Joanna Violence's stoppage over Esparza is probably my favorite performance of hers. It was reminiscent of Phil Baroni's KO of Dave Menne: she just kept her opponent pinned up against the cage with a ferocious barrage of punches, despite Carla's legs having already given out as her consciousness left her. Just beautiful striking technique, speed, and accuracy combined with true killer instinct, which felt revolutionary for women's strawweight at the time.

I think this was the perfect time to retire. Despite going 2-5 on paper, there was no slide at the end of her career: 2 of those were razor thin and 1 was to Valentina Shevchenko (who’s the second(?) greatest of all time, a division higher and big for that division). And more importantly, those were some of the greatest fights ever. Sure, she _could_ go on, but what’s the point? This is the perfect way to end a career, especially at 35.

@@SM-nz9ff Joanna didn't really have great grappling, she had outstanding takedown defence and scrambling abilities to avoid getting grappled in the first place. Relying solely on takedown defence is a style that historically can't be relied upon forever.

@@inlimbo6019 You misunderstand. Ronda was TRYING to clinch up with Holly and use her Judo throw, but it wasn't working because Holly knew how to counter it and was too strong. The same thing was true for Amanda as well. When it wasn't working, she got desperate with the striking. And yes Ronda did begin to believe her own hype, but it didn't effect her performances in fights as much as people criticize her for. It just coincided with the fact she was beginning to face bad stylistic matchups. Had she still fought the likes of Miesha Tate, Cat Zingano, Julianna Pena etc. She still would have most likely won. Ronda was a one-trick pony, but she was arguably the best one-trick pony. While her striking was sloppy, she did have power in her strikes which scored her a number of KO/TKO finishes.

I think it isn't fair to blame her for having better time management compared to other fighters. She mentioned numerous times that it doesn't impact her training and never have. It's odd that some of her big fans don't know this. What has impacted her training is her physical inability to sustain it anymore for many years now. She was burned out. This is common for long reigning champions, like GSP, and fighters at the tail end of their athletic careers. She reached that even before the Rose fight. This should be common knowledge based on her many interviews. She is shop worn. None of the opponents she lost to are. Far from it. Rose mentioned that she is at the very top of her athletic career and her cardio is peerless even vs men. Weili mentioned in an interview that she trains up to 6 hours on a normal day virtually every day. Not even in camp. That's almost double Joanna's best day in camp which she could only do a couple of times in a month. Valentina only recently shown being Human at all. Joanna fell off because she physically fell apart and could no longer compete with top female athletes at the apex of their careers while she was on the tail end of hers. Not because she had other interests or bad time management. I think such narratives do Joanna a disservice and suggests a lack of professionalism on her part and you may unknowingly damage her business career should certain individuals see this and think it's coming from a favorable party. It's sad because the reality is the exact opposite of what you said and numerous coaches and others who deal with her echo this.

You're absolutely 100% correct. She's already had a very long career of fighting even before MMA in the first place. It's TONS of mileage. You just can't keep doing that forever and you're bound to burn out. I mean look at Rose, she's 31 now, of similar age that Joanna was when Joanna first started losing, and now look at the performances Rose is putting, clearly not at her peak and is going life and death with Amanda Ribas. And it's not even like Rose has had a career of 100 Muay Thai fights before MMA lol. Joanna's mileage is insane. It's extremely impressive how much she has accomplished after all that wear and tear.

Here's the thing, Joanna took damage in the war with Zhang, but Zhang didn't come out unscathed either and had a year layoff herself and when she did return, she got head kicked and KO'd in the first round, sure she came back well in the Rose rematch but there's too much focus on what the fight did to Joanna and not enough on what it did to Zhang. Sure, Zhang doesn't seem to have been effected as badly but put her in a rematch with Jessica Andrade and I think she's in trouble as the chin isn't the same I think, but back to Joanna.
