Huge congratulations! Getting the whole thing done while in high school is amazing. I see a future airline pilot in the making. I soloed before I could drive a car. I started my flying lessons at age 16, funded by freelance lawn mowing. Because my high school drivers education was over filled, I did not get a driver's license for a car until I was 17 (almost 18). As a result, I rode my bicyle 4.5 miles each way to the local airport (2600 ft runway). So I was in a very stange situation where I bicycled to and from the airport, was able to fly solo in a Cessna 150, but couldn't drive a car. The guys at the FBO used to just laugh about the whole thing, and knew that I had to rest and cool off before flying on a hot summer's day. Since my income to take flying lessons depended upon the grass growing, I could only do so 6 months of the year. I got my PPL 2 years after I started lessons at age 18, and by that time I was able to drive a car to the airport. That was way back in the 1970's. I don't think cutting one's shirt after soloing was a widespread tradition back then, but it should have been.

Congratulations! I just passed my own Private Pilot Checkride yesterday. It took me 3 years, but I'm over the moon excited. Enjoy your flying career!

Very happy for you Sarah. I also got my private license at 17 more than 50 years ago. I also worked at the airport washing planes. :)

You and I are literally living the same life! I’m also a 17 year old private pilot as of January 25th! I started flying when I was 15 and also got a scholarship from the same Ray Foundation. Congrats with what you’ve achieved so far and best of luck to you on our insanely similar path!

Good for you. There is a girl at my local school who was also 17 when she got her PPL. She then got her IR, Com, CFI, and just got her CFII a few days ago. She is now 19. I'm glad to see young people with an actual passion for flying.

Nice I’ve just turned 17 this year I started training at 16 got my first discovery flight when I was 15 and I have my check ride in February

Keep up the good work young lady. I love seeing the enthusiasm. My oldest niece (28) is living with me while she is flight instructing thanks to growing up flying with me and my 16 year old niece (who lives down the street) just had her first PPL lesson. Both wanting to be airline pilots. I am having a great time helping them go through their experiences. Blue skies!!!

Great job!!!! Your excitement about flying is wonderful and the fact that you started at such a young age is fabulous!!!! I owned N35411 for a couple years about 20 years ago. It is good to see that she is still being flown and that you are so excited about that plane. I really enjoyed flying it for the couple years I owned it.

Congratulations Sarah on getting your Private Pilots license!! That is awesome!!! Really enjoy your videos. I also enjoy the pics/videos of 35411. I used to own her and really missed having her to fly. But that was around 20 years ago when i got my private and was flying.

I've looked at taking lessons a few times over the years, but the cost is a killer. Your idea for finding a local EAA chapter is really good and I hadn't even considered scholarships. I have something to research now.

Great job you and your parents have a lot to be proud of! My dad was a career fighter pilot and now that I'm near retirement age I find myself wanting to get licensed as well. Your passion for all things aviation shines bright! Brava!

What are some of the requirements to get a scholarship?

In my experience it really depends on the scholarship, some can require previous flight time and some don’t. One thing I have seen though is that they want to make sure you are going to put in your best effort in training!
