did. Sadly of course this was never recognized on screen

This definitely adds a lot more intrigue to Luke's situation. If you're going to apply the screenwriting structure of having a character who everyone spends the entire film talking about, you normally do everything you can to build anticipation for their eventual arrival, but they probably felt that they could skimp on this because the audience already knew who Luke was and couldn't wait to see him due to the real life time delay between the films, which is a little bit cheap and only works for fans watching along with the release schedule.

The issue is by making Anakin's lightsaber actually "Rey's Lightsaber" it would tell old fans that Disney is in control, and anything from Lucas' era was now actually theirs to do with as they wish. They wrest control and impose their way and think it's perfectly acceptable because they paid for it.

That was only for the merchandising, which is understandable. Rey was the one who used it in the movies at the time so it made sense to call it her’s. Anakin hadn’t used it since The Clone Wars ended and the new season wasn’t out yet. Before it was Anakin’s lightsaber, it was Luke’s. It doesn’t change the fact that, in canon, it is Anakin’s before anyone else’s.

I'm glad you kept in Finn getting to wield the saber as well, as that calls into question whether or not it was actually Rey that Luke saw using it. This would add to the idea of Finn and Rey representing the two sides of the Force, and allow for further tinkering with the plot further on, so that it could be either of them that was chosen by the force to save the galaxy, or it could be both. The idea of Luke having a vision of someone wielding his father's saber doesn't have to mean he saw exactly what they looked like. He could have simply seen a cloaked figure, a shadow, a hand, with or without a glove, or any number of other possibilities that show him someone else wielding it, and not himself. It could even turn out to be Ben Solo, having returned to the light thanks to Finn and Rey, one of whom could have overpowered him and taken his place as a Sith, banishing him, forcing him to come to terms with his own obsession with the Sith and the crimes he committed because of it, and leading him eventually back to either Luke, Han, Leia, or the other of the two, the one who chose the Light and became Luke's apprentice. Just some food for thought. Stay Awesome.

Simultaneously, your fixes make me sad as I realize that the Canon logistically cannot take on board your excellent adjustments. So. I request as your next series a description of new canon films you might offer that could heal some of the problems within VII-XI without directly changing those films (similar to how Rogue One improves A New Hope). It's okay if it's a bit messy and needs refining. For the most part, it's great and I love your changes. Some seem obvious and things that I always thought should have happened, others are new ideas to me and I like where it's going. I like the idea of not just rewriting and starting from scratch with what you think a sequel trilogy would have been, but instead being like script doctor and fixing what's already there. So far, excellent job. You've been fixing all of the biggest problems. Except for one... and I am currently assuming until I see the rest of what you have planned, that you are actually fixing it because you didn't mention it. You said that after Rey finds the saber and has the new (and so much better) conversation with Maz that things happen as-is from there and the FO attack. As-is would include SKB destroying the Hosnian system and the people at Maz's castle witnessing it. That's the part of the movie that bugs the hell out of me the most out of a very long list. You didn't specifically mention it, so I hope you purposely didn't and will explain the fix in a future video.

Hey Thor, I really like your changes to the Force Awakens... I have a couple of further suggestions to add to the first part... I think that as well as what you mentioned of Lor San Tekka there was a need for him to be connected to Ray being there in Jakku as well. In my head cannon, Ray would know Lor San Tekka as "the story teller" and we would have heard his voice at the begining of the movie retelling the story of the jedi to a group of kids while using little puppets (the one Ray had in her shelf as well as the ones we saw in the Last Jedi) and it would end like Obi wan Kenobi telling Luke... "Until the dark times, until the Empire!". I would have cut to Ray as we saw her but upon returning to sell her junk. She where she would have gotten a message from the "old lady" (the one we saw working with) saying in whispers that "the story teller" was back and wanted her to see him asap... In my head cannon that would have created lots of new story points to follow. Ray would have come to Lor San Tekka just as he was finishing his telling his story to the children and she would had remembered how she had learnt about the jedi the same way... though by now she would just thought they were just children's stories. Lor San Tekka would say that it was not longer safe for the children to be in the village (he knew why but would not tell her) and would ask her to take them to "the safe house". Also he would had given her the last "equipment piece" to fix the "safe house" and so she could finally get away from Jakku. The safe house would turned out to be the Milennial Falcon (it would be implied that she had been fixing/finding parts for it for a long time) and this this way we would see that she was not just abandoned in Jakku but that it was all part of a plan (just like Luke living in Tattooing was also part of the plan)...

A suggestion for the opening battle of TLJ: 0) No tone-shattering "Yo Mamma" joke. 1) Have there be far fewer Starfortresses, but make them require far more fire to destroy. This makes the battle easier to follow, allows the audience more time to connect to their crews emotionally as they struggle but increasingly face their inability to reach their target, and makes the ships themselves less nonsensical. 2) Put several boosters like the one Finn used on the back of each Starfortress, and make it visually apparent that this is their intended usage. This provides a source for that booster (and thus adds cohesiveness), plays up the ragtag-use-what-we've-got-however-we-can nature of the Resistance, and explains how Starfortresses are supposed to escape the detonation of their own payloads. 3) When only two Starfortresses remain, one that's almost dead uses its boosters to surge into the heart of the TIE formation before its payload goes critical, creating a hole the last bomber uses to barely make the drop as in the movie.

Pretty brilliant to change the map to a holo message. Personally, I would change Finn into an elite stormtrooper, Poe into Bail Solo, Kylo Ren into Jacen, a Jedi extremist, and Rey into Anakin's child through a Padme clone. Luke would be in exile to unravel an anti-chosen one prophecy. I'll brink back the Legends names and characters, with Jaina as a New Republic Admiral, Ben Skywalker as the defacto Grand Master, and Bail Solo as the commander of Rogue Squadron.

Considering that Luke served in the Rebellion for 3 years before Empire Strikes Back and that Lor San Tekka knows Leia since the old days when she was a princess it pretty clearly paints him as being the mentor who taught Luke how to properly fight which is why Luke vastly improved in his physical abilities between A New Hope and Empire Strike Back, becoming able to accurate land blaster shots, be prepared for most situations, and more detailed survival skills such as what to do in the event he crashed and so on and so forth. After all, if he was a former Jedi Leia would not have needed to go looking for Obi-wan. She would have already had a Jedi on hand.

A change I would make is cryptic comments from Han to BB-8 that looking back we know refer to him being Kylo's father before finally getting the message. After he gets it he leaves the scene giving some time to Rey and Finn before he comes back out saying he can't decypher it but thinks he knows someone who can. That's what leads to Maz where it still plays out pretty similar to how you described it. So far though, you've got me hooked on these changes. I still wouldn't mind Disney allowing someone to redo the movies with both re-editing and getting people back to do some new scenes. That hard part of course would be Leia. Smaller roles, like Lor San Tekka can be replaced but the main team characters would all have to stay.

I would have revealed the map was a red herring to discover how badly Snoke had infiltrated the New Republic. This would hint that the New Republic tagged all their ships using imperial tech to prevent a Rebel alliance being formed against them! And Snoke using that tech can track all of the New Republic ships. However Han returned to smuggling to help supply Leia's Resistance group with untagged ships thus explaining why the New Republic doesn't trust them.

The map was an eleventh-hour creation by Abrams/Kasdan. The original McGuffin was the lightsaber itself. They had no plan for the map. It was just another thing thrown at the wall to see what would stick. When fans see story potential in TFA, it's all accidental.

I like maz having more to do too... There is one simple change I think would make the movies so much better. Kilo says "I will finish what you started" which we find out was destroying the sith, because he fights the emperor then revives ray with the little energy he has left and say "with me the last skywalker dies, the last of the sith". Ray cries. Then the scene with ray taking the skywalker name has more meaning too

I never felt that Maz having Anakin/Luke's lightsaber needed any major backstory or explanation. I think people's desire to know the details is the result of JJ Abrams' damn mystery box storytelling. "A good story for another time" was a shortcut way of telling the audience: We thought having Anakin/Luke's Ep 5 lightsaber would be cool. Don't worry about how. Just enjoy it and move on. I always imagined that some random janitor or citizen of Cloud City found the weapon. He eventually sold it to somebody, who sold it to somebody, who sold it to somebody, until it was eventually sold to Maz. Probably to pay a huge bar tab. Easy. Peasy. Lemon Squeezy.

Wouldn't it be better if a flashback was shown of ESB. Just before Vader goes to his shuttle, he has ordered Imperial Special Forces to search the lower levels. Imperial Commando Mara Jade and her team discover the lightsaber and no trace of Skywalker. Vader is informed, but senses "He's alive." The lightsaber is later shown to be found by Luke amongst what he inherits from his father, passed on from an Imperial who wants to reunite the galaxy under an heir to the Empire. They had ZERO PLAN. Just the promise of jam tomorrow. And the most unimaginative, lacklustre and pointless plot imaginable that didn't continue the story from ROTJ as George Lucas had intended. Oh what could have been!

What "doesn't make sense" is Darth Vader sensing Obi-Wan on a giant space station and Luke across the expanse of space between star destroyers and rebel ships BUT he never senses anything special about Leia -- his own flesh and blood -- despite spending much more direct contact with Leia than Luke, including torturing the Princess twice!! However, it makes complete sense that a mechanic, custodian, or some other person in Cloud City could stumble up the lightsaber. It is logical that the shafts and corridors in Cloud City are routinely auto-cleared of debris, and folks shift through the junk for valuables and salvage parts. Remember, Chewbacca found C-3PO while casually exploring a junkyard on Cloud City.

@@emberfist8347 Dude! A forest has TREES! Lots and lots of TREES! Trees with random BRANCHES extending everywhere. That's why speeder bikes don't make sense. Cool chase scene. But no logical sense. And I am not suggesting that someone found the lightsaber inside a corridor. I am saying that something keeps those corridors clean and clear. The garbage, debris, animals, droppings, and stuff gets routinely flushed (for lack of a better word) and collect in a junkyard for final sorting. Totally logical. Finally, it doesn't matter what "potential" Leia was aware of. She is Vader's offspring. Vader argues, holds, threatened, mind probed, and tortured her twice. She spent way more time with Vader than Luke did. Plus they were familiar with each othe before Episode 4 began. If Vader felt a "tremor" in the Force when Obi-Wan boarded the Death Star, then he should feel a 9.5 earthquake whenever he is around his own child, no matter what her potential is. Leia being Vader's daughter is a cool reveal, but makes no logical sense. 😄

I am typing about what happens onscreen within three movies that were released from 1977 to 1983. I'm not typing about the Prequels. I'm not typing about the Expanded Universe. I'm not typing about deleted scenes, special editions, novels, comic books, video games, or official guide references. I'm not even typing about the Holliday Special. I am typing about the original trilogy as is! You keep mentioning The Force, The Force, The Force... I'm typing that Force or No Force, Leia is still Vader's offspring, and he spent way more time with Leia than with Luke. Based on the inactions Vader had between Obi-Wan, Luke, and Leia, it is narratively inconsistent that Vader does not feel a connection to Leia, not even on a purely biological level. Vader can sense his old master hundreds of meters away on a space station, but he can't sense his own daughter while standing next to her? Come on! Imagine trying to get away with that kind of inconsistency today. Imagine getting to the last Harry Potter film, and his parents are still alive. Even though we'd seen the dead spiritual forms of the parents. Even thought Harry became The Boy Who Lived because the self-sacrifices of his parents protected baby Harry from Lord Voldermort. JK Rolling tries to used a last-minute magic techno-babble to justify that Harry's parents suddenly reveal themselves in the second act of the last movie, and Rolling expects the audience to just accept it. Hell NO! That kind of twist would have been ripped to shreds. Just look at how many folks reject the final season of Game of Thrones. Modern audiences don't accept whatever comes onscreen anymore. Nowdays, if an author wants some kind of "It was me all along" reveal to blossom, then the writer better make sure the proper seeds were planted long beforehand. I love the Original Star Wars Trilogy. In fact, Return of the Jedi is still my favorite Star Wars film. However, there are things that series was able to do back then that cannot be done today. Leia being Vader's surprise daughter is one of those things. Search your feelings. You know this to be true.

I would differ on why they go to bar. ( sorry for none specific SW lingo ) Simply Falcon would still sustain damage and our hero’s would discuss at some point where they could go for safety, repairs, and information to help with new said holo message from Luke. I LOVE THIS! Videos where someone "fixes" a story are catnip for me, and the sequel trilogy needs fixing so badly it makes your videos feel even better. It's kind of like watching someone restore a tool or piece of furniture, except this time it's a story. Your decisions make the movie flow much better. I particularly like what you've done with Maz Kanata. In the real story that scene slowed everything down and gave me a chance to start questioning the plot, but in your version the trip to her castle is part of the plot and there's suspense about Luke's intentions. And Luke actually _has_ intentions here, which makes the whole thing more interesting.

I wish: - Maz Kanata was just 200 years old or so, as I thought making her older than Yoda kinda diminished his character. - Takodana and Maz’s castle/bar were underwhelming... it was like she had the only place on the planet. it would’ve been cool if it was like a cleaner and friendlier version of Mos Eisley, to contrast Rey’s only experience on Jacky... and maybe we see Hammerhead or a one-armed Ponda Bobba in the background? - maybe Maz could have some Force wisdom, but I didn’t like the idea that she was Rey’s de facto Jedi mentor in _TFA,_ rather than someone like Leia. - the Skywalker lightsaber was indeed found at Maz’s castle, but it was simply one of many objects and antiquities in Maz’s collection. the lightsaber can call to Rey just the same and give her a Force vision (but I wish we had actually seen the Luke v. Vader duel on Cloud City briefly, and even something from prequel-era Anakin, in Rey’s vision). - Maz can shake Rey out of her vision, and say something like “ oh, you’ve found my lightsaber! those were once the weapons of the Jedi. it’s quite a rare find, you wouldn’t believe what I paid for it!” Maz simply thinks it’s a neato specimen for her collection... - Rey replies something like “I know... it belonged to Luke, and Anakin before him.” - Maz says something like “oh shit, that makes it so much more valuable! what a steal!” (or maybe that’s silly) but then the movie can continue from there...
