You ever play video games before? I’m sure you’ve heard of internet personalities that can now make a living by live streaming on different platforms and playing Fortnite. Gone are the days when the stereotype of an average nerd is someone awkward with no social skills - attractive people that play games do exist! But according to a new study - excessive gaming can be the cause of physical unattractiveness if you don’t have a healthy balance between taking care of yourself and sitting for long periods of time. A scary looking projection of what the average gamer will look like in 2040 caused a lot of discomfort for internet users since people are actually starting to look like this model. Head dents, bad posture, eye strain - is the extensive list of debuffs you can get from being a gamer worth it? How Gaming Makes You Ugly #edvasian

@AnneaWasHere I don't think it's that they don't realize I think it's the illusory truth effect. The media and some doctors says video games are bad for kids and gen x/boomers are more likely to believe that than the younger generations (could be for a literal list of reasons) and because it was fed so much to them thru the media and doctors they started to believe it.

I'm 33 and have worked at a office job for 10 years in healthcare. I have also gamed since i was a child. At one point for hours at a time for fun (not income). My job allows me benefits, health insurance, is unionized, reimburses gym, allows me good breaks, and i don't bring my work home in the slightest. I get accrued leave and raises every year. I'm not sure the same can necessarily be said of game steamers that rely on various sources of income that might not necessarily be consistent. Again, I'm not sure they can be compared. I get physically ill from playing for long periods of time, but do not get sick at work in front of my computer. I would never stop someone from pursuing this for themselves ofc. But hands down i prefer my office job.

I worked an office job for a year. half the time it was remote which means I have my laptop on the coffee table if I hear an email come in and otherwise go about my day cooking/cleaning/watching TV. the other half you're in the office and get distracted by colleagues every half an hour and you stand up over the cubicles and have a chat. every 2 hours everyone goes for 'coffee' where really only 1 person gets a coffee and everyone else is standing around chatting. it's still not great but it's not like the boomers haven't had this slacking shit figured out

The thing that I don't get about text neck is that people only talk about it when it has to do with phones, While there are book loves such as myself who spend 4-6 hours a day staring down at a book which results in the same thing as looking down at a phone and yet no one brings that up, and all the blame goes on phones. Which is kinda goofy if you ask me.

Them putting eczema on there as if it’s a result from gaming actually pisses me off. Eczema is a medical condition and usually it runs in the family. I have eczema and I’ve been had it since I was a little girl, not caused by gaming. And insinuating that eczema makes you ugly is just extremely foul. I’ve seen people who look like God’s favorite and they have eczema. I’m just tired of people labeling eczema as something ugly as that’s what I was called my entire life. Over a medical condition. It’s so frustrating.

the eczema of the example in the video is caused by stress, nothing else, they aren't blaming gaming, they are blaming the stress it comes when you are sleep deprived, don't have enough water and nutrients, and your only worries are to win. Which is a thing that totally happens! Eczema is a fancy way to say dermatitis, dermatitis are definitely caused by stress sometimes, for sure by poor skin conditions. Just imagine staying with your sweaty back attached to a plastic chair for more then 10 hours day. If your skin isn't irritated after well... Congrats I guess. Some eczema aren't caused by genetics or the immune system, some are caused by how bad you treat yourself. There's no reason to be angry at it. I too have an eczema, probably caused by a disorder of my immune system, but I can totally get over the fact eczema isn't exclusive to me...

it’s worth saying that Michael is a representation of what excessive gaming looks like rather than a casual gamer who can actually bother to take care of themself. the streamers with head dents most likely have them just because of their long hours of streaming - note the man who mentioned he had been wearing them for 12 hours, as opposed to the casual 3-7 hours the type of headphones also matter as gaming headsets often have a tighter grip over basic headphones you could find at Walmart or even just Beats. since streaming/gaming is their profession, they would be wearing these headphones for more than half a day everyday. the streamer who shaved his hair supposedly had his head return to its normal shape at some point. that part of your head is quite soft.

I’m a casual gamer who is also studying to go into the medical field, and I know for a fact that none of us casual gamers will even look close to how Michael looks. You can only physically get to that point if you consistently game and spend all of your time doing so. Michael was only made as a way to scare every gamer into not playing video games anymore because they see it as being “unproductive”. Plus, like Ed said, all of these issues can easily be caused by many other things, including many jobs like society deems as “productive” like an office job or physical labor jobs. And to physically get a dent in your SKULL (which is pretty much impossible) you would have to basically wear your headphones 24/7 for years on end, and even then, bones naturally revert back into place if you don’t keep a stressor on them (like for example braces or a scoliosis brace, once you get your braces taken off or you stop wearing your brace, your bones will naturally go back to the way they were originally) So to summarize (TL;DR) the whole infographic for Michael is stupid and is full of blatant misinformation to scare you, so don’t stress over it. You’ll be fine.

That headphone dent hit home for me in a different way. I only wear glasses outside (sunglasses, obviously) and have been wearing them since I was 14 (39 now). And about 7 years ago, I realized I have an indent behind both my ears from the ends of the arms on the glasses. I didn’t think I wore them all that much for such a thing to happen but then I thought about it, I wear them unless it’s literally raining or nighttime, and I spend A LOT of time outside. For recreation alone it’s at least 30 hours a week, basically for the past 25 years. So I’m not surprised these gamers have dents from something they have been wearing for like 12 hours a day, it makes sense really.

the Michael reveal is actually scary. i studied game art at university and there were a lot of people in the games courses that look like that and it’s not okay. it was really difficult to go to class sometimes because the lack of personal hygiene that people had (as well as generally very terrible, misogynistic behavior) was disruptive to my studies and mental health. i’ve not watched the video fully as of writing this, but it’s a serious problem that so many people in those circles do not understand the importance of taking care of themselves. i once saw somebody come in to class in sweatpant-type shorts that had literal p*** stains on them. these people already exist and though they aren’t the absolute majority, there is a concerning amount of people like that for sure.

Take regular breaks - every hour or so get up and stretch and walk around a bit, even if it's only for a minute. Sitting for long periods of time is one of the worst things for your health. I know the struggle though, I've been playing games for hours straight since I was a kid lol. Taking little breaks and moving helps

Take breaks, stretch, look into making your laptop usage more ergonomic and consider investing in blue light glasses. Working out also helps with the posture -related issues. I've also heard that for eyestrain you should go to your window, and look at something far away, for 1 second for every minute you've spent staring at your screen. It takes a LOOONG time before any of this is irreversible, so don't worry too much! Focus on creating small habits that prevent long-term issues

The head indent thing is real, me and my co-workers at a call center all discovered it one day... it's crazy I feel like ours is thinner because of the type of headphone band for call centers is different. Now I worry about balancing where I put my headphones. But considering for call centers its forty hours a week for years... I hope Michael is okay. (Also damn, I was playing Minecraft after my genshin dailies and if I hadn't just showered that would have been it for me.)

Check out historical artificial cranial modification or deformation, also called head shaping, head binding, there have been cultures throughout history and the world that reshape skulls. It can be done, sometimes as simply as with cloth binding. Sort of similar in practice to foot binding. Our bodies are more moldable than you might think.

@@Ajia_No_Envy earphones are crap and have way worse sound quality tho. not to mention that they can easily fall out of your ears if you're not careful. besides, normal headphones won't give you a dent like that. most headphones aren't nearly tight enough to squeeze your head like that, it's usually just the high-end gaming headsets that are built like that and grab your head like a vice. also most headphones are designed for comfort and include thick foam padding on the band so it isn't uncomfortable on your head. i've been using headphones almost exclusively for 20 years and have never had a head dent lol.

Kids on the couch hunched over trying to get a better look at the TV or looking down at their Gameboy's until the batteries ran out. And yes that was me. I mainly use a laptop and tilt the screen rather than my neck. Which is important because I have a defect in my cervical spine.
