The track "Hilberts Plane" in Trackmania is a special one. Three hours of intense balancing on a pipe, and if you fall off you are forced to start all the way from the beginning again. Recently on my stream, I set out to be the first person to complete this track!

Since you'll need checkpoints at the end of every layer to prevent skipping, just go the extra mile and add a lap system with a long ramp at the bottom layer. And with the fog I don't get why there weren't longer straights to either make people misjudge for how long they can go faster or constantly feel like they could go faster but it would be too risky as the longer straights would have to be differently long each, adding an extra layer of stress. There's still a lot of horrid potential left.

Hilbert's plane is actually a 100+ year old problem in geometry that deals with space-filling curves. In theory, the infinitieth iteration of the Hilbert's curve would be a space filled completely by a curve of zero width. For me, even though I don't really understand it, it is mindblowing. And I am pleasantly surprised to find references to it in a video game

@@asj3419 that shit is so insane. Studied a lot of math at uni, following that entire thought trail of how we've managed to deal with infinities is a crazy ride. It's such a rich concept, but it's so easy to just say nonsense. The fact that we can use it all the time (i mean you always integrate to infinity right? 😂) Without hesitation tells us how clearly we believe we understand it.

Fun fact: The reason you get the Call of the Void, is, most likely, bacause it is one of the best ways to get you to really think about the dangers of the activity you're doing, and that makes you want to stop doing said dangerous activity, lowering the chance of the Call of the Void scenario accidentally becoming real, and subsequently, you dying.

That feeling when a word stops making sense is called "semantic satiation". It's quite a strange feeling when you're programming something for several hours, perhaps a class named "World", then all of a sudden the word "world" seems like meaningless sounds with no meaning.
@musaran2
@musaran2 2 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, it is quite the surreal experience to lose the meaning of something you know, and still *know* you know. Top athletes have a similar phenomenon, where they lose control of a move they do too much. Archers in particular, due to the mix of mental and muscle focus? It appear to be neuron fatigue from too much use. The more general form is "reactive inhibition".

This is not fully correct. Yes if you drive with one wheel on one surface and with another on another surface, it will only use one of the wheels to check on which surface you are driving, likely because the game does not know how to handle you driving on two different surfaces. Oh about those scary thoughts: They’re called intrusive thoughts. Usually they’re actually a survival mechanism so your brain is able to better conceptualise what to do and what to definitely avoid. Like when you think “what if I throw this baby on the floor” while holding your kid, it’s actually your brain telling you indirectly to never ever do that because the intrusive thought gives you that feeling of anxiety which makes you wanna avoid that action all together :)

This seems much easier than the other. You don't have to worry about keeping balance since it's flat and you don't have to memorize the track. So the main obstacles are turning and the length of the track.
@kylethekidable

This would be far harder for most because of the monotony. Your focus tends to dip dramatically as time goes on repeating the same mundane task over and over, but it's also meticulous enough that you can't zone out and just get it done. The other one has variation in the track and one correct path among many so as little as it seems, that mental stimulation will keep you focusing. Further, the straight aways aren't too bad even on the rounded pipe but the rounding definitely makes turns more forgiving, whereas there is tiny margin for error on these turns.

The concept he's discussing around (7:40) is called "call of the void" and it's actually healthy. By forcing yourself to reject thoughts of driving off the road, it reaffirms in your mind that you are chosing to be on the road, and makes you safer. It reminds you to not jump off that cliff, and not drive into the other lane, by bringing them to mind for you to refuse.

Your comment about left and right turns feeling different reminds me of when I was learning how to solve rubiks cubes. There's one sequence of movements that you do a certain way if you want to move a block one way, and you mirror the moves to make it move the other way, so to move the block right, you turn the top left, and to move the block left, you turn the top right. I got the hang of the sequence to move the block right really quickly, but every time I tries moving it left, I kept messing up. Even now, I'm a lot slower moving left than moving right.

“Fun” fact; Hilbert’s plane is a reference to Hilbert spaces, a very important mathematical concept. They are “complete”, in the sense that every (Cauchy) sequence in the space converges within said space. The “completeness” of the space is conveyed by the fact that all available space was utilized when building this track, making it “complete” in a sense :p

7:30 I see the prompt defining that feeling as "call of the void". That's 100% accurate when it comes to heights. I thought I'd share this... A related word is _cacoethes_ : an irresistible urge to do something inadvisable. This is not only broader in that it's not just restricted to a person & heights, it also means to person _can't resist_ the urge.

10:05 That happens to me too. Any left turn is harder then a right turn, i think its natural cause the 2nd finger is a lot stronger and better than the fourth, so it can execute more precise inputs. I remember when i was playing summer 2021 23. I had to turn left to get a good line, but i would overturn and fly out of the water, but when i turned right, it was easy to tap the button with the second finger just for a moment.

About the left-right turn thingy, it's because the brain registers them differently and each person is more comfortable with turns towards one of the two directions, that applies to driving both in games and real life and to everything really, the brain favors one side over the other, just try leaning down to drink water from a tap for example, you'll notice that you always lean in a specific way (eg: lean to the left with the right side of your head being closer to the tap) and if you lean the opposite way it's very uncomfortable and weird. For driving specifically, it's further affected depending on if you drive outside of games often, since whether your country has the lanes on the left or right also affects directional perception like that.
