Scru's 100% right about Android 16's death being the final straw. It's not just that, though. For Gohan's whole life he's known that if someone dies they can just be brought back with the Dragon Balls, but 16 was entirely a machine. Cell killed the one person that can never be brought back and Gohan understood that. You add those together and that being the moment that turned him SSJ2 makes, well... *Perfect* sense.

Coldest character in dragon ball for me is Kakarot, aka Goku when he locks in. Gohan just looks the coldest because when he's locked in is against enemies that he could easily kill. When Goku locks in is against enemies on his level, and even them feel the difference, they know if they fuck up that ''clown'' they were fighting few seconds ago will pack them up.

Honestly who even cares if its well written or not at this point. DB has crossed that point a while ago. Freeza went from Namek level to God Blue level in mere 4 months just by beating up his underlings. 17 went from getting manhandled by imperfect cell to God Blue level or atleast very close to it if you wanna cope that Goku was holding back. Freaking Roshi went from struggling against Kid Goku and Tien back in DB to casually wiping the floor with Freeza soldiers and even went against a few of the handpicked warriors of other universes. so in terms of who fault it is Its Krillin for destroying the remote Vegeta for not finishing Cell and Fighting Trunks who was trying to kill Cell 18 for not running away when 16 told her to dip kinda at fault Goku for not eating a Senzu Bean when he needed to Not at fault Piccolo gave his all Tien weak but still helped 16 and 18 escape Trunks, the anime makes it look like he's also at fault for not killing 18 when he had the chance but thats only in the anime, in the manga as soon as Cell noticed 18 he told Vegeta to stop trunks and then hit everyone with Solar Flare and absorbed 18, there was no "leave now" from Trunks to 18 they never spoke once So yea, Trunks continues to be the only person that gets shit done

Android 16's death was definitely a buildup of everything for Gohan. Throughout his life, Gohan has been in positions where he potentially had the power to stop a villain everyone else was struggling with, but he didn't because he couldn't control his power. He was the only one could really fight Raditz, but didn't know how to tap into his power, so Goku died to kill Raditz. Then later with Frieza, he had flashes of his hidden power, but again, he couldn't control it, and thereafter Krillin died. The Cell Saga was a buildup of all of this. When Android 16 dies, it's a reminder of these past incidents. It's driven home even more when Cell refers to 16 as "yet another fighter you could have saved." That really was the final straw for Gohan, especially after being told by 16 that it's not a sin to fight, which has always been Gohan's biggest drawback, his pacifism. It's great character writing.
