Another phenomenal review. Much like the Order review a while back. I think the complaints people have about time are more poorly worded complaints about the games depth. As I've seen plenty of people begrudge how simplified the game is, myself included, and haven't really seen anyone complain about the actual length

That does seem to be the emerging theme when I decide to tackle these games.

@@FirstFive seems to be yeah. I suppose you could spin that to say people are getting more accepting of short games so its not all bad.

Great review as always! My favorite part was when you looked into the camera and said "it's First Fivin' Time" before analyzing whether the game was worth my time, not my money.

I love this review. You've put to words the exact feeling I had when I saw it, that it looks like a well made product that you can have a good time with, but you're not missing anything by skipping it.

I 100% agree. I love roguelikes, and I really did enjoy my time with the game! But not so much that I finished it. I spent about 8 or 10 hours and completed the entire tree and all the crown upgrades, but I hadn’t finished all the bosses. I just didn’t feel like finishing. I felt like I had seen it all.

Good points. I tried the demo a while ago and one thing that jumped out to me that you didn't mention was the sound design. The sounds of hitting the enemy and other sounds going on in combat just made it very satisfying. I probably will pick it up sometime as I liked the demo, but I do agree that 20 hours would probably be exhausting if I were to play this as my focus game. If I pick it up it would be as a side-game, of which I usually have a few, a game I can pick up without the expectation of having to invest a lot of time or focus for a session.

Can anyone comment on Switch performance? I know it was bad on release, has it been improved? Thanks for the video, always appreciate your insights.

I forget who said it (I think it was zero punctuation), but they said that a game like Persona would be kinda mid if it was exclusively the visual novel or the dungeon crawling gameplay. The reason for the success of the franchise is the toggling between the two and how they're married together with the time management/dates mechanic so you end up not getting burnt out of either or but they ultimately benefit eachother with other small mechanics. This preamble aside, do you think cult of the lamb has this sort of marriage of mechanics? You mentioned that activities usually last less than 10 minutes and that kind of reminds me of Persona's systems, but just much faster paced.
@FirstFive2 жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely. I think it achieves this. But I think that it works in a way where primarily the base building is subordinate to the combat. You need to maintain a flock to level up and hit things better, but you usually don't need to go out and hit things to support the flock.

Tried the game demo (a thing that really should exist for more games) and hooo boy was this game boring. "Polished until every interesting bit fell off" would be a rude thing to say.
