The first tip about making sure your driving angle isnt too tight when attacking the hip is something ive neem noticing about my drives, at 20 i was blowng by defenders, even when they were able to stay with me, the tighter angle meant i had to really power through my drive to get the defenders off me as my drive was usually smothered all the way to the rim, at 35 i definitely need a wider angle because who needs to put in extra work for no reason. Great tip

I am very big about using tight angles and not just sprinting past for a layup. Closing the gap has prevented defenders from getting in front and cutting off my angle. However, I also thought about quick movements if you play off the ball and attack immediately off the catch without wasted movement to shift defenders out of the way. This is a recipe for disaster as a defender if you're chasing a guy to his spot and he immediately catches the ball and either wips through to blow by or goes hard to a spot and stops on the dime with a step back or sharp change of direction pull back. What do you think about this concept? As a defender you're at a disadvantage because you're trying to recover and can't. With my experience of closing the gap, it's important to attack the palm because an aggressive defender will ride and bump you if you try to go through him too much. Attacking the palm means going through his hand and then closing the gap so you can remain explosive while shortening his stride. Some coaches teach pinning the defender's arm down to keep him out of the play, but that only works if you're stronger or great at getting leverage over your defender.
@admirenyamhanga914114 күн бұрын
The problem with this video is it only really works if the players are spaced out because you can go to work but in Australia 3 people will be interested in the ball so entering the paint is hell for a layup

I would also like to know when is the best time to Drive, Attacking defender's top foot and Bottom ( back ) foot ?
@BBallFilmZone4 ай бұрын
@@BoubacarDiallo-sx8cu I think you’re best off picking the foot based off the second line of defense and where you have driving lanes, where you have shooters, and what spacing looks like. That should be the first priority. But assuming both ways (left and right, top and bottom) are equally beneficial drives given the second line, then I would say to pick top foot most of the time. The advantage you get when you attack the top foot and your defender has to turn their body is very significant and you should use it as much as possible.

Do you still follow the palms rule when the defender forces you to one side?
@BBallFilmZone4 ай бұрын
It’s not important at that point. The point of attacking the palm is to make sure your angle isn’t too tight. If you attack the bottom foot and your angle is tight that’s not a big deal and actually can be a good thing. If you attack the top foot you just need to make sure you get across it. Attacking the palm on the top foot may make it easier for your defender to slide and cut you off actually.

That’s where you’re trying to get outside of their hips. If you drive at their hand, just outside of their frame, without being cut off then you’ll be past them. If they’re quick enough to cut you off when you drive at their hand then bounce back to quickly reset. This is where you can either try to get yourself outside of their hips, or shift their hips out of your way so you can get by. It all comes back to getting outside of their frame and taking advantage of it so they can’t slide and beat you to the spot.

@BBallFilmZoneАй бұрын
For crossovers, a lot of players let the ball swing outside their frame after the dribble so that when someone tries to poke it they hit your chest and not the ball. Some players strictly use push crosses to avoid getting poked also. For countering, a general tip can just be to counter earlier. If you counter right before a cut off then it’s harder for them to steal. But every counter is going to be different in terms of ball protection so I’ll talk abt that in a vid at some point.

Do you mean use your off hand swipe when u said attack the palms
@BBallFilmZone2 ай бұрын
Attack the palms means drive at the hands. Drive at the area outside of their hips so that it’s a longer stride for them to cut you off when they slide. You can swipe w/ off arm but that gets you jammed against a good defender. So keeping/getting your off arm in front can be better unless you really blow by then swiping works.

You still need to practice the forearm thing. You will meet bigger, faster and more athletic defender. Sometime out of a switch. You will meet trap and double. Also it's not just about iso and scoring. Sometime the play needs you to collapse the defense with a drive which restrict the number of counter and drible you can use. Creating a frame with your forearm is not pushing with your forarm.

Do you have any drills/does anyone have any drills to help implement these concepts?
@BBallFilmZone4 ай бұрын
Blind 1v1 Defense is at the top of the key facing the rim. Offense puts the ball on the defense’s back. When the offense takes the ball off the defense’s back its live. Offense has to score in the paint. Angle 1v1 or 1v2 Offense starts in a split stance on the wing, facing towards the rim. Defense starts with torso facing the offensive player. Drill is live when the offense’s feet move. If you have a third person you can put them on the opposite block as help defense, they can only leave when the offense’s feet move. Lane 1v1 Normal 1v1 but you have to stay inside the lane lines. Work on shifting defender, taking tight angles, taking tight change of direction angles. These are what I have off the top of my head. Focus on adjusting your angle, changing directions at the right time, etc. After each play, think abt how you could’ve done better/what you did well. You can even record it and watch later.

Yes. If they are close enough that they can block you then getting in front and closing the space is best. If you rlly dust them and they’re so far behind they won’t be able to block it then it doesn’t matter.
@DavidHall-zo8egАй бұрын
To piggyback off of bballfilmzone, yes. When you get by a defender, you want to get your body in front. I like to crowd my defender's airspace when I get in front so that he can't catch up and take away my angle. Most guys like to go wide where they see open space after getting past defenders , which can set you up for a chase down block by taller defenders. Most people like to initiate contact with their off arm swipe and then physically put a body on that defender where he can't move his body, but that only usually works if you're stronger than the defender. If you're smaller you want to initiate contact first like that to quickly get your body directly in front. Think of using contact to get a burst of speed to get past him and center your body with his without continuing to try and physically jam him up. That will allow him to overpower you if he's stronger. If you do need a last second bump such as a veer step, make sure you don't slow down to get the contact. Stay explosive when hitting. The 3:48 mark where he shows Kawhi Leonard, Kyrie, and Kemba Walker using the off arm to get themselves in front and close the gap is a great example of what I am saying. Also have your off arm over top the defender's arm, but don't telegraph it. Also view the 5:47 mark with Kemba Walker to see what I am saying. And watch the clip of the white guy in the 1 on 1 challenge around the 5:53 mark. Study that clip.
@DavidHall-zo8egАй бұрын
But If you are so far ahead when you blow by, it won't matter. I'm just saying use that when playing taller, longer, stronger, athletic guys to take away their physical/genetic advantages.

2:44 takes top foot then closes the space between himself and the defender on the next dribble. 2:49 takes top foot then doesn’t close off the space between himself and defender on the next dribble. Then 2:53 is correct because Beal closes off space on next dribble. Closing off the space on your next dribble puts you in control. The Haliburton one was just a softer angle into a light sidestep after the flip, which doesn’t take advantage of his position after flipping the defender.
