Michael Schumacher, Jean Todt and Ross Brawn, not only changed Scuderia Ferrari forever, but they changed the sport of Formula 1. After Jean Todt joined a struggling Ferrari in the 90's, he was soon joined by Michael Schumacher who had already won back to back championships with Benetton. They were soon joined by Ross Brawn and went on to transform the team, and turn Ferrari into the most dominant force F1 had ever seen at the time. With 5 straight championships, the dream team had an enormous amount of power within the team. And maybe, a bit too much for Ferrari's liking. Enjoy!

Absolutely. He was the first to come and the last to leave the garage, stayed with the engineers up until very late. He knew all their names and sent every single one of them a gift when they had won. So everyone would work even harder knowing they get appreciated so much. There will never be anything or anyone like Michael Schumacher and Ferrari. This is simply a once in a lifetime experience I was glad I witnessed.

Absolutely, sure I have a few more favorites like Jim Clark of the past and while still early on, I go for Max Verstappen too in this age but could later prove to be wrong? Just say that what I see now, any racer worth his $ will not doubt the subtle techniques from that young man and his read of the track. But we all know, it is the right man in the right team at the right place and time that will produce the titles, not necessarily the skills alone of any given racer. That is also the reason I always slightly chuckle inside when reading these "Hamilton is the goat" sentences, especially from the crowd where you can tell don't know their apex's from their toe in's, their lift and coast's from their engine strat's, aso.. etc.. All these so called new fans the hypocritical establishment want in for $ and $ alone, lack of love the racing itself, just want to show off their religion, yes worship at highest level and they do not even know why they are doing it it looks like? Me too admit that Hamilton is a fantastic driver no doubt, but also a spoiled child at times with his passive aggressive sneers, comments with a sledge hidden in a sock aimed at others, constant blaming, never taking responsibility even in his own team we are supposed to act like he and he alone understood there was something wrong with a car concept and Merc got wrong alone, against his will? Just examples, even taken some credit for the new reg change 2014 when we all know it was Ross Brawn who actually talked him into joining Merc, convinced him of it not his own choice by analyzing the situation, Schumached did not only leave the winning formula at the time for a team in chaos, he stayed day and night with mechanics, designers building the cars, dialing them in. Dedication on a different level, Schumi had other offers from top level teams at the time too so the saying goes, he choose none of the easy ways to fastest title possible he tool a leap of faith and dedicated knowing full well he had it in him to take a good car to victories, he was for real in F1 despite some silly mistakes done, like they all do with different degree of seriousness. I like Max cause he is not false, always political correct trying to be liked, but the talent is there, take that over self proclaimed or media hyped God status any day. So yeah Michel's 7 weight heavier than Hamilton's 7, no way around that.

The Ferrari F2002 will probably remain my favorite F1 car forever. With Schumi behind the wheel, this car didn't just dominate the opposition, it displayed an automotive might that was on another level entirely. Schumi was mathematical world champion after 11 out of 17 races, and when the season was over, thanks to the fantastic drives of Schumi and Barrichello, Ferrari had as many constructor's points as _all other teams combined._ They were truly unrivaled, then. Maybe, _just maybe,_ we might see another title for the Schumacher name with Mick at Mercedes.

After joining Ferrari he was still fighting for the Championship every year, even if the car was complete dogshit. He was such a beast - In the late 90s there wasnt even a debate of who is the best on the grid. Atleast i dont remember when that was the case last time. Senna was batteling and losing against Prost.. - Hamilton vs Vettel and Verstappen. People always say Schumacher had never a competitor in his own team. The reason was, nobody in the entire sport could match his racecraft. Its similar to what Verstappen is doing nowadays.. Who do you want to race against him? He will crush everyone anyways. Niki Lauda was maybe as special as Michael. But thats also decades ago and he couldnt dominate the sport nearly as michael did. In fact - nobody did. Just Hamilton, but he really had the undisputed best car for nearly a decade - and still lost 2 titles while sitting in the best car on the grid (vs Rosberg and Verstappen). This is something totally unimaginable for Schumacher.. The only way he would lose in the best car (or even just a competetive car) is when he got a broken leg half of the season.

A bit more context. Michael and Ross Brawn first met in the WEC ("Group C" as it was called) when Ross was working for Jaguar and Michael was driving for Mercedes. That's why Ross wanted to bring Michael to Benetton when the opportunity arose. Briatore had no clue who Michael actually was.

I think that will be difficult. Ferrari was so successful back then because Montezemolo let the team around Jean Todf work in peace. He practically shielded the F1 team from the rest of the company and the management. Since Monte has been gone, every team boss has some manager breathing down his neck who thinks he knows better. It can't work that way. Why, for example, have Mercedes and Red Bull been so successful in recent years? Because Wolff and Horner have the sole say and because the structures have remained stable, with a few minor exceptions. Horner has been with the team since 2005 and Wolff since the end of 2012. Consistency pays off...

If there is someone who can do it, Vasseur is the guy. It's my opinion that Ferrari's upper management is its own worst enemy, and there are people to whom their personal reputation within the company is more important than winning. It's a similar problem to Toyota's upper management, though for different reasons. The Team Principal needs to be exactly that -- the person calling the shots. Binotto was not that guy. Maybe Vasseur is.

Thank you for your work. I wrote many comments about that Ferrari era and why it was that successful. Ferrari literally didn't win anything without the influence of these four since 40 years. Byrne and Michael were advisors the year Kimi won the title. I'm so happy that I watched nearly every race live between 1997 and 2007. As a German and huge Michael Schmacher fan that era was special. I remember Michael saying after he had driven the '95 Ferrari V12, that he believed he could have won the championship with that car. According to Irvine, the '96 Ferrari apparently was terrible to drive, and he couldn't get his head around the fact that Schumacher had somehow managed to win 3 races, which possibly could have been 4 if it wasn't for the blown engine in France, where he started from pole. And speaking of that era, I also remember Gerhard Berger saying after he moved to Benetton in '96, how very difficult it was to drive Schumacher's '95 Benetton, and that it would take only someone with the highest ability to drive it. I'm not going to go into his driving style in detail, but I'll say that he drove on a knives edge, a small error would send you flying, it's fascinating to read about if you get a chance. But it was Schumacher who built this team around him, he knew every mechanics name, including their family members! This is why to me, he was the best 'all round' driver in history, and it was him that brought glory to Ferrari, because hadn't he gone there, it would not have happened for them. Would he still have had succeeded if there was no Brawn or Byrne? I believe so, yes, because they had the money and resources, but how much success is hard to say.

The reason Ferrari managed to win a race in 1994 was the ban on active suspension. They were dreadful in both 1992 and 1993. Their 1995 car was surprisingly good, but in 1996, the year Schumacher joined, they once again had a dog of a car. They did improve from there and their 2002 and 2004 cars were incredibly good, but overall I'd say their dominance was mainly because of Schumacher.

I am certain if Michael didnt retire at the end of 2006 he would have won 07 and 08. The Ferrari made a significant step forward in 07 and his only rival Alonso was busy fighting with his own team. Kimi while excellent could never perform with the ferrari and bridgestone tires like with the Mclaren and Michelin tires. Schumi would have beaten him easily, especially since this was still his team.

I think ferraris biggest stumbling block in recent years is their own attitude. They seem to think that they deserve to be at the front of the grid because they have been around the longest. But in F1 you have to earn wins, championships etc. Ferrari is becoming the joke team in F1, all talk, no action

In recent years? You mean in their entire history. Enzo Ferrari created Ferrari because of falling out with Alfa Romeo. The first Ascari championship is basically worthless because Ferrari was the only manufacturer actually running Formula 1 spec cars in the championship that year. Ferrari then had sporadic success while several of their drivers died in the 60's/70's. Lotus and Cosworth bootyblasted them for decades. Lauda brought them back to prominence then they had a falling out. Giles died. Scuderia Ferrari languished for years. Enzo Ferrari himself died. The team remained a joke until the Benetton think tank all decided to join Ferrari and then Ferrari forced Schumi to retire so they could sign Kimi who largely won 2007 because McLaren had a civil war clownshow.

As a big Ferrari fan I want to say: not enough credits to the brilliant people in the factory. Feels bad to every time hear Italians cannot win in F1, because this is not true. Technically they are the best of the best. MotoGP is ruled by Italians and in Mercedes and other winning F1 teams Italian engineers have done alot. (Yes even on Honda and Yamaha). For this reason I wanna say give some credit to the people in the factory in Ferrari. Also because of them we achieved those records. They are amazing brilliant engineers who need a good leader right now and a winning mentality!!!

Sometimes it seems as though Ferrari detest winning by default, and despite their great power do anything they can to prevent themselves from securing championships. They need figures like Brawn, Todt, Schumacher, etc. to forcefully wrangle them into winning against their will. Figures that are simply not present today on the grid, it doesn't matter what driver you put in their car, they will find a way to lose.

Its the 1995 Ferrari 412 t2 v12. Schumacher tested it at the end of 1995. It is said when he got out of the car, he told ferrari he could challenge for the championship in that car. Alesi and berger won only 1 race with the car

It's interesting (and somewhat amusing) to note that Michael wasn't just s Champion for two different teams, each of which became contenders as s direct result of Michael's skills both as a driver AND contributor to many areas of the teams' development, but that he also had a hand in championships well after his 2nd retirement. In fact, Mercedes and the cars that Hamilton won with as their driver, are a direct result of what Ross brought Michael into the team for: to help build a contending team and car. Were it not for Michael, Mercedes would likely have struggled more as a team; and they certainly wouldn't hsve fielded those great cars for Hamilton to sit in.
