The Collyer Brothers were a mystery in New York City: rich shut-ins in their own luxurious home, from a prestigious family that ended up in ruin and a curious case of hoarding. Let’s get into it.

It seems to me that the hording was not the key problem. It's the most obvious problem, but each major escalation in the story seems to be triggered by people invading and/or attacking the home, leading to an increased paranoia and further isolation from the outside.

It's like a bad chain reaction. Parents separate - Mom teaches them to be recluses - Parent dies - Quitting job & working from home - Pride in wanting to play doctor - reliance on antiquated medical books at a time medical science was advancing - Stress from the Great Depression - Disgust at the rapid societal changes between the Edwardian period & the Jazz era - Living off the grid & shirking bills for long periods of time - Lack of communication with the outside world leading to rumors - & this is where the break-ins & rocks through windows finally come in to play.

It's not because they had some sanity disease. It's because people kept trying to rob and attack them, in their home, they had no safe place to even eat and sleep, terrified to go out and be assaulted, while even journals lied about them and made them targets. They didn't do it to themselves. People in society did it to them. Forced them to made traps out of garbage to prevent assault and lived in constant terror until their body fell apart, and they died too scared to call for help. Shame on you society, you're still doing it.

I think the fact that after their father died Homer and Langley took all his possessions and stuffed them into the house speaks volumes. Even taking apart the Model T. They didn't sell or donate items they didn't need, including 15,000 medical books. Maybe they missed their father so much that they could not let go. And it snowballed as the years went by and they accumulated more items. Langley never gave up hope that Homer would get his vision back. So he kept buying newspapers. Ty for the context at the end. Hoarding is extremely stigmatized but often is a symptom of other mental health issues. Also hugs for any one who needs or wants them, whether you have mental health conditions or just need a hug

Apart from the extreme hoarding brothers story, I think this episode is really sweet... I love the thought that Chill and Grill would just wait Brew out whenever he's doing a dark episode 😂 and the way Chill scoots away to make room for Grill when he enters the room is such a cute detail!

Man... Those brothers seemed to be being attacked from the inside and out. The hoarding was for sure an issue, and I reckon grief and paranoia as well, but with how the outside treated them, I'm not surprised at all how they acted. A sad story all around.

so no one talks about the brotherhood, he took care of his brother for so many years. Their situation created by the greed of the same humans that lived in the area.

This is kind of like what my grandfather went through. He was an Army mechanic, Master Mechanic of Toyota cars, and a hobbyist munitions loader before he died. My grandmother helped recycle objects in their backyard before she died. When that happened, he basically lost his mind, and began collecting junk to turn into munitions or to sell off the scrap. The backyard basically became a scrapyard: both the old garage and the house were packed. Thankfully not to the extent these two brothers put themselves into, but enough to know that animal dander and sawdust was present and pathways were being made in the basement, some areas completely closed off. But to wrap this up: the Age of Convenience is frightening. It can change people, and it makes me want to get rid of stuff that more easily.

Not sure if anyone said, but the word you actually mean at around 10:33 is "emaciated", not "emancipated". Emaciated means skeleton-thin, and emancipated basically means liberated or freed.

God… I’ve lived in NYC for the last 6 years, including on Roosevelt Island, briefly. Even went to school in Harlem and was accepted into City College. Yet… I had never heard about these brothers. What a heartbreaking story. Happy to be able to say I struggled with my mental health in NYC, and recovered in NYC due to the high quality mental healthcare that’s available here now.

Literally they would’ve been semi-okay if only people weren’t so fricken nosy and left them alone and didn’t try to break in and get all up in their business further feeding the younger brother’s paranoia. Truly a whole set of unfortunate events lead them to such a sad demise.
