How Fast Does 2, 4-D Mecoprop-p and Dicamba Kill Weeds In The Lawn + Project Lawn Day-9 Update

My friend and I purchased an over-the-counter bottle of weed spray that was labeled to kill over 250 weeds in the lawn without harming the grass. This bottle was a hose-end spray bottle that required no extra equipment to use.
The three active ingredients in it were 2, 4-D, Mecoprop-p, and Dicamba and in this video over at the project lawn I wanted to document how this product is applied and show how effective the product was over the course of about a week.

As is usually the case with weed control the cheap retail products don't ever work as quickly or effectively as the commercial grade stuff which typically costs a bit more and requires a bit more precision in application.

To be honest. I would have rototilled this yard… My yard had about 70% coverage before reseeding. I’ve dug up the sections which had no grass whatsoever, but only detached the sections where grass was present, but thin. A year later, the section which I’d dug up completely, looks significantly better and thicker.

What fertilizer did you or are you going to add? I used tenacity on my new lawn and it is working great on everything but storksbill. The stuff is tough. Any idea what I should use on them? Also I think I need to add some fertilizer but not sure what to use. Finally, it's really nice of you to take time out of your busy schedule to help your friend!

My son’s property is in a similar situation. He has 14000 sf. A lot of grass ! So we have been hitting it with SpeedZone every 3 weeks. We’re going to continue till mid August then reseed about September 7th or so. With GCI COOL BLUE. In Eastern PA. It’s a ton of work, but it will be worth it.

Speed zone is much stronger than the OTC Ortho product we are using, im sure he'll see better results with the weed Kill, id suggest starting a touch sooner with the seeding though. IMO late summer seeding is better than early fall, no matter what though I'm sure it'll look great! Love the commitment to lawn repair over the whole season.

You'd be surprised 😮 There's grass there and it'll be out in abundance by the end of summer 😃 of course we'll overseed around then to fill in gaps but it's not going to be as dramatic as you might think.

@@juzoli let me be more clear natural weed killer that won't harm/kill the grass. Moving into a new house & the previous owner neglected the yard so there is weeds everywhere.

@@colinbeasley3198 Your hands then:) All selective weed killers need to be designed artificially. Also the new grass variants are designed to work with common selective weed killers. But the common big box store weed killers are not known to cause too much harm (unlike pesticides). So you can use weed killer once (twice), and go natural after that. But natural means more weeds in the future, so you need to accept some weed at least. You can also leave it as is, completely natural. Attract more pollinators, save the bees;)
