Three Dog Night is a great rock band from the 60's-70's. This band had a lot of energy. They had 3 guys with great voices that could all sing lead vocals. Some of their hits are "Mama Told Me Not To Come", "One" (written by Harry Nilsson), "Just An Old Fashioned Love Song", "Shambala", "Try A Little Tenderness", "Eli's Coming", "The Show Must Go On", "Joy To The World" etc.

One of the great bands of my youth. They had 21 Top 40 hits, 11 Top 10 hits and 3 Number One hits. Their music was always played at every party because it's happy and fun and great to sing along with. Saw them in concert in Indy in 2023. They're still out there writing new music and put on a great show.

Clothes are not just about style. It was a huge deal to wear long hair and beards in the 60s and 70s. It was a reaction to the narrow, stuffy norms of the dominant culture. It sent both the message of we are not you and we're cool to like-minded people.

This was one of my brother's favorite songs. He's about a decade older than me and was stunned I hadn't even heard of Three Dog Night. None of my other siblings were really into older music, while my parents were more into classic country. He pulled out a cassette tape of them, and I loved it right away. Years later, my high school marching band played "Joy to the World," a song everyone knew from the radio but no one knew the name. Our cheerleaders loved the song and had a whole dance routine to it. At football games they would shout to the band, "Play Jeremiah!" We did, because the parents in the audience loved it so much and we got our biggest cheers.

Two other groups you would love, who exemplify the sound of the 60s/70s, are Chicago and Blood Sweat and Tears (BST). Both featured horn sections that really compliment the music score.

Of all the concerts I went to in the late 60s/early 70s, Three Dog Night were the best ever, bar none. They were great entertainers. There are lots of great songs by them, many were covers of songs that weren't so successful, and they made them shine. You'll find some great music if you investigate this band. Long hair in the 1960's was an act of rebellion. (As described in the song 'Hair".) It got negative response where needed to be a rock or pop star. (Plus most people got the records or listened to the radio so never saw them.) The funniest song I have heard about this is "Pop Hates the Beatles" by Allan Sherman, a song from a parent's point of view. The song I recall hearing for the first time as a child is "Joy To The World".

The 1975 Soundstage live performance has several standouts. I love Cory's soulful voice (Cory Wells is singing lead here) on Try a little Tenderness. The other standout from this performance, for me, is Eli's Coming. Chuck Negron is the super tall guy on stage right. He sang their biggest hit, "Joy to the World". I am positive you've heard this song but you just didn't know who sang it. It's not my favorite of theirs, but it is very well known. The three singers (Cory, Chuck, and Danny Hutton (stage left here)) are each lead singers. They each sing lead on different songs. Cory and Chuck had more hits than Danny. They had many, many hits over the course of about 6 years, before they broke up.
