How to speedrun Super Mario 3D World (Switch)

As a speedrunner myself, with a time of 1:49:12, this guide is pretty helpful for people who may not be acquainted with the game. But there are a couple things I would like to make note of. Never grab the flag on a timer ending in 1,3 or 6. It’s faster to wait a in-game second than to do so. As by doing so, you only lose 0.75 seconds compared to the 2-3 seconds lost from the fireworks. You actually want to get a backup cat suit in 2-3, not 1-1, as 2-3 has a cat bell right in your path. In 1-2 it’s actually faster to throw the above shell at the Goomba stack. In 2-A, is you use the cursor to stun the Galoombas, they can be knocked out instantly with a claw swipe. In 3-1, make sure to release crouch before jumping, as you may accidentally long jump. After 3-CT, make sure to warp back to the beginning of W3 The furthest way to cross gaps is to cat claw twice in the air float with peach, then cat claw some more. This allows us to jump from the switchboard from Green Star 2, to Green Star 3, and to the end in 3-7 with a running start. A similar technique is used in 3-Train to move between the trains, which progresses the autoscroll faster. In 3-B, you can also use ground-pound jumps In 4-4, you can bounce across the biddybuds to skip the moving platform, it’s also much easier than it looks (assuming you have a cat suit) Now here’s where most people’s route diverges After 5-CT, we go to 1-CT via the hidden warp pipe at the bottom of W5. In 1-CT, we grab stars 3,4, and 5 first, then drop down and get 2 and 1. Afterwards we warp back to W5, do 5-1, and then go to 5-3, where we get all 3 stars. Otherwise everything is the same except we go to W6 immediately after 5-Castle. Now this is a common misconception, but Prince Bully isn’t RNG, he actually operates on very tight cycles. The way we do it is we go to the right of him, and rolling long jump him into the middle left pipe. He’ll usually pop out the bottom left pipe. In 6-MH, on Star 3 (The P switch one), it’s better to do it normally unless you have the touch starts down perfectly. In Motley Bossblob, you don’t want to collect the double cherries, as they do slow down the pipe entry. For 7-1, you can skip the final pipe. It’s usually done with peach and cat momentum (which is still the fastest way of moving combined with vectoring with peach) In 8-1, you do actually want to collect green star 2. Another more minor route diversion. Some people go to 8-2 like in the video for safety, but going to 8-3 saves 20 seconds on average. Keep in mind if you go to 8-3, you only get green stars 1 and 2. In 8-4, we also collect green star 2. In 8-6, collect star 2 if you went to 8-3 instead, otherwise just skip it. In 8-Castle, most people use rumble to time their jumps. Also remember to not collect any green stars, though I have seen people collect Green Star 3 for fun. Now you may have noticed I didn’t mention more advanced skips, such as Fuzzy Skip, Candle Skip, Or any of the Grumblump skips. That’s because these are much more difficult, and you’d be better off using these once you get better. Same thing for crouch boosting. I hope this helps anyone that sees it!

17:47 if you memorize the level layout you can actually skip almost all of the auto scroll as the game allows you to go ahead if the camera. The camera will always catch up to you in the spots where he showed in the video. So For the two vertical sections you can cut the time down drastically and the olny auto scroll you have to follow is the horizontal part.

Fun fact: If u do 5-3, there’s a little skip that allows u to bypass the second indoor section. Get a propeller, go to the wall, go up and climb the rest of the way. Then ur at the flag. (This is done outside where the key coins are)

LuigiMaster and Movefish are great top runners, however they use a lot more technical strats not suitable for beginner runners. If you want to watch a more beginner friendly run, watch a run from the 1:48-2:05 range

It would be worth timing all the green stars for how much time you lose off the optimal path to clear a level, and compared to alternate path levels length, and when and how many stars you need for each time the game gates you off by green stars to continue. It might be tedious as there so many of them, but if it hasn't been done completely, it should to optimize routes through the game.

Hi there i would like to clear up some route optimisations / improved movement for anyone that is interested -2 4. For more advanced players, you get all stars in 2-4 instead of missing out the 2nd star. it can be quite annoying but can be made fast with a bit of practice ( this is the 1st star you need out skip 5-2) -3 B. For hisstocrat. it is better to do the luigi skips with a ground pound. rather than a spinjump. This info is very unknow, but the 3d world trickjump community have known this for a long time. Plus it also makes the alignment to hit hisstocrat a lot easier -4 1. the ant trooper skip at the end of the level can 1. Be done without taking damage 2. also can be done with luigi ( peach makes it easier ) clips.twitch.tv/FrozenHandsomeCormorantDancingBanana-dGe14pKMIvdr_Xc1 Note: my clip here doesn't do the easiest method. Instead it is better to cat dive to the wall next to the lower platform & climb up that. 4 A. For more advanced peeps out there. it is better to throw the rocks on each other instead of all of them into the lava. its a slight optimisation that saves a few seconds but it really isn't necessary W5 Route changes Right so Nico's route here is really slow. It currently stands that the main route does 5-captain toad, then 1-captain toad, then 5-1, then 5-3, This route completely skips out 5-2 & saves quite a lot compared to the route in this video. 5-6. Instead of missing out the second star here. the current route says to get the second star in this level. This is the second star that you get to skip 5-2 7-4. for those who are scared going into this level. the skip at the end can be done itemless www.twitch.tv/tmrvonta/clip/ApatheticDepressedBaguetteUWot-ziWFWTMWGd1Az0qI this is possible with all characters apart form toad. also in the middle island where the green coins are. if you ground pound the middle island there will be a tanooki so you can do the skip if uncomfortable. 7-7. Luigi is the fastest character here, it doesn't matter much but if you are looking for a cheeky few seconds. Luigi is your best bet. 7-Castle. there is a setup for using the pointer controls. imgur.com/a/0aQfKiU My image may be a bit off but if it is. the setup is a bit more to the right. So if you move the pointer at a 45 degree angle from the setup area. the soccer bombs will fly right in bowsers face. 8-2. For more advanced peeps out there it is faster to do 8-3 instead of 8-2. this is really necessary until low 1:5x level. In 8-3 you only need to get the 1st & 2nd star in the level 8-4. If you decided to do 8-3. You will need to get the 2nd star in this level meaning you will need to get all the stars in 8-4. If you are slightly more advanced. the 2nd star in 8-6 is faster but EXTREMLEY RISKY. its probably not worth it to got for till top 10 level imo. I tried to do a minimum star run before remembering you need 170 stars for the final level. (The only other star requirement in the game is 10 stars for W1-castle, but there's a warp to W2 in W1-2, meaning you can skip that)
