I believe originally it was going to be called "fighting fantasy" too but that was scrapped because at the time they didn't want to deal with copyright with an existing book series and "final fantasy" was their last resort

The story of Final Fantasy saving a company that's been through many names at this point-in-time it wasn't just a hit it was the mega-hit they needed it blew people's minds with story gameplay and music it's my favorite documentary.

Yes, it was his "Final attempt" to make a game, but the decision for Final Fantasy being the name came from a love of alliteration, the team wanting the initials to be FF. While Fighting Fantasy was a name also on the table, but trademark concerns over a table-top game with that name, lead to changing it to Final Fantasy.
