Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth. Now Popular does not mean official even though two of the formats I will be covering were official formats being Japan Nintendo Cup and VGC, but it is an indicator of what a good portion of competitive players thought was “optimal” at the time. Also sometimes the Pokemon Battle Historia doesn't provide enough information to talk about certain Pokemon so I add Smogon analysis to make sense of it. This is pretty rare though.
To the people asking why I don't cover Smogon Singles for Gens 1 and 2: It wouldn't really be a history video if I covered those because online Smogon gen 1 meta to my knowledge wasn't actually played until late 2000s. I wanted to cover tournaments/competitive battling that was actually played during the early years of Pokemon (late 90s).
To the people asking why I cover Smogon at all for singles: To my knowledge, Smogon was the most popular format for Gens 3-5 and held a number of tournaments throughout the years. As for Gen 6, I am not covering Battle Spot Singles because there is more information and explanations about sets being used relative to their own meta on Smogon. In other words, there are few written analyses about Battle Spot Pokemon besides the Top tiers and I would like to avoid theorycrafting because it may have a hint of bias (though I theorycraft if I REALLY couldn't find information on a certain Pokemon). The keyword here is explanations. Though I did find statistics of most Pokemon used and most moves used, there wasn't really any explanations on why. Also the few Pokemon I did find analysis of for Top Tier Battle Spot Singles had very similar move sets to the Smogon OU sets anyway.
For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent and I will not fault you for using evasion or whatever, I just like examining popular tournament formats.

Jolteon is, in my opinion, the most consistent eeveelution. As much as I love Umbreon and Espeon, they both fall flatter than Jolteon does. I mean, it's speed stat is so good you don't even need to scarf it. Jolteon's always a solid pick for me.

@extreme odst Espeon is kinda outclassed by other psychic types, and its move pool is just kinda average. Its stats are too. Why would I pick Espeon when I could pick Alakazam, Starmie, or Slowbro? Umbreon is really tanky and I love him to death, but just like Espeon, he's kinda outclassed by other dark types. Jolteon, though, is great for its speed alone. It also has a decent special attack stat. Sure, its movepool isn't the best, but if you need an electric type that can outspeed most things, Jolteon is my go-to.

Jolteon is my favorite eeveelution following by Umbreon and Leafeon. I had a lot of great moments with it and it has a special place in my heart. Even when I played Pokemon Sun it was still a powerhouse and I will always have it on my main team even if it's not as "good" like it used to be.

Just Another Handy among the gen one legendarys they all overperform. Zapdos is a flying type that has a crazy strong special attack and real fast speed and can’t be damaged effectively by electric moves since its electric too. Articuno is an ice type and only has weaknesses to Pokémon it can easily take out because like Zapdos it’s speed is really high. Moltress honestly isn’t all that great too many weaknesses not enough pros. Mewtwo is absurdly stupid strong not a lot can counter him aside from another mewtwo. Legendarys tend to perform on a scale above average no matter how they are played which takes away the need to play with much form of strategy which is honestly why I think they shouldn’t be allowed in competitive tournaments. There’s also the unfairness in using mythical legendarys. Not only are they powerful but few people can get them anymore.

I think its interesting to see, how far a decent attack stat with large speed goes. Many Gen1 Mons fall down over time except for Buffs. But Jolteon held its own quite a long time and if you look at the GBA or similar formats its still deadly asset.

Today they announced the preliminary tier list for Pokémon Sword and Shild and Jolteon is currently in NU😥.Hope it will find a nice place somewhere in the meta. There is no Hidden Power available by now, however it gets Weather Ball as a TM move. So maybe it can be used on a weather teams for extra coverage.

Jolteon was completely outclassed by Raikou in Gen 7 RU and even if it did drop to NU, it’ll still be outclassed, this time by Heliolisk, Togedemaru, and Rotom. Even if it dropped to PU, the fact that Eelektross is one of the best Pokémon in the tier means already Jolteon has competition, but at least it could still have a niche down there. The playerbase finally learned their lesson and let Jolteon drop to PU in Gen 8, but it still has competition in the form of Rotom-Fan, Togedemaru, and the excellent new Morpeko. At least it still has a niche, however.

this video is a really good example of how different early FSG is from modern FSG Jolteon was basically mid-tier OU for the first 4 generations even with Baton Pass, merely existing in the meta instead of being a crucial part of it, being very specific in what teams it can fit on, and pretty much only stayed OU due to popularity and not because of merit. it has only gotten worse in past gens as time goes on and deserved to drop out of OU starting in Gen 5, and is so bad that modern BW players don't even acknowledge its existence on the viability thread. the only tier where it ever achieved A-rank viability is ironically in Gen 6 RU (the first time it fell). such a Pokemon would be treated much harsher in a modern video and be an example of the flaws of the tiering system but achieves endless praise in this video just because it was OU 5/6 times

Jolteon was pretty legit in gen 1 and 3, it's drop being more recent and way past when those generations were the current generation. It was not a top metagame threat, but it was also far from awful either, yes nowadays it's not as good due to shifts in the meta (notably for RBY the absolute game changer that was the Same Type status immunity discovery that indirectly lead to the fall of Exeggutor and a relative increase in Rhydon and the two combined lead to Jolteon being worse off than before) I agree with the sentiment you shared here, but at the same time, for those two gens at least, it's a bit harsh (though for DPP, calling it mid tier OU would be exaggerating how good it was in the tier)

Sperry the god I say this as someone who loves pinsir more than most bug catchers. Pinsir Sucks. It's moveset is almost entirely normal and fighting but it lacks the attack, bulk, or speed to make it work. Aerialate saved Pinsir from Obscurity.
