I’ve looked at this before, the pickups are EMG 45 size and it looks like the 45 H models could drop in and cover all the strings. But I agree about the pickup placement, going for a Dingwall thing is not necessary here. The body shape appears to be inspired by the ESP Ltd. Stream models. I think I’ll wait till Thomann / Harley Benton gets back in to multiscale Bass, which I’m positive they will.

Really nice review. Thanks. I've been looking at this one for some time but glad to have watched your video first. The super long scale at the low string is what makes this one tempting for me (over the other slightly more expensive models that you mentioned). I wonder if there are many alternatives that have 36/37 inch scale that are more affordable than the Dingwall basses?

Saw the multiscale bass comparison before and I have to admit, the RedSub was the bass that impressed me the most. Together with the Dingwall it sounded far better than the Ibanez and the Spector to me. Very articulate and clear with that certain growl that you're looking for when you want a bass for modern aggressive rock/metal style tones. I'm still waiting for someone to build a multiscale Explorer style bass. That reverse body design really makes sense in combination with fanned frets, I think, like Dingwall did their take on the Thunderbird with the D-bird. Maybe I should try one of those, though I'm a little bit afraid of that extreme difference in scale length between the strings, Dingwall uses. Might be a challenge to get used to that and switching back to a regular fretted bass, I guess. It's a shame, that the RedSub has all these ergonomic flaws. I really like the sound and the look of this bass.

I know you've said you think they're kinda ugly, but I've love to see you play an LTD. My first "real" (not under 300 dollar) bass was a used LTD that had been fitted with actual ESP pickups and a diffrent preamp (still don't know what the guy put in it, only know it was not stock) and those basses are magic, to me. played in bars for years with it, and even know, not able to play live due to work and school, when i jam with people, its what I bring.

Eh. If it were like 100$ or so cheaper it’d probably be worth it, but at this rate you’re better off saving some more money for something nicer. The pickups don’t have a lot of character to them and the preamp and tuners aren’t doing any favors either lol

I picked up the 6 string model a few months ago as my first multiscale bass. Its half the price of the cheapest Ibanez 6 multiscale and 1/5th of the price of a Dingwall NG, of course theres going to be compromises, but I can't justify playinjg close to £1000 just to try a multiscale. That being said, I was expecting hot trash and it surprised by being decent, and has scratched my multiscale itch for now. It will be exciting when other companies start getting into the more budget end of multiscale basses.

Buying one of these in the UK from gear4music makes a lot more sense than it does for US buyers, running at 350gbp shipped. So I did! It absolutely has shortcomings (hardware could be better, but that would push the price up), electronics could be better (but that would push the price up), finish could be better (but, you know where I’m going with this…) However, it has perfectly served its purpose for me: a super affordable introduction to the multi scale market to test the water and see whether moving in this direction will fulfil what I hope it will for me - ergonomically relieving stress/tension that exacerbates arthritis and tendinitis. What’s my takeaway from owning the RedSub? I’m going to build my own multi scale bass! (Major differences in mine will be a shortened multi scale of 32” to 34” over 5 strings for even more comfort/relief in the left hand, EMG P/J pups in their soapbar housings and a shape that leans more towards the traditional to aid balance).

I'm so pissed off that I can't find a decent one. I bought one just now and returned it. There wasn't a burst on it and the scarf joint sat in the headstock instead of the neck. And overall just ugly as sin. I still really want to one, especially for that price (and I do love the design).

I got a RedSub Infinite about 18 months ago and it has many of the same problems. A few that weren't mentioned is that I think there's a real cheap preamp circuit as it does not take distortion well and hisses sorting awful around 5kHz. Also the bridge saddles can't be adjusted so setting up the thing is impossible. I came to the same conclusion, it was more expensive for me to mod this into something equivalent to an Ibanez I could have bought for the same price.

@@jeffhopkins5704 it was actually an import Spector I believe, but I suspect they all do it. That's why there is always a burst finish around the outer edge. If it was a "real" top like 1/2" thick or so you wouldn't need to hide the edges.

If it was a bit cheaper, it would def be a good mod project. Throw a tone monster preamp(which are cheap and sound good in my esp), and some emg 45 dc's. But then the tuners and so on...it adds up. But at least you can change them. I know some of the harley bentons you cant bc of their in-house design, and they make it to where the screw holes are changed or the pickup is just not the right size which is a big bummer. Better off saving for a better bass which you dont have to mod as much or at all

Just got a B-Stock 6 string for £110 ($155 USD). It needed the nut repairing and truss rod was maxed out. But 15 mins later I have a bass as good as new. I agree that the bass has terrible balance and the pickups are dull, and EQ underwhelming, but I got it for the cost of 4 packs of strings (it actually came with a set of D'Addarios on it). With some compression and offboard EQ however, it recovers well. I may replace the tuners/pickups/EQ in the future, but the pickups will be hard to find at a decent price. It is indeed a good mod platform if you can put up with the headstock dive. Even if you don't want to mod it, it is the ONLY bass that exists in this price range that can compete with a Dingwall for tone.

Does it sound great? Not really, but it sounds...Good. it gets a great sound with a Sans Amp, definitely livens it up a lot. With some upgrades it can be a great bass. I bought one not too long ago as an investment and honestly because its not overly expensive, I don't mind messing with it. Mine came nearly perfectly set up, though results may vary. I plan on upgrading the tuners, pickups, and preamp. Especially that preamp. There's an internal pot that makes it louder and all the way down its already outputting a lot of volume...all the way up is just bad. The active/passive is cool but the volume difference is just too severe to be useful, I don't mind just making it 100% active. Better pickups and a better preamp will make it a powerhouse with sound...eventually I'll shape the body to feel better standing but at the moment I personally don't mind the shape much. Overall, 6/10, worth looking into if you want to do upgrades, not the best out of the box. Definitely better basses right out the box that don't need upgrades.

Makes me wonder...do manufacturers aim low and cut certain corners while making a semi-desirable package in order to attract players looking for a mod platform? A la carte can be highly cost-prohibitive. Just make it better so we can play it as is and then one day do a few updates. It shouldn’t need to have components swapped. It’s bad enough that a lot of lower cost basses come standard with awful tuners.

I bought one of these as a way to try out the whole fanned fret thing, and had it less than a year before letting it go. The workmanship was…there was none. The frets were sharp and gritty feeling, the nut had corners protruding out of it, the binding wasn’t cut flush and in one area, stuck off the board almost as tall as a fret. The bridge pickup was intermittent, there was globs of polishing compound all over the neck, it arrived with not one, but two pressure cracks in the fretboard and there was a pickup mounting screw hanging out of the body when I took it out of the shipping container. Even at 315 USD + shipping, it was just a lousy quality instrument. Guys, I know the super low price and impressive list of supposed features is alluring, but I’m telling you first hand, all that glitters is not gold. This thing was garbage. Keep saving.

Patrick what is up with your mixes these days? The past 4 or 5 videos have not sounded that good. Everything is sounding dead and lifeless. I hate saying this but feel you should know it. Also please start putting out more videos. I dig your videos a lot. Do some more covers and things. I like your playing a lot.

Why do you put that bass so down, people get unsecure. I have the 6-String version and yes I had to do my personal prefered setup before beeing really happy. But replace your strings first, and make your guitar setup. Then try it out, and you will see, the bass is a really very good one. No need to wait for something better. If you really believe, that spending more money for your instrumet will solve your problems, go an get some bass lessons and first learn to get a good player, a good instrument does not make you a good player automatically. I can play on everything, the rest is sex on the instrument. IMHO

I hate youtubers so much, they have the exact same optimism for every product they review simply because the name of the game is sell sell sell, (kinda goes against what musicians stood for, but we have a lot of modern excuses aparently) Give me reviews without affiliate links, Its a fake, biased review, sorry.
