One mon I think would be really interesting to do next is Clefable. Clefable is one of only two evolution lines that are in the fast level up group, so unlike Starmie you'll be able to level up fast in the early game, decent special at 85, amazing movepool, and it's also going to be a *very* unique Brock fight, since your best way of damaging Brock would be to use Metronome.
@benwarped72722 жыл бұрын
i did a clefable run, and got surf against geodude and mega drain against onix XD thunder on starmie. the metronome gods were smiling upon me. may they smile upon JROSE as well
@LanceOmikron2 жыл бұрын
Unique perhaps, but... not a very encouraging prospect. If the best way to do damage is via metronome, then it essentially means that the Brock fight will be a complete lottery. Clefable is going to be horrifically inconsistent (and/or just slow, since its only other option is Doubleslap) in the early game. Much like Starmie, most of its good movepool is locked behind TMs that are not available in the early game, though unlike Starmie it has the advantage of STAB Mega Punch and Body Slam to look forward to (Atk is 70, so those moves will at least be usable). It's also worth noting that 85 Special is noticeably lower than Starmie's 100, and Clefable's speed is 60, nearly half that of Starmie's. We'll just have to see how much the fast level rate and Mega Punch/Body Slam make up for these deficiencies, but I doubt Clefable will break into the top 10.
@SomeGuy712x2 жыл бұрын
Actually, there are three evolution lines in Gen. 1 in the fast level up group: Clefairy/Clefable, Jigglypuff/Wigglytuff, and Chansey. (Unless you don't count Chansey as an evolution line.)

hey Jrose. love the vids. I've noticed that you keep saying that your pokemon don't deal more damage despite you leveling them up quite often. If you weren't aware, damage rounding is an accidental mechanic that means that only levels that end with a 0, 3, 5 or 8 will increase your damage, both physical and special. as an example, Starmie in this video at level 17 wouldnt actually deal more damage than level 15, but would at level 18.
@DoctorFalchion2 жыл бұрын
How does that work? Do attacking stats only go up at those levels or something?
@Sniwott2 жыл бұрын
Well technically the way the damage rounding works is that you barely do more damage per level unless your level ends in 0, 3, 5, or 8. So technically he is doing more damage but it's not really noticeable compared to if Starmie was level 18. At the very least the slight bulk increase helps... kind of
@imlrg91642 жыл бұрын
No, your attacking stats go up as shown. If you didn't know, what level you are also factors into your damage calculations in RBY. Due to the way the game rounds numbers, that means that levels ending in 0, 3, 5, and 8 gets you a much more substantial boost to damage then if you were at another level. Pretty screwy stuff!
@bryanduncan94742 жыл бұрын
I think he mentions doing less damage after level ups *in battle* because he loses badge boosts after leveling up in battle

@Bryan Duncan I'm talking about the times he comes back to a fight at a slightly higher level and says that he didn't notice an increase in damage, not about losing the badge boost glitch via level up. Regardless it doesn't really impact much and the videos are still enjoyable to watch, just wanted to inform him that damage rounding thresholds exist in case he reads it.

I believe the Pokemon anime actually makes a great point about stone evos in the episode “Electric Shock Showdown”. Surge evolved his Raichu early, which ultimately does him in during the rematch because Pikachu, despite being weaker, has a more diverse level-up movepool early on.
@SkyNinja759 Жыл бұрын
That was suppose to be the original tradeoff of stone evolutions. Gamefreak wanted to introduce a at will power spike but with the drawback of potientially falling off due to move restrictions. So you either get a temporary boost or a gym you're struggling with but reduced late-game power or you wait with a terrible 1st stage until you get to the elite 4

Considering how much the slow growth rate slowed some Pokemon, I wonder how Clefable would do who doesn't have exciting stats but does have the fast growth rate. Unlike Chansey, you have a Brock answer right from the beginning with Metronome which has a pretty good chance for hitting any of the gazillion of weaknesses of Rock/Ground Pokemon. Just too bad you don't allow evasion moves at all even when the Pokemon learns it naturally, but even without Minimize it would be interesting I think. This is a challenge video where you try to complete the game with only ONE Pokemon - which is not how you're *actually* supposed to play through the *actual* game from start to finish either to begin with (as evidenced by needing HM slaves in his party, the clearly the game wants you to actually have more than one Pokemon anyway). Otherwise Starmie is generally a staple in most playthroughs whenever it becomes available to the player, and once it is available, it usually just carries you from that point. With their best movesets, most of the "Not Mewtwo" tier would be, at the very least, rivaling Mewtwo's time (specially when JRose later made an under two hours run with Mewtwo) and the top five would probably be under 3 hours (and maybe a few of the lower mons would give us a nice surprise). In fact, I can see mons like Charizard going up a tier, so to speak, and rivaling the times of its siblings Venusaur and Blastoise. And Mew would be fighting with Mewtwo for "best time ever". Probably WON'T beat her child, but it would be a close competitor. Same with Alakazam. The main problem Mew had was Brock, because it didn't have any attack that wasn't resisted.

I think he could play better but his unconcious bias did not let him do that

He also rates the runs on how difficult they were. Starmie struggled in the Cerulean area and Hypno had the easiest run ever. There's no comparison.

@@DisplayThisOkay True, but the bias against Starmie cant be denied. Jrose turned into a pure hater, that was pretty shameful.

A lot of people fixate on what moves the pokemon can learn, without considering how it will fare in the early game. This was pretty obvious.
@RussellKlischer Жыл бұрын
I will not stand for the anti-starmie propaganda. You’re making it out like it struggled through the early game miserably, when you beat everything with fairly minimal issue. Your ranking is highly flawed. Starmie is one of the best Pokémon in gen 1 due to its incredibly high speed, psychic typing, good special, good move pool. End of story.

I've been playing Gen 1 from it's release and I only just now realised that the sprite for your character upon entering a battle is standing up. I always thought he was sitting down but I now see that what I thought was his leg is actually his arm, ready for battle. It makes so much sense but I'll probably never unsee my 25 years of imagining that the player is sitting down.

Yay, thanks for doin Starmie Jrose!. I'm not disappointed, maybe a little surprised, but still really enjoyed seeing my old favorite special attacker shit stomp some late game competition.

Starmie was about as amazing in the Elite Four as I imagined. I didn't see the early game struggles coming, though. That was quite the surprise

Some of the design choices made in this game are so perplexing. Like no attacking bug moves and Starmie being slow growth

That part at the end where Starmie goes wild on crits is like it could hear the chants and cheers of its legions of fans from the JRose comment section…😢
@SWISS-13372 жыл бұрын
Looking at the comments, a lot of people really thought starmie would be the best, but honestly no shot. If Jrose were to redo mewtwo and alkazam now, I can guarantee he'd be able to shave off a considerable amount of time, because those Pokémon were just outright better. Fun run to watch, and not a bad placement , but nothing too surprising with that result.

Also before someone replies "but he did redo mewtwo, and got under 2 hours!" I meant redo at 4 times speed.

Jrose, you mention that hypothetically if Starmie had psychic to begin with that it may have kept up with Mewtwo. It would be cool to have a category to test theories like this one!

Kingler will be a fun watch. The one problem I see is that it only learns Normal attacks for physical, so Agatha will be a problem with her high Special Ghosts.

Starmie is on my team in every single Pokemon game I can have it. That water/psychic typing is chefs kiss, but also the high speed and great special atk. In my current playthrough, I set Starmie up with Reflect/Light Screen and two attacks. Maybe even a status move. Love Starmie so much.
