I’m 25 and was captain on the 737. Before that I upgraded to captain on the saab 340 at 23. And began as a first officer at 21. I Recently began as first officer at a major US airline.. it’s great to see more of us younger guys and gals succeeding. While most where out partying or enjoying their teens, we where studying and oriented to what we wanted to do, which was fly. To anyone that thinks your too young to start, don’t, Begin flying as soon as you know it’s what you want to do! Blue skies brother, much love from the states.

Very inspiring video young man. I wanted to be a commercial pilot since I was 11. I flew to Canada in the cockpit of a Lockheed Tristar the entire way! I had my PPL at 19 and was well on my way to reaching my dream. Sadly money became a huge issue and then life got in the way. I’m 50 years old and missed my window. I wish all those trying to become a pilot as a profession the very best. It’s a lot of work and a lot of money, but with determination and a little luck you can make it.

I have been interested in aviation for a while, and one of my friends always questioned why I never outright said I wanted to be a pilot. My main reason being that I know it is a lot of effort, and costs a lot, and I have never been too sure on where to start. I don't have an exact career path, but just have an interest in computers and aviation, and could go either way, but a job within IT has been the more realistic goal. This video has inspired me to pursue more aviation based careers, even if it just helps me become a private pilot.

I’m currently studying for my PPL, with about 17 hours total time so far, and I’m starting at a university flight program this fall, where I will get all my ratings through commercial over the next years. Growing up, and traveling to Europe from the USA every year or so, I always had a fascination with airplanes, and knew I wanted to be a pilot from about the age of twelve, so that I can fly big jets and see amazing places around the world.

ive always wanted to be a pilot for as long as i can remember too. ive just completed my a levels and am waiting for my results. decided i wanted to go down the atpl degree courses, and L3 Harris is currently the main flight school im considering. The RAF was something i considered at one point, but after not much time and seeing that 30 people out of almost 3000 applicants each year get accepted, i put that idea to bed. I'm very close to being at the point of making a deposit for the training and have just been for my class 1 medical. decided to hold off until january to keep working at dominos for now to have more money saved to live off. although im holding off im working on getting my PPL with a local flight school. cant wait until january to get started working towards what i ultimately want to be doing, rather than making pizzas. few questions, was L3 Harris a flight school you considered? so far im very impressed by them. and when you're in flight school, especially in the initial part of the training with your ground school, did you get a little part time job doing like 10 hours a week just to give you a bit extra to live off, or is that taking up too much time, or did covid get in the way of this happening? and did you do dual license with the uk caa and easa or did you just do one?

Did my exams during covid too, all 14 of them, for the most part it was okay doing it via zoom meetings however subjects like flight planning and performance we a bit troublesome especially when the CRP5 was involved. For exams I failed a few but I wasn't taking them too seriously at the start and so it took a year and 4 months. By the end I was passing with 90%+ in the exams even doing Rnav, AGK and instruments in 12 minutes, 8 minutes and 6 minutes respectively. You learn a lot about yourself when doing the exams, the highs and lows and the strugglebus. Now I'm in Ireland finishing the flying portion but I have only a year left validity on the exams. It was great to see how many different people were doing the exams and how people helped eachother during the studying. I was one of the youngest in the class at the time being 21 when starting the exams, the oldest we had I believer was a 65 year old.

Love your videos, since the time i came across them on youtube i knew this is guy is me, im 19 since recently and from Portugal ( no air cadets here, would have loved for that to exist here ), i already did 8 exams with the authority and despite not having such a good average as yours of 93% and having failed HPL with 74 so not all first time passes on all, Im one of the best in my class and im satisfied with my exams, your channel is a inspiration for me because i feel your journey is so similar to the one im started recently, and all other aspiring pilots as well. During the video you kept saying 2023 i would assume you meant 2022 cause November 2023 is still a little bit in the future. Still loved the video and was definitely hopping for one just like this since i saw the post on Instagram. One question i have is regarding flight hours, do airlines ask for a lot of them? Cause for example my ATO just gives 180 hours.

I'm 4 days away from first day of school, and i'm kinda nervous for the next couple years, mainly about the theory bit. I passed all tests easily up to this point, but i was a mid tier student in normal school (usually D, C, student, did have a few Bs), didn't have any advanced math or physics which i did pass in the admission tests, however i'm a bit nervous that the actual education will be a lot harder than the admission tests and that i might fail later on. I'm prepared to study a lot and prioritize school over anything else the next two years, so i hope that's enough and that the actuall school doesn't turn out to be too hard. The pilots i have spoken to are a bit 50/50 on wether it's difficult or not, so i'm kinda blind going into this. All i can do is wait and see. It's either gonna go great or be the most expensive mistake of my life lol

I'm currently studying for my ATPL in an integrated course in Sweden and just completed my first 6 subjects all in one sitting which I'm very proud of and now I've started my flying and I'm absolutely loving it. I'm currently 20 yo and I should be done before the end of next year and I'm hoping (since my flight school has a couple of partners) to be hired as soon as I finish my training. If everything goes as expected I should also be an airline pilot at 21 hahah

Very inspiring and useful thanks for the great video. I have just finished my a levels and am looking to join an integrated course in the next few months. Would you reccomend delaying the start of training to get some experience working in the industry first like you spoke about in the video or just going for the training straight away? Thanks for all the great info!
@PilotOli

I think it really depends the light experience you have already. If you feel all you’ve done is school, then maybe it’s a good idea just to take 6 months and do something like cabin crew. But if you’re got other experience whilst you’ve been at school, you should be great

Hi! Thanks for sharing this, its really inspiring. I'm currently 17 in the US, and I feel like what you said at 4:56 is quite literally what i'm thinking right now. While all my friends are thinking about universities, I want to do flight school, which is just as expensive. Going to Uni and a flight school would be so much more expensive, and money isn't something my family has. But i've also seen online that having a degree is what you should really do, as a bounce back in case being a pilot doesn't work out for any reason, and also the fact that airlines tend to prefer people with degrees (I'm guessing your work experience helped out alot) Now i'm just stuck contemplating about what I should do while juggling a ton of homework lol. What do you think? Should I just take a leap of faith and devote my life to being a pilot like you did? Thanks.

In the UK, I was able to do a degree at the same time as my flight training. It’s included in the cost of the course. Anything like that on the US?

Congrats matey for fulfilling a dream of mine. My parents were willing to remortgage their house to put me through training. I had flying lessons from age 12-16; in C150s amd the 170 and PA28 as a treat (they would cost an extra 40 quid an hour to have lessons in) at 16 my parents became bankrupt but also just prior to that found out that my eyesight is no where near good enough to even achieve a CPL. This isn't a pity party for me, I accept my fate now I'm in my 30s. This is more some encouragement for you, because whenever you have bad days, feel negative which everyone does from time to time. Just remember what a privilege it is to be able to fly. It's only recently though that I've realised that it's not actually flying that interests me; it actually makes me nervous; it's the aircraft and all its systems, life support and structure etc which really invigorates me when I learn further about them! All the best Oli! edit: I just watched that you got your trial flight aged 12 too haha. I saved up my Xmas money to get mine from Argos in 1999 for 100quid at the time haha.

@@mccarey5932 You can wear glasses as a pilot, there's just certain eye conditions which prevent being able to gain a class 1 medical certificate. When I was 17 I had tiny white specs in my eyes (not noticeable to me), kinda like cataracts, which can cause all soerts of issues such as small blind spots. But within reason, glasses to correct distorted eye lenses is totaly fine. Good question though.

Just in the interests of transparency and addressing the elephant in the room - to become an airline pilot at 21 will require a substantial bank loan (circa £50k - £120k), usually secured against a family member's property. Concentrate on achieving excellent grades in school first and foremost, then think about how you will raise that kind of money.

Wicked stuff dude, stumbled across this by chance in my recommended videos and was happy it's something cool for once! I was wondering as well what funding is like. Tried looking into it in the UK and just can't figure any way of making it work; most if not all of the schemes open are self-funded, when I look into finance options the loans have to be secured against a property (which my parents don't own), and really can't find any other way of making it work. Am I missing something and do you have any advice please? Many thanks!

I have a question. There are some universities that do pilot training for only £9000 a year for 3 years. Is that the same as normal flight schools and will you be able to get the same jobs as someone who went to flight schools.
