How GOOD was Bas Rutten Actually?
Bas Rutten began his MMA career before is was even known as MMA. The former UFC heavyweight champion spent most of his career in Japan fighting for a promotion named Pancrase where he was also the champion. But I feel like many people don't know about his career due to it happening so early during the inception of the sport and also cause of the success he found after fighting as a colour commentator and actor. But as a fighter, how good was Bas Rutten actually?

That Rutten Neck Crank brings back memories. Years ago, when I was in the military, there was a guy who used to get the better of me when we grappled. Due to my preference for wrestling and being on top, I'd normally get side mount on him. However, he'd always reverse it by first pushing my head towards his lower body. Then, he'd use his legs to grab my head and pull me down the rest of the way. It used to frustrate the hell out of me, because I knew I was capable of beating him. Well, one day I was watching my "Big DVDs of Combat" and came across an interesting move called the Rutten Neck Crank. It was the solution to this guy's escape to my side mount. As a matter of fact, his future escape attempts became the setup to the Rutten Neck Crank. He went from smirking every time we grappled to deciding that going up against me wasn't as fun as it used to be. Thanks Bas! ;)

Sebastien Deboudt you’re so lucky, I met him at some gym where a friend of mine cross trained and sparred with up n comers. He was like how Mike Tyson is now, friendly, outgoing, and doesn’t even hint at anger, all while telling you how to break a human body lol. He was showing us a body blow that he described like” this is not quite a hook, and not quite an uppercut, but both.” And even in slow mo,as he was just talking to the group of us, not even in the ring or in fight gear for that matter, even slow it looked so natural to him that THAT was what was scary about him. All the while he’s smiling and it was a real smile, not some “ I’m just doing this so the media will stop talking about my temper” looking smile that a lot of these rabid dog fighters have today

You see that also on how quickly he learned ground work. "How great was he?" is always hard to answer; like any chess genius from 100y ago would lose to any of the top 100 players now as they learned. You can only be that much better than the people around you! Or once you're solidly better than anyone at your club, it's not practically possible to improve there.

I wish the modern MMA fans would know Bas Rutten more (and Pancrase too while we're at it). @vernitico
@vernitico 4 жыл бұрын
@Chris Ayala " would have probably been undefeated his whole career if he had ground knowledge from the beginning." He fought Ken while having very little knowledge of ground fighting and Ken was juiced to the max when he fought Bas so Ken had a massive advantage. Also Pancrase wasn't exactly on Bas's side, they taught him wrong defensive techniques against Ken's submission holds, that's why Ken beat Bas with a knee bar so easily in their second fight.

If Bas had a ground game from the beginning, something would've had to compensate. He might not have been as competitive on his feet vs Maurice Smith and Guy Metzger (both kick boxers) for example. Also TK was ahead of Bas in points (effective grappling and octagon control) in their UFC #1 contender's match. After a stalemate (boredom) stand up, Bas seized the last minute opportunity to daze TK, then finish him. Bas may have been ambitious about challenging Frank Shamrock for his middleweight title. Or he may have had doubts about a rematch vs Kevin Randleman at heavyweight, knowing he safely had Frank's number. Bas was truly great but not in my personal GOAT Mt. Rushmore. My picks are: Fedor, Anderson Silva, GSP and Jon Jones.

Bas is an asthmatic. That's an additional angle that you can't appreciate unless you have the disease. Keeping calm, and fighting while your body and soul scream that you are drowning requires extreme mental toughness and the ability to fight through ancient-brain induced panic. Ive been watching MMA for 25 years and Bas Rutten is one of my top 3 favorite fighters. The man was a savage. When watching Bas fight, there is feeling that this man should have been born a 1000 years ago, swinging a war hammer on a foggy blood soaked battlefield. And the way he attacked the liver was artwork. A true pioneer of the sport and he gave so much back to the sport.

I would really like to see a Joe Lewis video. He was such a force and really helped the sport as well as being an amazing human.

hello, it was the best video I have seen of Bas Rutten, thanks for teaching that there are great fighters that not because they are not in MMA detracts from the greatness of their careers. Hopefully one day rescues more great titans who are in "anonymity", especially Pride, K1 and disciplines such as Kyokushin, BBJ, JUDO, etc ..
