Just got the Step Ons and have 3 days on 'em so far. I like 'em a lot! Setting forward to lean to max makes 'em a bit harder to step into and of course when you are turning to the toe side as you get off the lift it is very difficult to step in. Other than that, I have found them to be even more comfortable than my "traditional" bindings. By the way, you make riding those rails look way too easy..... keep yourself safe! 😃👍❤🏂 Randy

I'm 48 years old. This year is my second season of snowboarding. I'm a beginner, thanks to Tommie's video's that help me a lot with my ability. I just got my first set this year. Sickkk love k2 boards I now use my dad's ambush that is older then me (I'm 16) and he just got the alchemist, the ambush still feels brand new and it has been rode hard. Definitely k2 boards are some of the best out there.

Just arrived from a week of snowboarding in French alps with burton step on and a new batalleon Goliath board have amazing time the step one we’re great only once my board came off in the chair lift but was my fault for not making sure click twice at the back . Glad to see you giving them another review! My trick to stepping out is heel up/knee forward to get out of the rear cleat, then turning my whole leg 45 degrees outward, super easy and never fails.

This is 100% recommended, never fails. You can also swap the release levers to the insides if that is for you. I’ve tried both and they both are acceptable.

I work at a ski hill and have to unbind many times going down the mountain to do my job. I actually think no-one uses these bindings more than me, like no-one. It's become so simple to me, there is not really any difference in performance worth mentioning besides the fact it's easier to get in and out of them. The only thing i find a performance enhancer would be that when you strap in, sometimes you do it tighter, sometimes looser so step ons win being a more consistent feel.

Did you try maxing out the forward lean on them or are they limited to matching the forward lean angle of the boots they are paired with? Curious to hear how the forward lean adjustments work with this system.

Two things Tommie that I would love your feedback on with regards to the step ons: First; can you do some butter tricks to see how they compare with traditional bindings. Is there enough play in them to allow you to do butters just as good as with regular bindings. Two; I think a good test for feeling secure might have been some gnarly mogul riding as that might have flexed the bindings torsionally a lot more. I will add that I rock the step ons specifically because I don’t like the feeling of straps. I don’t like having to feel like I have to crank down my straps to feel secure whereas with the step ons I always feel secure and I can keep my boots feeling comfortable without having to overnighted them in order to get good response.

I’m switching to step ons this year. What you said about the mental confidence of tightening those straps is why we won’t see pros rocking step ons for a while. I can relate to tightening down my bindings before a big line or no fall zone. Curious to see if I still do this on a splitboard after getting out of the habit of that on a solid board.

Have you ever run into an issue with taking them out/in , when you need to help someone that fell midway through the trail/slope? I’m afraid it would be hard to step on after I helped a friend or someone that had trouble. The steep of blue or black, there’s not a flat spot to put them back on?

If you do any sort of work on the snow, these are a huge hassle saver. I've got a pair that I think were fresh in the 18-19 season so they've still got that older, super responsive design, and that responsiveness has grown on me a lot.

From my personal experience, these boots take 3-4 days of riding to get them broken into and they do get really comfortable. The bindings are responsive and convenient. May not be for olympic riders, but definitely for everyone else.

Awesome review, I've been in my C60's for the past 15 years and the plastic finally decided to disintegrate this season, so I took the next "step" 😂 and picked up a set of Step-On bindings this year. It took a few runs to gain the confidence they were secure and I wasn't going to fall out of them. I just love the fact I don't have to cinch that strap down anymore to feel secure. Hopefully these will last another... 15 years or so?

I’m a big fan of the malavita bindings. I don’t care for that Burton stopped putting the upgraded straps on the cartels. The malavitas are so smooth and comfortable.

Definitely staying with the Cartels for now. It really does not take that long to strap in and I feel the extra security is worth it. My worst wrecks on a board have been due to binding failures. First the back heel plate simply snapped, then cut my calf pretty badly as I tumbled, the other the toe strap broke and I caught an edge, was able to recover but not avoid the tree that suddenly appeared and was impaled by a branch. I buy new bindings every 3 years now even if they seem ok but in those wrecks, my foot stayed partly secured even when a part of the binding completely failed. Not sure what would happen to the strap-ons if a connection completely failed.

I dislocated my knee cap when my board went on one side of a tree and my body around the other pivoting around the 6"tree on the front binding. The bindings didn't budge. Still rocking them.

so ive been snowboarding twice and so far ive been able to get the hang of most basics like riding toe edge, heel edge, even doing some ollies and some 180s but the thing i cant figure out is how to do you make it easier to ride switch? im left foot forward and i can only go a few feet going very slow riding switch so i was wondering if theres anything i can do that will help that. also whats an easier way to ride on icyer snow?

IMO, you need relax and just get experience. Figure out carving and riding blues and blacks proficiently then worry about tricks and switch.

Boot durability is a major issue with this year's Burton lineup. I have a pair of photon step on from early Dec used less than 14 days and the flex is totally gone plus the liner pack out like it's been on 100 days. Going down steep lines gives me no confidence so I use them for simple beginner lessons and some small park jumps. Step on boots gets wore out much quicker than regular boots since all the support is in the boots and no straps to alleviate any pressure. At this rate I need to buy 2 pair of step on boots every season as oppose to keep one pair of regular boots for two season. Other boot brands that does step on may do a better job in terms of longevity.

I’ve had step-ons for two seasons now. They work well and the “drawbacks” are hardly noticeable at all unless you’re super picky. If you get the right boot set-up, they should be spot on.I hear a lot of “experts” or whatever smack talking them, but as someone who’s been riding normal bindings since ‘92, I can say that this set up functions well. As you stated, doing a lot of freestyle may require a softer boot or break-in. If you want optimal tweakability, step-on may not the best since the system locks at the heel pretty firmly which will limit side to side bending of the boot more than strap bindings. Sooner or later, they may perfect a version for park use.

Full disclosure, I’m brand new, have gone snowboarding 3 times now, and bought these as my first bindings because I figured it’d be way more efficient than standard bindings, and I can never figure out how to get in them in a way that actually speeds up the process lol

Many reviewer say good things about the step on. But non will actually use them as their daily equipment. I had a set 3years ago when it first came out. Sold it after 2 months and back to the traditional straps. For people who want engagement and customization on their binding won’t like step on.

This is a good review of a great product. I have ridden these since their debut. I'm not sponsored and not overly loyal to any corporation or branding. No bias here. They aren't quite like strapped in. As Tommie stated they're a little stiffer and extremely responsive. I have the photon boots with dual boa. They do break in after use and the dual boa is very adjustable. I had the first year ones, and now the second year ones as there were a few tweaks to make the boa hardware longer lasting and more durable. I have 2 sets of the bindings as well so I can have 2 sticks handy. I'm 5'10" 180 and I ride a 2016 Burton mystery flying v 158, also a Lib Tech dark knife 164 wide for deep fluffies. The ease of access saved my life upsidedown in a rock well just this year. I'm always waiting for someone to strap in since it is so quick to step on and ride away. They stay put and are worthy of hard riding and hard landings. Kids joke at it here and there but get more genuinely inquisitive once they ride my line. I recommend trying them at least.

They’ve never came loose or off. I do a lot of snowboarding on the east coast where it’s often icy. I took them out west a few times on POW days with no issue. To each their own but I like the ease. I have back problems as well

I did 76/83 straight days in Austria. These things are pretty junk. Both hammocks came off (they're held on by a single pop rivet and two plastic teeth),. The toe clips (rear) wore down becoming less reliable for entry and ultimately releasing during riding. The gas pedal (under foot) falls off because it's only retained by little plastic teeth. Happened 2x to me and I found someone else's on the mountain... The Photon boots fell apart completely across both toe boxes. This is because they stiffened the whole boot and then relied on unreinforced double stitching at the toe seam. If you carve and want more than 40-5 days forget these. If you are true beginner and want maybe 4-5 seasons doing only a week or two each season then yeah these are good. As long as you have the balance to take advantage of the entry system... And never progress your riding...
