Axton's most lasting contributions were songs made famous by others: "Joy to the World" (Three Dog Night) and "Never Been to Spain" (Three Dog Night, Elvis Presley); "Greenback Dollar" (the Kingston Trio); "The Pusher" and "Snowblind Friend" (Steppenwolf); "No No Song" (Ringo Starr); and an array of others, covered by singers such as Joan Baez, Arlo Guthrie, John Denver, Waylon Jennings, Jonathan Edwards, Glen Campbell and Anne Murray. Axton also sang a couple of duets with Linda Ronstadt, including "Lion in the Winter" and "When the Morning Comes" (a top 40 country hit). His composition "Joy to the World", as performed by Three Dog Night, was No. 1 on the charts for six straight weeks in 1971, making it the top hit of the year. He named his record label Jeremiah after the bullfrog mentioned in the song.[2]

In "Greenback Dollar" he talks about his mother telling him to "sing what must be song", and when you consider that his mother co-wrote "Heartbreak Hotel" for Elvis, it makes it all the more impactful in how much those words must have meant to him as a child. @@robertacolarette1594 Negron had the high tenor. Wells was the bluesy, soulful baritone. Danny Hutton had a gruffer baritone that rested higher than Wells'. Thus far, A&A have reacted to three Three Dog Night songs on which Wells sang lead, and one ("Joy to the World") on which Negron sang lead. If they want to hear Hutton's voice spotlighted, they should listen to "Liar" or "Black and White" (both big hits), or TDN's cover version of Elton John's "Your Song". The vocals build because they have three lead singers and keep adding people. Next, "Eli's Coming" or "One." Both bangers. Produced by the brilliant Richard Podolor, who I tried to connect with you. Unfortunately, he was ill and passed away last year. One of the best producers of the era out there. If you want to hear a song that'll remind you vocally of Three Dog Night, try The Grass Roots' "Someone to Love" from their excellent MOVE ALONG album, on which they wrote a lot of the songs.
