@markk3652 Ай бұрын
The lack of maintenance is only half of the problem. I believe that in the case of these modern engines the engineers design it to fail. The size of that timing chain, not the length, but the actual size of the links, looks to be way undersized for the job it has to do. In older cars, there was only one camshaft, the chain went from the crank to the cam. Those timing chains were massive in comparison to these new ones. I understand why they have been a lighter chain to increase fuel economy, but in the end, it's more expensive. The length of chain, the number of sprockets, the number of direction changes around the sprockets, as well as the dirty abrasive oil is where these lightweight undersized chains are going wrong.

I don't understand why some people are so hesitant to get an oil change. My husband, Grumpy Old Man, is not a mechanic, so we keep our vehicles maintained. We can get our oil changed nearby for about $40.00, and they check all of the levels and tire air pressure. And luckily for us, we have a garage about 6 or 8 miles from us that does great work, and they're honest people. Just in the last couple of months, we've had new tires put on both vehicles and oxygen sensors put on both. Oh yeah, and an oil change on one vehicle. The tires on our 97 Dodge Dakota (we named 'him' Mojo) still looked like new as far as tread goes (Goodyear Wrangler = good tires) but were dry rotted (after about 10 years). We went with the Eco Path (I think that's the name) tires this time. Anyway, we maintain our vehicles. I don't want to be broke down on the side of the road.

Chain design has a lot to do with chain life. Toyota V6 ohc chain at 300,000 miles has less wear than a recent GM v6 ohc chain at 50,000. Even with good maint. Check out The Car Care Nut channel. I have a jeep wrangler with the 4.0 and I change it every 3 months or 3000 miles but I usually change it about 3 or 4 times per year and I sometimes change it at about 2500 or so miles. I am a big Jaguar fan. Their Ingenium engine has a bit of a reputation for being unreliable. But when you suggest as they do, oil changes are carried out at 20,000 miles I am not surprised they fail. For me that would be somewhere between 4-5 years between changes. That’s why they fail. I change my oil at least twice a year and have never had an engine problem- even when I was doing 20-30,000 miles a year. Mind you, it costs we £300 an oil change at my local Jaguar dealer but it’s worth it even though I now drive their 5 litre V8 which has a good reputation for reliability (once they fixed the original Nikasil and timing chain problems).

Great video and explanation. Years ago in the 60's and 70's small block Chevy timing chains would eventually stretch and get loose enough to wear against the inside of the timing cover at 100,000 plus miles. Looking at the length of the chain in the engine in the video I would estimate the chain length would be dramatically longer than what was used in a small block Chevy. As you state many more pivot points that can wear and wile the wearing of each point is insignificant on its own add them all together along with gear teeth wear and the slop becomes quite evident. The more often the oil gets chained and new oil is introduced inside the crankcase the less chance sludge and debris can add to the premature failure of a chain as well as other internal engine components.

I have the same engine. It was my first vehicle with a cartridge filer, after seeing how shrunk and twisted the filter was after a (normal) 5000 mile oil change I decided to do more frequent oil changes, went back to doing them every 3500 miles. I'd rather spend a little more on oil change than the expense of what you are doing now. Much cheaper than buying these extended warranties for sure

I replaced the timing chain & sprockets in my 5.7 litre Chevrolet LS1 V8 powered Holden VY SS Commodore over 5 years ago while I was doing a hydraulic lifter replacement & I was also replacing the front timing cover gasket,it was all black & brown underneath the timing cover on the engine block. The engine was neglected once in its life which is probably why the hydraulic lifters were noisy, they were mushroomed. I fitted a Rollmaster timing chain & sprocket set. We did the same thing as that in my dads Holden VX Commodore which runs the 3.8 litre Buick L36 V6 engine when he was replacing the engine in it. What I noticed about the L36 timing chain is that Buick still used the same old crappy link chain as they did back in the LN3 engine which my brother had running in his old Holden VN Commodore,I don't know why because the OEM Chevrolet timing chain was of the roller type, the link chain had a problem with the links seizing up & the timing chain had a habit of stretching then becoming rattly which was common in the Buick LN3 powered Holden VN Commodores. The fix is to fit a roller timing chain, we fitted a Crow cams branded one into the Buick L36 V6 engine !

Kenny, I have a Mazda 1996 B2600 dual cab Ute (pickup)with the Mazda 2.6l G6 petrol engine (I’m in Australia so not sure what they are called over there). I bought it new and took delivery on the 29th of Feb 1996. My Dad always taught me that the cheapest maintenance money can buy is oil and grease. The Ute looks pretty rough these days as it’s never spent a day in its life under cover and Queensland Coastal sun is not kind to anything, especially paintwork. The oil on it is changed religiously every 10,000klm and I have only ever used high quality synthetics. No cheap crap! The engine is original except for the valve followers and it currently has 513,000klm on the clock. I drive the wheels off it every day and it has never let me down. I replaced a rocker cover gasket a few weeks back and the inside of the “MOTOR”😀😁 is so very clean. I do all my own maintenance and this just reinforces what you are saying. My wife's `14 Dart Ltd 2.4L Tiger Shark has 333K+ miles on the odometer, most all of them back and forth to work each day, 50 miles there and 50 miles back home. I have changed the oil every ten thousand miles with Mobil1 0W-20 oil and a Wix extended drain synthetic oil filter. Installed a K&N drop in air filter the day we got it home. Many folks figure ten thousand miles is too long on oil and filter intervals, yet this Dart does not use oil and runs basically as it did when new. I check the oil often and it is less than a quart low at ten thousand miles when the oil change is due. It too has a timing chain that we realize has to be properly cared for and the only way to do that is to use the very best oil and filters changing it often. I also only burn name brand premium gasoline, because i know it is cleaner and the computer system will adjust the timing and fuel mixture to it's optimums based on the octane performance of the fuel instantly, and in this engine, even varies the valve dynamics, which is what Multi-Air is about. We steadily get over thirty miles per gallon. This car has had very little problems, even the fuel pump is original; i credit the high quality clean premium fuel with that aspect. Take care of you car, it will take care of you and in my case, my wife, when driving it so far daily. Keep up the good work Kenny, we enjoy your videos!

@2:54, actually at each pin there are three wear points, but two contribute at the same rate of wear. You can’t count the outer ends because they never pivot, they are swayed in place so they never pivot. So in truth on a roller-type chain there are only two wear points per ‘pivot’ pin.

I referred to the engine as a motor and the fire pump serviceman was quick to reply and say that the diesel engine didn't have any electrical power, so I was wrong to refer to the engine as a motor. I countered his arrogance by stating that when they run cars at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway it's not referred to as Indianapolis ENGINE Speedway do they? I can still remember the look on his face when he had no comeback for that. Also, two- and three-wheel vehicles are referred to as MOTORcycles, never have I heard the terminology ENGINEcycles.

Yes people go for the manufacturer interval, which is designed to get the engine out of warranty before something fails, and thus you either buy a new engine, overhaul it, put in a used one, or trade in the scrap for a new one. All 4 result in profit for the manufacturer, and the long oil change intervals also are profitable, because you go to the dealership, and they can sell you new pads and rotors, because the long interval means you were through the pad and damaged the rotors, or the suspension is shot and needs bushes. But the manufacturer only has to pay for 6 oil changes in warranty as part of a plan, but gets to upsell 6 times, and no 7, with the big sticker shock, is not covered, and you have to fix it, as you still owe money on the loan, and it needs to run for another 2 years before you have paid it off. So loan more money from the dealer, now you are there for another 3 years as customer.

The first recorded use of 'engine' to mean an electrical machine driven by a PETROLEUM MOTOR occurs in 1853. I don't understand where calling a combustible engine a motor is wrong?

The equinox and Cruze all these direct injection engine vehicles are purchased and then the owners drive them and they will change the oil when the information maintenance is saying so . But it's actually 20% over due . They run them low on oil and it accelerates the wear because it's too hot. The level is critical! They drive them for 10 years and wonder why one day they need a 5k engine replacement 😂😂😂😅

Maintenance the most important thing to do well my 1997 Toyota Hilux cam chain hasn't stretched at all when l bought it 4 years ago l got no service history at all l have checked my cam chain and under the rocker cover l had to put a new gasket on it no evidence of sludge have lifted many rocker covers on many vehicle's l have owned and they are black from sludge not through lack of maintenance they are just bad engines

The confusion starts when the incorrect nomenclature is used to describe a condition. The metal links did not stretch so to say the chain stretched is not an accurate description. The chain got longer end to end due to connection points wear as you accurately describe

Motor can mean both ice or electric motor. Think about it, why would GM be called General Motors if all it means was electric motor?

To all those “Motor” people… For Motor Company sell motor cars that people take to a motorway and race, sometimes the motor will blow and if you girlfriend is sympathetic she will too! But if you change the motor oil regularly the motor can last a long time, unlike the sympathetic girlfriend.

When you change a motorcycle chain you have to change the sprockets as well. Do you have to do that with a motor as well?😂

The sprockets also wear (remember shiny areas on the sprocket that he showed?), so should be replaced if a chain is worn/replaced.

@@stuartbrock7586 - I suppose this could go either way, depending on car manufacturers. Since all parts do wear together, it’s best to replace all of the associated parts, including the plastic wear guides, when replacing a timing chain.

Timing chains are a bad idea, period, especially on a Vee engine...Add in cheap chinese chains, crap metal, crap guides and tensioners. Oil viscosity is another issue, engine oil isnt heavy enough for chain lubrication because of chain speed. Basic engineering. In Europe, we dont have these problems because we don't drive around in big, low output Vee engines. Most are straight 4 turbo engines and belt drive cams. Way simpler and more reliable. Better gas mileage too...These are the facts...🤔😳😳🇬🇧

First of all, anyone picking your videos apart because you say "Motor" is just picking your videos apart. Second, I've always maintain my wife's 2015 Chevy Equinox and because of Chevy's design flaw with their engines (and they know it) this stretch happens. I know it's about money, but they should fix this for free for customers who maintain their engines and vehicles but have this problem because of their mistake! But they won't. Keep on wrenching!
