Cap rewards Sam (the good son) with the shield while punishing Bucky (the rebellious son) by making him watch the other become what he wanted to be. This imagery is heightened by the fact that Cap is old. Obviously, that's not what's happening, but that's what it seems like to me. In the end it makes no difference to me who gets the shield as they have both had it in the comics

Sam fought side by side with Cap a lot on various types of missions. Sam even found Bucky. Then they were on the run together. Bucky was capable but damaged. He wasn't emotionally healthy until IW, and even then he hung back when Cap and BP ran forward and Sam flew ahead. Sam was a no-brainer. Bucky knew it, that's why he supported that decision.

@@throwmeaname he really was a cap during a rough period in marvel. And during his run, he was slammed with the whole "NotMyCap" or "GiveBackTheShield" by the public or media. And yet he still wanted to follow his own path as cap. Not being the captain america steve was, but to be the captain america sam is. Hence why he opened a hot line specifically for the common folk to call him in if theres ever any danger. Like how he helped this one grandmother whose grandson was kidnapped and the police could do nothing about it. Long story short, that kid was saved and dubbed the new falcon(cause the kidnapper experimented on him with a falcon). And despite the media slamming sam for having a possible illegal immagrant as his new side kick, that never bothered sam as he only cared for what was in the kids heart and not on a paper.

Even Bucky was a questionable choice for his run as Captain America. Now don't get me wrong, if we are approaching it simply from the view of him being a symbol and the shield being part of that symbol then yes Sam is a great choice. Especially being as he's a military veteran.

I think people are forgetting one thing, Bucky wasn't chosen to take up the mantle in comics as Cap. Bucky made that choice of becoming Cap when steve was gone ("killed") and was willing to give back the shield when Steve came back. Steve chose Sam to replace him when he couldn't be Cap anymore. Now if endgame end with Steve also being killed in battle, if we are following the Marvel comics lore, yes it would make more sense that Bucky becames the new Captain America.

The MCU and its TV series did it better, tbh. But the costume looks better in comics. Again, tbh. On the side note, I like the fact that in the comics, Steve served as a mission operator after his resign. This could be adapted to the MCU as well. Maybe after he put the infinity stones back, in the timeline he stayed with Peggy, he decided to create the SHIELD that was not influenced by Hydra, in preparation to fight against the upcoming threats. With his knowledge about the future, he wanted to make the timeline he was in to be a much better timeline than his original one. In that timeliene, even tho he didn't become Captain America, he served as one of the founders or directors of SHIELD, and initiated the Avengers program. Maybe he also freed Bucky in that timeline, and made him the Captain America instead? So, we have both Sam Captain America in the original timeline, and Bucky Captain America in Steve's timeline. Cool, right?
