At 7:51, the intended strat is to slide down the previous hill and time the jump to make it in one go. The invisible blocks are a back-up strat, in case you're unable to make the jump. It's not necessary to use a leaf here.

Just as a heads up, the strat used at 5:30 to clear 2-2 wouldn't work on the original version. In that one, if you leave the screen after killing an enemy, they respawn. Source: I have the original nes version on the switch and tried this exact strat. Killing the two koopas with a fireball, going back to get the leaf, and coming back, the koops will have respawned.

It's interesting to see how this challenge is easier (relatively speaking) in older games like this. In Mario 3 the design philosophy was "coins are 1/100th of a life" and distributed at about that ratio - you could strip all coins from the game and put a green mushroom where every ~100th coin would be and the difficulty would be about the same. Combine that with the retro game tendency to not expect you to have infinite lives by stage three and there's just far fewer coins to avoid and no pressure taking damage boosts/deaths/game overs to do it, and this challenge creates far fewer new obstacles than it does in newer games.

Just ride the red beatle, jump through the first set of coins, then do a duck jump on the second note block through the next set of coins 15:48, its also possible to do that with a racoon suit, it just requires a tight duck jump Edit: if you have a racoon suit and do a duck jump, you can press the jump button in the air and mario can still glide slowly down Edit: I tried these myself and it is possible

I just completed a full coinless run for the first time (and uploaded). Here are some different strats I used: In 2-3, my strat is to hit one of the koopa shells and tail-swipe it as it bounces back. It's a pretty tight window, but it's consistent and much faster with enough practice. In 3-3, activating the p-switch turns that row of coins into a platform, making a timed obstacle course where you have the duck-jump past some coins. It's pretty fun that way.
