Trivia: Basculin was added in the BW dex late due to the region lacking fish Pokemon. This may explain the different forms reminiscent to Shellos and Gastrodon, another Pokemon line that was supposed to be in Gen 3 but couldn’t due to time constraints. Luckily, it’s getting an evolution! Hoping it’ll give it resurgence.

As a long-time competitive Pokemon player who mainly focuses on low tiers, I wanted to have a quick look at the Pokemon you mentioned, just for the hell of it: 1) Bouffalant, Drampa and especially Barbaracle have had solid competitive careers in whatever lower tier they ended up into, gen after gen. None of these guys is ever going to be a world beater, but they're all pretty good for what they are, and can do their job well. 2) Komala and Crabominable are niche Pokemon in their respective lower tiers. Mostly bad, but they excel at doing a very specific thing (Komala being a spinner with U-Turn who is immune to status, and Crabominable being a great Trick Room attacker/AV user), so they see usage by players who need that specific thing. 3) Gogoat and Wormadam have very clear niches, but each of these niches has a laundry list of Pokemon that can be better at it. No matter how far down in the tiers they go, these two are cursed to always find someone who can do their job better than they can. Good in a vacuum, but in the context of actual competitive play they get overshadowed by other things. 4) Mothim is pretty much unredeemable, unless a miracle happens in Legends or whatever. Sorry Mothim :(

Another main thing about Gen 6 was that Floatzel’s speciality was very anti-meta. It had Taunt, Bulk Up, and was immune to burns so it could prevent hazards, protect its own, and set up all day on stuff like Lumineon, Monferno, and Clefairy.

Hello, an PU player here. For a long time, water-types offense was a menace, but was regulated thanks to many water absorbers like Jegglicent, Vaporeon, Toxicroak and Heliorisk. When the tier shift came in, there was some CRAZY power level. Kingler, Clawtizer, Belly Drum Poliwrath to bait Vaporeon, Omastar, at some point even Kingdra was there. So for a lot of time Basculin was overlook. But nowadays, 3 of the 4 pokemon are now on NU, and thus forcing every team to run a Jegglicent wasn´t cool, so thats why Kingler, Claw, Omastar and Kingdra were banned, opening the gates for our boy Basculin. Nowadays for Water offense you got Kabutops, Basculin and Silvally -Maybe Carracosta- o overall Basculin is doing great! GIVE THEM THE PU BADGE THEY DESERVE IT

So glad Basculin is going to get a much needed evolution in Legends Arceus. If Basculegion retains Adaptability or Reckless, and attains a improved speed and attack stats, it can use its already incredible new dual stab and great coverage to Cleve through its opposition. Would be checks like Mandibuzz could not take onslaughts of Liquidation and Head Smashes while potential physical checks like Tangrowth can’t take repeated onslaughts of its ghost stab and ice beam. I’m excited to see the new changes Legends Arceus brings to the series.

Addendum: Basculin did find a niche in USUM ZU, where it was a competent revenge killer even in spite of its competition with Floatzel and Silvally-Water. The SS generation has had much more flux, but it currently sits in SS ZU as a great wallbreaker and revenge killer once more with the removal of Floatzel, and it now wholly outcompetes Silvally-Water in the running for an offensive Water type.

for its evolution I like the idea of leaning into reckless/rock head a bit, Make a move that is like Head Smash but water type and make it a signature move of the Basculin line.
