Decided to test how fast my 1979 Harley Davidson Shovelhead FXS 80 would go. Will it do better than 70 mph? Before doing so, I got to meet a new youtuber by the name of Country Coder who lives not too far away from me.

My 73 Shovel gets up to 70 with ease. I haven't tried to see how fast it goes as I'm not interested in top end. I'm about cruising and listening to the song being sung and enjoying my ride. 65-70 is typically what I'm cruising at. 48 on the rear as well. Ive been over 80 but to pass and get out in frt. At 65-70 my bike is very smooth but I don't notice much vibration at any speed only at idle. Don't really have issues with bolts either but I check it over usually before or after a ride or when cleaning it up. Maintenance is the key brother. I'm at 4k miles after my rebuild and she runs better all the time. Occasionally a small leak but easy fixes. It's all part of owning a shovel. I won't ride anything newer myself. Im 58 now and fully enjoy my rides wherever I go. Shovels do sound sweet I love mine...✌️

I had a Shovel and I did reach 80 with it was well, but at that speed it vibrated like crazy, at 70 it vibrated a lot as well, but not as much.

In the eighties I test road-tested a Shovelhead Glide without the fairing or the saddlebags. You had a belt primary drive and a belt secondary drive and the bike was smooth as silk the owner got drunk and destroyed it a week after he bought the motorcycle. Such a waste of a nice Harley.

A 3 tooth smaller rear sprocket AND a 2 tooth larger front sprocket, is quite a change!!! One tooth up front equals 2 rear teeth, so you made a 5 tooth change. That's huge!! Too huge for us western boys with our mountains. On my 03, 1200 Sporty, I changed the front from a 29 (883's come with 28 tooth front sprocket) tooth to a 30 tooth. Giving it a slight overdrive and reducing the 65mph engine speed by 140rpm or so. Sweet!!! On my 2012 Dyna, it was too over geared. Not enough hill power. So changed the front tooth from a 32 tooth, to a 31 tooth. It gave me 140 extra rpm at 70mph. Which was perfect for my 96inch motor and our mountains. Sure, I could just crunch the throttle and made the engine climb the grades, but the extra 140rpm brought the engine into a perfect sweet-spot at 70mph. Or about 2600rpm at 66mph instead of 70mph. Both changes, changed my speedo's by about 4mph. Love them both now. Interestingly, I also own an 06 Yamaha Stratoliner, 1854cc cruiser. It's a little under geared. Has about 90hp at the rear wheel. Cruises at 2800rpm at a true 70mph. Several Stratoliner and Roadliner owners, have purchased a 65 tooth Harley rear sprocket, to replace their OEM, 70 tooth rear sprocket. It works great, but has the same "too much of a change" problem. I think the riders that love it the most are low country riders like yourself. Anyway, always love your videos.

Early to mid 1970's speed limit on SOME sections of interstates were posted 70 MPH ("You kids get off my lawn!" ...LOL!) .... Shovel or ironhead = check fasteners about once a week along with other maintenance stuff IMHO... Not a fan of Loctite for steel threads into aluminum. (THIN anti seize & check to spec periodically)...UNLESS manual calls for it (usually steel thread to steel thread application OR lock tab washers/safety wire drilled, "castle" nut w/cotter pin, etc.)... Just MY opinion for the older models
@bmp72
@bmp72 2 жыл бұрын
I also use anti-seize on all steel bolts into aluminium, and use new lock washers (with the slash cut) to prevent them backinh out. I tend to use locktite when I feel the required torque is too high.

I have an amf 1974 74" shovel . Cone motor kick electric . 1985 86 before helmat law ? I rebuilt the motor 3 5/8 barrels , cam , s&s super d , lightened flywheels . Stripped down frame . Bad ass. Put about 500 miles on it no problem . Got on i5 one day and opened it up . 75 no problem . 80 85 couldn't see out the mirror but nice cruising speed . 90 starting to shake . I kept going 96 bamo ! I got hit in the chest and the face . Came off the throttle let it roll down . Scared the hell out of me . All that work down the drain . Turned out the zipper on my chaps worked its way up and and the right leg blew up . Bike was all good . Kept under 85 after that .

Been enjoying your Channel Tramp ! Now i ride a 69 Shovelhead FLPS 4 speed with new a cone bottom end it likes 50-55mph with probably need's pulling apart. Has a really comfy Pogo Saddle .it's great like riding a fair ground Horse just Bobbing along ;-) The motor has a whine like some Shovelheads....not got any worse in 15 years Pacific Mike mentioned The lower end bearings could be be a little loud and be just fine. Hard to say. Sometimes you gotta just wait and see. Sometimes there's a gear whine from the cam gear running on the pinion gear. Is it just me or do Shovelheads make strange noise's sometimes...i do love em Back in 83 i'd run at 120mph + on an tuned Evo sweet sweet engines they are indeed. i won my 1st auction a 97 Sportster 883 6k mls & i am very impressed sounds like its bullet proof may not go like Snot off a Stick but i'm chuffed to bits with it. also Been Running a 2016 Chieftain 111 ThunderStroke, since 5 years ,,, the Indian oils are way to thin for Summer other than that a sweet machine too Tink 🏴‍☠✌

@@SaddleTrampTV Nor did mine. It should have the boss in the case where the speedo drive goes as most fx model 4 speeds do. They just put a lil block of plate over the opening and wallah, fl tranny case! Now as for the lil worm drive gear, ya just gotta order the $30 lil skinny speedo gear, remove transmission shaft & put said shaft in the freezer overnight, and then heat up new gear a lil bit take the shaft outta freezer and gear will go right on there by gloved hand. Then just buy a cable & speedo drive unit. Easy squeezy

Which app did you use? I need that for my pickup, I'm using the tack, maybe you could mount on on front to use as guide for speed.

What did you say you did to your gearing? It sound like you hit the sweet spot for 65 mph cruising with whatever you have one the front and rear sprockets. Thanks!

Most of riding a shovel, pan or knuck is knowing more about the engine than how to start it and check the oil. Not sure how many commenters realize that the crank pin that the rods ride on is threaded into the counter weights of the crankshaft and if whomever had that apart last didn't know what they were doing OR the engine has had several jug and piston replacement overhauls and never had the cases split or someone has been over reving the engine trying to go 100 mph then all the gripes from the guys that had lots of vibration were most likely caused by the crank pin loosening enough for the counterweights to be matched up incorrectly and causing an offset vibration. If it vibrates much more than making your hands tingle after a long ride then you should take it to an expert that repairs shovels and get their opinion. That's assuming your handle bars aren't mounted solid though. Either way let someone who has a lot of experience and knows what they are doing look it over. Especially if the vibration gets really bad from say 1000 to 2000. Keep riding it vibrating bad and the lower end repair will just keep getting more expensive.

The vibration isn't really all that bad. No worse than my evo. And the bars are solid mount... no bushings.

Ive been wondering, didnt these bikes leave the factory with an unballanced crankshaft/piston combo ? Maybe some people got lucky and have a bike that can run 80 mph with little vibes, where others got unlucky and the bike feels like it shakes itself apart at 60 mph.

I made a mistake and took my shovel head on a 3 day ride with these guys that had new bikes , they rode 80-85 mph all the time , I tried to keep up but the vibration is just too bad , I lost my gas cap ,tag bracket and the last day my battery shorted out, never again, just ride it around town solo trips

I agree with your sentiment, puttzing is for some at certain times and then for others, its throttle back and making them purr, Not everyone's style of riding, but neither is rubbernecking lol, ILove your laid back approach friend, shows alot about someone's character, like a think twice act once type of Hombrè, I appreciate that. God bless you and ride safe on the scooters!

Got the stock belt drive on my 81 Sturgis, got the feeling it runs way more rpms than yours. I've not had it above 60mph, roughly 2500rpm. Mechanical compassion.... 2500 is where I shift at the latest. I stop every 100 miles to see where the oil spray comes from. I fixed the crankcase spraying all over my rear brake by taking half a quart of oil out, it brakes better now too :-) now the next spray is coming from the ham can air cleaner, I lubed the sponge oil filter way too much.

@@rossfarquhar7229 I think you're way too high there. I have the feeling the sweet spot is at an indicated 1700 rpm. At 3000 rpm it feels like the motor wants to leave the rest of the bike. 55mph is at 2200rpm. Even my Honda NC750 shifts at 2000rpm.
