I’m trying to resolve how you suggest that buying seed from a big box store is bad practice however this particular brand is a supplier for many big box chains possibly including the very store you were walking through at the beginning of the video. What gives?

I just renovated/overseeded my yard. I didn’t want to break the bank, but by the end, I realized, the amount of work I need to do to detach, aerate, water, fertilize etc.... exceeds the value of the seed by a LOT. So the more expensive seed doesn”t change the equation much, but it can save a lot if it grows better and I don’t have to repeat it, or fix bare spots that much. I found elite grass varieties for ridiculously low price at the local landscaper supply store though, so I’m good:)

Now that i have a lawn business and also family there plus the Oregon coast has my soul Ive got to get back there for good! A small point is that Barenbrug is in Tangent, Oregon which is adjacent to Albany. I have lived in the Linn County ORegon for 49 years. More grass seed is grown here than anywhere. I remarked to my wife just yesterday that the grass in the fields has grown like crazy the last two weeks. It is amazing to seed so many fields of plants, the many shades of green, the seeds of which will make lawns all over the world. Thanks for visiting our bit of paradise.

I started a new lawn 7 years ago with RTF water saver, turned out great. thanks to Jos Roozen from Garden Sense radio show. he recommended to not change the top soil bc it will only make for a weaker root system. he said grass seed can grow in poor top soil just like trees can grow in almost solid rock. and he said dont use straw, use a fine mulch/compost to cover the seed.

what is the difference between there two fescue types I live in Maryland and built a house on a farm field no shade. I put a Bermuda soccer field in but wanted a fescue front so i can get nice stripes. what would u recommend which fescue would you mix in the Kentucky blue as well. Getting ready to aerate and over seed thx for all the info I'm hooked.
@pestandlawnginja4 жыл бұрын
Its important to remember that many professional soccer fields are a cool season blend of kentucky bluegrass and perennial rye grass. Tall fescue is an awesome grass but it does not mow shorter than 1.5" well and its a wider blade grass. if you know what you're signing up for the rtf tall fescue is great. I would not suggest mixing it with bluegrass. the bluegrass grows at a slower rate and doesn't match well in my opinion.

Great Video Ginja!! With all the different varieties of grass seed, how does one go about choosing the right one for your lawn?
@pestandlawnginja4 жыл бұрын

I love all your video's, I like it when you go to these places to check out their product. Great info and I'm looking to buy this for my lawn. I don't know that much about lawn care. I'm in central Florida , I have Bahiagrass and it's very drought resistant. I don't have irrigation because I have acreage. I don't see Bahi in their brand . Is there another name for it? And will blue grass make it in the Florida heat without Irrigation?
@pestandlawnginja4 жыл бұрын
Glad you like the videos! Bahiagrass is not included in the barenbrug brand to my knowledge. bahiagrass can be maintained well but its not considered a golf course variety. Not to say that's a bad thing. it's easy to maintain and doesn't require a lot of maintenance.

Great vid and affirmation. Seeded two weeks ago with Barenbrug RPR and Turf Blue (70/30 - coverage not weight) I went with two rounds of Glypho, level some low spots, two weeks fallowing, the a 3rd round of Glypho before seeding. Tenacity and a 3-18-18 at seeding. I already have a new lawn and I’m on the fence about cutting already with a manual reel. Just nervous about hurting the little turf blues, but I got to get them some light, some of the RPR is at 3 inches. Also thinking to put down some Propiconazole as I want to keep up the watering for the turf blues.

great question. for longevity we use an active ingredient called imidicloprid. that'll give 9 to 12 weeks control depending on the rate you put it down.

The term winterize is a marketing term. If you want the grass to stay green longer you need more potassium at the end of the season.

Very informational video. Question. I did a Reno using seed from seed super store (bluegrass mix) I need to kill off and fix a patch, should I stick with the original seed or can I switch “brands” without a noticeable difference? (Will still be sticking with a bluegrass blend)

switching brands could be seemless or it could be a disaster. from differences in texture all the way to the color not matching.

Haven’t ever paid attention to individual companies. Just bought Pennington or Scott’s blends of fescues, ryes, and blue grasses. Prob have 30 varieties in my yard. Everything seems to germinate, thrive, and look great. As long as it’s Oregon I don’t think you can go wrong. Have to give the yellow bag a shot though to see if I notice any difference.

I have a salad bar of old school KBG, PRG, Fine Fescue. It doesn’t look bad but I want to make it look better. You think overseeding will be a good idea or burn it to the ground and start over?
@pestandlawnginja4 жыл бұрын
if you can get the kbg healthy enough it has the potential to take over but can take a few seasons. I've proven this theory at my office. it was full of fine fescue, some rye and tttf. We used my methods on about 4,000 sq ft in a test area and within 2 season it went from 20% bluegrass to being over 70%. is it perfect...... NO. but its way better. if you overseed you'll need to go with the most dominant cool season grass which is kentucky bluegrass.

Maybe I should try this. We had 3 trees removed and grass just won't grow in those areas. What should I be looking at for Northern Illinois?
@pestandlawnginja4 жыл бұрын
I would check the areas. Its possible that the grass won't grow if there's no top soil beneath the surface. I would dig up to 12" and replace the dirt. then I would seed. being in illinois you'll be looking for a tall fescue or a bluegrass blend most likely. tall fescue is a wide blade grass species and bluegrass is thinner and softer.
@ChinaAl4 жыл бұрын
@@pestandlawnginja 12" might be kind of hard because we got buried cables back there as well. I did put a few inches of top- soil though. Next spring I'll see how far down I can go with good topsoil and not the stuff that's there now. Including some wood chips from grinding the stumps. Thanks

I live in the suburbs of Minneapolis. Is there a Kentucky bluegrass you can recommend for my area that resists drought but still stays green?
@pestandlawnginja3 жыл бұрын
Hey Tim. Great question. So the definition drought tolerant isn't what most people think. it just means you can take it to the brink of death and bring it back to life. the timeline is different between the species of how long it can go in drought stress. What I can tell you is grass is 70% water, there are some species that will grow longer roots than others and if you have a lower water table the roots may find water and resulting in you using less water. If you want a green lawn you'll have to water.

I made the mistake of going cheap last fall with my seeds. I purchased the Scotts contractors blend (northeast mix), put down the seed in the fall and in the spring the lawn came out nice and thick but this past summer was hot and humid and not much rain and while I did water regularly, the grass was a disaster. This fall, I purchased seed at Ewing Irrigation, it was tall fescue and the company was Empro King which is sold at Ewing Irrigation and its been 12 days since I did the overseeding and its starting to come in and the areas where it is growing is coming in nicely. Hopefully, this one will do the trick but I plan of over-seeding in the spring time too. Anyway, two questions: 1. Should I put down more seed in a week or two or just wait until the spring. 2. In some areas of my lawn I do have shallow roots but in another area of the lawn it is bentgrass. I used my thatch rake to pull out as much of the bent grass as possible and it comes off like a carpet and there were the tell tale signs where it matted down, then browned out over the summer, and then now its getting green again as the weather cools. I put down tenacity twice at the beginning of August then around the third week of August. Even though I pulled off as much as possible, is there a chance it will come back even with overseeding the area? Also the area where the bentgrass was tends to stay wet for some reason, is there anything to do about that other than the obvious don't water as much? My back is low lying and in the summer tends to hold a ton of humidity.
@pestandlawnginja4 жыл бұрын
1. more seed is highly recommended with fescue. if it doesn't use rtf technology, which I'm pretty sure only barenbrug tall fescue has, it won't spread laterally. 2. There is always a chance the bentgrass will make another appearance. I would use tenacity next season after your new grass seed is well established. add triclypyr ester to the tenacity mix. that will help out a lot. As for the watering issue, its commonly a lower spot and I have since been recommended people use a combo of dirt and sand to raise the soil levels to help with that.
@steviem52794 жыл бұрын
@@pestandlawnginja The bentgrass is so frustrating because it looks fine at the beginning of the season, then as it grows it mats down and you don't realize it until you start raking the area and the grass when it stands up is like 6 inches tall but you go and cut it and it just falls down again. Then it holds that moisture in and you see the brown roots and its almost slimey. Then it all browns out or stays green but when you pull on it or use a thatch rake, it lifts like a carpet, its frustrating. A gardener at the garden supply store told me to do the pull test and around the bent grass and then keep moving over until you get to the established grass, once there, dig a small area just to make sure its not grubs because they will move to new areas once they've eaten the roots of the area they destroyed. he said to do that just to make sure its not grubs and it is bentgrass and I did just that and there were not grubs where the better grass was. The unfortunate part for me is my backyard is low lying and all the neighbors have fences so the humidity tends to linger in the back and there is a strip about 3 feet wide that extends about 30 or 40 feet between my house and the neighbors and along his fence line that holds in moisture which the bentgrass seems to love. Anyway, what I'll do is allow the seed that I already planted take, and its starting to come up after 12 days and next week I will put down some more seed as the weather starts cooling off. BTW, the tenacity is interesting as you don't see the results right away, it takes time and next thing you know some of the weeds are gone.

Hi, I follow your videos all the time. I live in Saratoga Springs Ny and I am going go oversees soon. I am not sure which grass seed should I use. My lawn has some extremely full sun areas and some dense shade… I was thinking about the RTF from Barenbrug, will that work?
@pestandlawnginja3 жыл бұрын
rtf is a good choice for you. its a wider blade grass and has great color. most cool season grass need 6 hours direct sunlight. so if you have heavy shade areas fine fescues are commonly the best choice but even they need 3 to 4 hours direct sunlight per day. if that's not in the cards your better off either thinning out the trees / bushes or hard scaping those areas.

Ginja, we are moving to a new home and are thinking of overseeding with the Barenbrug RTF tall fescue. Any insight into disease resistance to brown patch and whether the rhizome claims are legit? Combining it with the Turf Blue Pro.
@pestandlawnginja3 жыл бұрын
The RTF is what it is marketed as. I don't have first hand knowledge on brown patch but it does amazingly well against melting out and leaf spot. I believe the info your looking for is on ntep.org . The color is great and it does spread laterally. I personally wouldn't mix it with turf blue pro. they grow at different rates and the rtf is darker than the blue.
