There is a not-so-obvious reason that hinders dabbawalas business. It is the attitude towards eating food prepared outside. People of earlier generations adhered strictly to eating only home made food. Eating food prepared outside was a strict no-no. Cost considerations were very important to the families. Now there is no taboo associated with eating food prepared outside. With smaller families, emphasis on saving money is not as rigorous as it used to be. This change in attitude seems to be a permanent change too. It is good to know that dabbawalas are looking at diversifying their services and adapting to changing times.

I don't think so it's permanent. With modern lifestyle and increasing health issues eating outside has become a health hazard. People are motivated to stay healthy or at least eat home cooked food. Dabbawalas will bounce back with little adaptations.

But now, I dont think people are finding tangible differences on smaller amounts.. example.. 50/- or 100/- may not make a big diff to one.. (even though its double the amount, but its just 50/- diff).. Earlier, when one's salary was less 10,000/- it would matter on monthly basis.. but now on different brackets.. it's not making any tangible difference..

Honesty and punctuality of the DabbaWalas are a source of inspiration to many. Yes, they were dependent on a single source of Income, but they were cost efficient and probably better than most doing similar services. With their business model at least, it encouraged "home-made" food consumption rather than from those cheap locations which makes "fast-food" but a shorter-shelf life for the person consuming that food.

Food delivery businesses like Zomato and Swiggy charge a certain commission usually ranging between 24%-28% of the order value from the restaurants that are receiving the orders. This is just the commission for generating business for the restaurant partner, and excludes charges for enabling deliver. For example - There is a restaurant approx 2.5 KM from my house the food which I get in restaurant is usually ranges Rs. 220 (including tax) but in zomato it ranges Rs. 300 (Including delivery)

Nowadays with GST, packing charges, resturant charges and also distance charge is also added. It's if your food costs 220/- in restaurant then the restaurant again increases the price to overcome commission that they have to pay so the food item becomes 250-260/- then add all the taxes and charges will come down to 350/-. Also when you lucky they also give 100-120/- discount which just reduces those extra charges and stuff.

It is truly a misfortune for Dabbawallas due to pandemic mandates else they would have thrived comfortably. It is not a failure. Now as they are coming back to regroup themselves after pandemic is great to look at their reselience. I strongly wish these Dabbawallas find in addition their regular routine add some value addition as they are explore gives them better revenue in the competitive delivery business. Sir v good presentation and good command in English, even a basic school of language can understand it. I'm not in Mumbai to review dabba wala but over a period of years they had excellent service, we can effectively learn cheap mode of transport and logistics, to this cost any courier/logistic company can't compete. Besides thr dedication and commitment towards delivery is the prime regardless of any obstacle they face. They're the model for the corporate companies sitting in Ac room and billing customers in thousands. Even though thr are different platforms like swiggy, zomato etc, they're uncomparable with dabbawala

I am from Hyderabad. I used to procure services of Dabbawalas, when they started here way back in 2005 or 2006, unfortunately, they could not match the services available in Mumbai. Here in Hyderabad, they have even agreed to get us lunch from the designated mess, but it was a big failure as they hardly maintained time.

I have some suggestions not sure if it help 1.They have to develop there own app like zomato or swiggy. 2.They have to change business style due to hybrid mode of people work to deliver services not only offices where ever and when ever they required with in their operated frequency even we have less frequency. 3.If possible they have to open physical short hotels in rush areas. 4.Accept sodexo and all other payments. I know its may be bit difficult to expand business once in all opearated areas but slowly its required to aquire the current trend.After covid if you observe hotel businesses are increased a lot compared to before covid they can use this opportunity. Note:I am not from Mumbai but a I stayed bit time with just my bit observation suggesting my ideas might be helpful.

Eating food prepared the previous day is very common now. Many families have both husband and wife work. Outside food is preferred by new generation. Using cars to commute and carry tiffin becoming more common. Experienced dabbawalas quit permanently during Covid.

Sir, I personally feel that one another main reason for failure of this unique business style is that because of current scenario, new generation is not social like it was used to be previous generation, now a days no one knows the name of next building/ street / surrounding areas. Most food delivery apps are running at loss on VC money. VCs have unlimited money because US govt has been printing trillions of dollars and giving it out at 0% interest for last 20 years. So VCs can afford to fund 10 loss making busineses for one which takes off. So how low can Dabbawala operating costs and fees be when delivery apps are willing to work at loss? Dabbawalas have to make profit as they have no VC backing

For me the answer is simple :- As youngster are getting better job and pay due to IT boost they can afford better quality food of various varieties delivered by swiggy/zomato/UberEats from better hygienic kitchen(amid covid lockdown and quarantine young people are worried about their health and sanitation these cheap kitchens from where dabbawala get the food). With increase in Tik Tok/Instagram Culture youngsters are influenced by their near perfect body image so they are into a healthier diet and Daily exercise routine. Cheap food is the main reason that paved the success of dabbawala and that's is same reason Dabbawala business is dwindling into oblivion.

The Dabbawala food is much much healthier than Zomato will ever be able to serve. They serve homemade food unlike unhealthy junk food served at any hotel.
