As an academic and professor, I am fascinated by how people choose to annotate the books they're reading for fun! And as specifically an English professor, I'm super happy to see people reading for fun at all. I took a survey of my students a few years ago and found out that none of them had read a single book for fun since they were 8-10 years old. I never took that survey again; my heart can't take it!

It seems like reading for fun is becoming more popular for people in their teenage/later years, I was a massive bookworm up until I was about nine or ten and now at 14 I’m after getting back into it, I’m currently reading Crime and Punishmemt by Fyodor Dostoevsky and No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai :) as-well as that I’ planning to read War and Peace, Pride and Prejudice, And The picture of Dorian Gray, much to the joy of my mother who’s a massive fan of reading and especially Oscar Wilde considering we’re Irish.

I am so judgemental of myself when I annotate lol. I question everything and I'm like did I really need to annotate that? But when I look back through it later I feel like I appreciate the annotations more. It shows what I was feeling and thinking during the experience I had reading the book, and almost helps me to relive it!!

Im going to try annotating. I think it will help me engage with the book more. My problem when reading is that once I've finished a book I pretty much forget everything about it. I hate it. Like if you asked me about all the books I've ever read I don't think I'd even be able to give you a brief summary of it. My memory is just awful at taking in information and letting it sink in.

SAME i hate that. What I’ve done that has helped me has been reading slowly and basically taking my time with it. I can actually read pretty fast but in doing so I wouldn’t retain most of the information that I’ve read. I’ve just accepted that my memory isn’t very good and that’s okay lol. I actually would like to annotate but the thought of writing on my book scares me. Like I’m the type of person that dies on the inside when people fold the corner of a page lol.
@ivy28053 жыл бұрын
yesss i feel like while i’m reading i don’t process what’s going on so i forget what happened earlier in the book
@demerion3 жыл бұрын
Same here. I kinda just accepted that I won't retain a lot of information, so I just try to keep an overview of what happened. Sometimes it's very superficial, like "They went to X, but there was a monster so they fought it, then they found a chest with a ring" when in the book the fighting scene takes two pages. But that's usually enough to follow the story. If I'm really into the story, I naturally keep more information. I still have problems remembering what happened after I finished the book, so maybe I'll start to keep notes. Like Andrea, I don't like writing in books, mainly because it looks awful if I do it. If it looked like in the video, I would probably do it. For that reason, I might try post-it notes (or an external note). And depending on the book I'll write down less or more. I learn by writing down, so this hopefully keeps information in my head longer. But I probably still have to come back every so often to refresh my memory. :/

If anyone does this with my books, I consider it to be an honour. You're supposed to be in an argument or discussion. It's a 2-way communication with the author." Hope that helps. :)

The part about not worrying about whether something "should be" annotated helped me so much. I always feel like I'm over underlining or putting too many tabs especially when I put more than one on 1 page, like maybe the top had a really shocking moment I want to come back to but the bottom had a part I SUPER liked, so I'll have 2 tabs there and I always question whether I should have put them both or just the one, but who cares? It's how I wanna do it so I gotta stop worrying. ^_^ Thanks for the video, really was a good watch and informational.

I find it really interesting how people annotate their books. I don't do it myself (a rare post-it note in a book series but that's it). What I do like to do is add the month and year that I bought the book at the front pages. Or if I bought it somewhere special (ex. abroad) or was gifted it I'll add that to. Sometimes very confronting. Right now I'm reading a book I bought at a con in july 2014... welp

I’m kind of annoying about sticky tabs because it bothers me if they don’t all look the same 😂 It always has to line up with the first line in the sentence and it has to stick out like 0.4 cm exactly. I use a ruler as a bookmark so I can use it to underline and to line up my tabs. My colors: Pink: love (romance + friendship and family) Orange: quotes/scenes I like Yellow: shocking moments Green: important character/world info Blue: sad moments or things I don’t like

I feel like this video got me out of my physical reading slump, suddenly I want to go and read and annotate my books so bad lol. Well, I wanted to say that you were one of the persons that inspired me to start annotating my books (actually I watched your first annotating video wow its been so long) and I love doing it and yeah I completely agree with every reason you mentioned when it comes to why you like annotating your books!!! And PLEASE daiso needs to sell colours separately I have like 32647 packs that have all the colours except orange (which is the one I use for the moments I love) and it frustrates me. What I try to do is to use the colours that I use less for poetry/nonfiction. If you decide to get more into highlighting, (probably you know this already but just in case) but personally for highlighting I prefer using the stablio pastel highlighters which look way more aesthetically pleasing than regular highlighters. And finally, does it ever happened to you that when you're annotating and you come across a moment that you love but it is also a sad moment so you don't know which colour to use or is it just me lol
@naturallyjasauni84463 жыл бұрын

I would highly recommend the Zebra midliners for highlighting books as some of the packs are not as fluorescent as highlighters so they are not as in your face when you go back and read through the book, and they have very minimal bleed through. Another pack i would recommend is the javapen power lines as they are not as expensive as the midliners and comes with both pastel and fluorescent colours so you can pick and choose. :) I also use a ruler when highlighting as I also like straight lines in my book. xx

Post it sells dual colour packs (and single colour and I believe pink is one of the colours they sell that way I believe). I really like the Post-it tabs, same as with yours they don't really lift all the ink of the page and how much they lift depends on how long the tab has been there mostly. And I did try writing thoughts in my books and underlining, didn't really like it. I don't really tab often enough to have a set meaning for each colour so I tend to create a legend in the book and give the colours a meaning as I go along.
@ammalyrical56464 жыл бұрын
Those tabs (or most of them) also have the benefit that only the end that sticks out has the colour. Which is something I want when I'm using tabs for anything (I use them for textbooks as well or to remember I need to do something with the tabbed item since bright colours do attract attention).

I love annotating but I am so afraid of doing so with my hardbacks and my visually pretty books (if that makes sense). I started annotating the books that I teach to my students. I found that separating novels that I read for fun, the ones that are in my personal library, and then the books I teach are on their own. This helped me enjoy annotating while also keeping my books pristine which is all thanks to booktok and youtubers scaring me into keeping my books perfect. Maybe one day I will decide to move forth and write in my YA and NA hardbacks.

You inspired me to start annotating my books. I’m still extremely picky about what I annotate, but when I do annotate, I enjoy myself so much. When I first started to annotate, I couldn’t deal with the idea of running out of a certain colour faster, so because of that, I switch things up every time I annotate a book. I use different colours every time and put a key in the front of the book. Another reason I do this is because I didn’t want to always associate blue with sad and pink with love. Doing this also allows me to use as many colours as I like and I will often use a colour to annotate a specific theme in the book. For example I had a colour for Mormon specific information for Autoboyography by Christina Lauren and colours for Asian/Vietnamese specific info and autism specific info when I annotated The Kiss Quotient. As a result of using extra colours, though, I had to ditch tabs and I now use book darts.

I couldn't relate more with the idea of annotating books to make them yours! I love reading a book and changing them as much as they change me.

I only do poetry and I just pick a color to match the poetry book. I also barely have the tabs peaking out.

This was very helpful! I always second guess myself about if something is REALLY worth annotating/highlighting etc and before I know it I'm 100+ pages into a book with not a single annotation. I need to be less judgmental. It's not like anyone else will see it unless I want them to, and I won't be graded on it.
