None of the companions in the game is 100% necessary to recruit. You make your decisions and then you find a way to make them work. My entire D&D group told me that you have to recruit Shadowheart, so just to prove them wrong, I had a play through where I ignored her on the Nautialoid and then finished her off on the beach. My husband was playing with me to be a witness, and we finished the game in our standard time. It didn’t even slow us down.

It can actually make your run faster to slay Shadowheart. She's so key to a chunk of Act 2, but if you don't have her in party you can get just the Orb from the Orthon (or do one challenge) and go to the bottom floor of the Shar Temple. Use Knock on the main door. You can then skip the majority of the Temple. But when she's there it add so much content that isn't really needed to improve the overall story, only her story, which everyone should do at least once, but as far as speed, it is faster to skip it and not have to worry about the forced losing her scene.
