Being born and raised in Japan with an immigrant parents from Bangladesh, I think I had a pretty unique experience. My native language is Japanese but I grew up speaking Japanese in public and Bengali at home. After I was 14, we moved to the US where I learned English as well. Then I met my Norwegian girlfriend of six years (who is now my fiance) through online and moved to Norway, where I learned Norwegian as well. Ironically enough, the only language I seem to have an accent in is Bengali and that's probably due to the fact that I only spoke Bengali with my parents. Knowing 4 languages fluently, (3 of them without any accents) I can say that there is no "perfection". However, I believe anyone can speak any languages and eliminate their accent no matter what the language is. It may take a lot of practice, but it certainly isn't impossible.

You can't speak without increasing expressions. You need quick response when you speak with someone. You can communicate with broken English. Even if you keep speaking, you will not be fluent. You will get better at just communication. I think learning expressions first is better.

I talk to myself and think out loud in English too! It really helps me get used to speak in English. I am still working on English and my English is far away from fluent but I will keep working hard, because there's no magic in learning English. P.S. Here's what my English teacher said: "Learning foreign language is one of the hardest but also easiest things to do in the world. Use it or lose it!" Always in my heart :)

Wow Lorena, I loved your first video talking about your English experience :) I´m also from Brazil (RS) and I´ve been struggling with English a very long time ago. To be more precise, at least TEN years and I don´t still speak English fluently. Actually, my English level (writing and grammar) is lower intermediate, but I consider my spoken English elementary. You know, here in Brazil is very hard to find people who are interested in practice some spoken English, because they´re always very busy at work, at home or with their families.They prefer don´t spend much time learning English. The beginning of your history is quite similar with mine. I loved English in High School, I also attended private English classes for around one year and after this, I completely stopped for too many years. This time, I was 25. Currently I´m 38 and I still haven´t found what i´m looking for: the fluency :) Also, I have a cousin who lives in London since 1995 and for my big surprise, she still doesn´t speak English fluently. Most of her friends are Brazilians and they always talk in Portuguese there. Other time she said me she´s having a hard time speaking English. But changing the subject again: I loved your mixed Scottish-british English accent, it´s wonderful :) I wish you post some new youtube videos ASAP. Thank you very much Lorena and greetings from Brazil :) Bye-bye...

I'm also from Brazil and I felt so proud while watching you!😍 As I was getting to know your story I thought: How amazing is this?? because your story is so similar to mine, the passion for this amazing language comes since I was 11 to 12 years old. I remember that I was the only one who actually liked English classes at school, my parents never were able to afford an English course so I've studied and learned it all by myself. I believe that I'm heading in the right direction 'cause I've been using all these tips since I've become fluent!!! You're such an inspiration to me! P.S. Your accent is perfect!!!!

P/s: I love English and I'm 15 this year. Your story did remind me of myself, I always speak English to myself in my bedroom or when riding to school, try to immerse myself in English. For the first 7 minutes of this video, I was thinking:"if there's no Welsh connection, I'm going to be very surprised; what a lovely perfect English-with-traces-of-Welsh (e.g. the beautiful way you say the word "years") accent". Then at 7:02 : Welsh boyfriend/husband. BOOM! You are obviously a very talented linguist, and your accent is beautiful. :-)

Hello, Ysis. Watching this video, I realized how easy is for you to express yourself clearly, and, above all, your accent it's just wicked! I started to learn the English when I turned twelve, but I don't struggled enough and then everything that I learn was down to drain. Now, I'm just thirteen and I can consider myself "Advanced" because I'm able to understand, write and speak really well; and how I got it? Immersion. Full immersion. Learn a foreign language is not just sit in front of a grammar book and try to decorate the rules. Learn a foreign language is listen songs and try to imitate the singer's pronunciation, is search all the time and be curious to improve your vocabulary, is watch videos in English several times till you understand everything. It's be dedicate. It's not quit. And, with just 1 year, I become Advanced. If I got it, you can too. Focus, strength and faith (lol).

I thought you were Indian! Sorry, the British accent with Brazilian skin made me think you were from India. I'm from Brazil too. I loved English since I was a little girl, but I could never pay for a language course as you did. Then I had to learn it on my own. I read lots of books on Wattpad (free), watch videos on KZbin (also free) and try to talk to my professors and classmates at college. I am graduating in English, that is, I am studying to be an English teacher. I had a phonetics professor who looks like an American and has a perfect American accent. When I first saw him I could assure he was American. But he is Brazilian. I'm trying to be fluent and your video helped me a lot. Thank you! MAy God bless you and your family (I just love babies!).

And I think English is not hard to learn. Well, I make mistakes all the time. But as you can see, I was able to write all this text without help. I loved your video. And I really hope you answer my comment.

I found so many similarities between your learning journey and mine. From talking to myself in English in the intimacy of my bedroom, to having discussions with my foreign friend (who happens to be Portuguese) and to reading the Harry Potter series in English at about the same age as you did, I was pleasantly surprised to hear many common points. Your story deeply encouraged me to keep practicing harder, hoping that one day I might achieve your fluency. I wish to put emphasis on improving my speaking ability and I was thinking about starting a KZbin channel in English (most probably one involving books since that's my main area of interest and it also implies approaching various subjects). I'm not even a very talkative person in my native language which is another aspect I intend to work on and hopefully this way I'll gain the confidence to speak out loud and to enunciate clearer in general and subsequently in English. Thank you for the motivation and for sharing your experience!

I did exactly what you did and I have to say that it works. That is the best way to get a good pronunciation, people ask me how I got my pronunciation even though I have never lived in an English speaking country, mind you, you have to study or speak in English every single day, no exception, in front of the mirror or whenever . I have grammar mistakes, of course but I have to say that I see native English people who also have these mistakes.

But now I want to dump all the knowledge in science i have learnt and keep focusing on English instead, i want to be better at English before i finish high school. All the text i wrote here may not important but i just want to tell you that choose the way of yours, the way you enjoy and make you proud , don't lie to yourself or end up depressed like me.

English was the medium of instruction when I started primary school until I finished college, but still, im l grasping the word to complete my sentence. You're right if you start learning the language by learning the grammar rules, then you will not be able to speak confidently. I think we should start by memorizing phrases that commonly used everyday.

Hi Ysis Lorenna,I am an English major in a university and I'm in my second year..I still find it hard to speak English fluently to the extent that I feel like changing my course to other programs that won't need me to speak in English all the time.I grew up in my homeland and only speak my native language.I received English education traditionally at school and during my foundation years.I grew my passion to learning English when I was 18 and I have applied for English courses when I had finished my secondary education. My question is,how do I motivate myself to continue my bachelor's degree in English if I am always discouraging myself whenever I speak English wrongly? I feel like I am the worst English major because people will have high expectations on me as I am an English major.This thing worries me a lot if I were to get a job after I have graduated from the university. Sometimes I even feel afraid to post something in English because I am too afraid of people judging my grammar and of course my English.
@Drakeblood97
@Drakeblood97 7 жыл бұрын
If I may, just stop discouraging yourself and try to see every mistake as a chance to improve. Get excited about mistakes, because it means there's still more to learn! If you ever catch yourself in a rut, don't be afraid to take a breather from learning either, because our brains need to rest and process new information too. Learn a lot of colloquial/informal phrases and idioms, also. like I would say to my friends in America when greeting them "sup bro?", "wassup man?", or "yo, what's good dude?", and "Take it easy", "peace" or "have a good one" when I'm leaving. idk how familiar you are with informal American English, but these are extremely casual phrases, as if you've known someone for years.
