Small note : in New super mario bros wii, if you grab the secret exit in 1-3, you access a cannon that leads to 5-1. And this level features a part with water. That's one level less than going to 1-4.

In SMB Wonder, the 1st level actually has a pool in an underground section.

Yoshi's Island counts as a Mario game. Water works a bit different there, as Yoshi can paddle on the surface just fine, but can't submerge on his own volition. Still counts as swimming imo. Earliest you can do this is 1-8. There is a metamorphosis bubble that let's Yoshi transform into a submarine, and he can explore underwater mazes freely. Earliest he can do that is 3-3.

@Nicobbq, in Super Mario Bros. Wonder’s first course, there is a warp pipe that is next to the ledge where the inch worm pipe comes out of. Upon exiting, there is a body of water deep enough to swim in.

is faster then trying to beat the castle regular style since the boom boom fight takes a bit without fire balls. got to beat 1-1, 1-2. then decided which is faster, grabbing the whistle in 3-1, or castle whistle.
