Cavill seems to be a considerate rider, which makes me wonder about that statement re arms. Battle riding is basically dressage - the Lippizaner horses were expertly trained over years to be able to respond to the rider's smallest command, and could kick another rider out of his saddle, and move in any direction, sideways, forwards, or backwards - as needed. You don't use your arms to forcibly control a horse, movements of the horse are transmitted through your legs, body weight, muscular signals to the horse. The reins are used for guidance, not control. If you haul on the horse's mouth, you're going to damage and ruin his mouth, turn it into what is known as a "hard mouth", ie has lost its sensitivity and ability to respond to the rider's "ask". Gentlemen riders of medieval times knew this, a good rider was known by his "good hands", ie soft and responsive hands, never hauling on a horse's mouth. Movies have ruined that, because they went after the hamfisted perception that it's just cool to see a horse's mouth painfully hauled open by the rider wrenching the reins, and forcing his mouth open. In reality, that does not work. Watch the Lippizzaners.
