great job! and do not worry about lead inside the handle, it is not so dangerous and there is no good substitute for it (tin will crumble inside from the cold, gold or silver is expensive, and copper may not be pierced by a stapler)

Looks great man! Keep up the great work and amazing videos! When i make 3 belly whips, I use whipmakers cord for the 1st or 2nd belly. It keeps the thickness from getting too big but still gives you the 3rd belly

Great video as always. I haven't made nearly as many whips as you have, but I've always used belt leather for the knot foundations. Even with a wrist loop, I'll do the same as you with the small pieces in between the loop ends and then a strip all the way around. You need to shave the leather to get the thickness right, but it's better than playing with lead I think.

Love your videos. I am working on this and can't get the lead sheets for a week or two. I'm using a 7-cord flat braid to fill in the space. it won't help with balance, but I hope it will be a good subsitute for building up the heal knot.

Just saw this, great video and great job. to the question about lead, you can use pewter but you will lose the weight and if you use gold it will be non coast effective but you would have a really cool whip. I think the lead is just fine, just make sure you are including the waring " This item contains lead" so your not responsible for people chewing on the end of their whip😁. Keep the videos coming.

Great video! Gonna start whipmaking here in Brazil because of you, man! I have a few questions if you don't mind: - If I can't find Paracord 650, can I use 550? - What can I use as a substitute for the lacing tape/artificial sinew? - What can I use as a substitute for the hockey tape? Thanks in advance, man! O/
@telldpablo

Also wondering about strand numbers. If we’re switching from one type of paracord to another how do we determine strand count? Take width of said cord to get total width and divide by width of substitute cord to find strand count for it? Thanks
@feiqz6047
@feiqz6047 7 ай бұрын
I've also started whipmaking in brazil, its a little late but i will try to answer the best i can to answer the questions As for materials, 550 paracord will work just fine, strand lenghts may be subject to different lenghts because of the smaller width of the strands, but not so much, on reddit there are complete recipes as for bullwhip strand lenghts and plait counts As for the lacing tape, unfortunatelly there is no viable cheap alternative around here, the best i've found and used is "linha encerada", you can find it at mercado livre for 20 reais a spool, it is nylon thread, which nick used as binding material a few years back, it is great because it will maintain the transition stiffness And the hockeytape, you can find also at mercado livre by the name fita de tecido, its for mechanicals, so autoparts shops should have it in stock, its the same thing, about 20 reais a roll also Hope this helps Also, for amount of paracord, i'd shoot for 130 meters for an 8 ft, about 200 for an 12 foot whip, for a bit of exess, not much 100 meters should be enough for an 6 foot or 7 foot whip with an 10 inch handle For the core 550 paracord will work just fine with 4,5 mm BBs, but as for the handle, 5mm threaded steel rod works flawlessly, just will be needed to grind down the end of the rod to fit the paracord, because it is a bit thick to fit into

I doubt ill ever see it again but man... Id love to have it back. Hey Nick ! 'Been following you for a bit now, always wanted to build my own bullwhip (almost impossible to find in France and quite expensive), but never found the time to do so, had many things going one. But you just dropped this vid, the trailer for the 5th movie dropped as well (huge fan of the franchise) and my father just got me an Indiana Jones style hat for Christmas. So I figure it's time to finally get to it ! (Was thinking about a 8ft, seems long enough to have some fun while being accessible for a green horn like me) Thank you for your hardwork, I'll do my best to honor your vids with my build ;) (long way to go but hey, gotta start somewhere right ?)

Nick, I have made 4 of your whips and I think I can make this now, can you help me understand when you use lacing tape, when you use nylon binding, and when you use artificial sinew?
@drachimera
@drachimera 5 ай бұрын
Oh, I found the answer in your current materials video! Use sinew when building the heel knot on the layers or where you don’t need to taper rigidity…. Use electrical tape over the be bees, use sinew to build something up. Use lacing tape OR nylon thread at the transition….. lacing tape binds about 3X faster than thread. Use the lacing tape wherever you need to bind closely together I.e overlaps. Use sinew to bind the handle. Use hockey tape as a mesh to keep binding from falling into the space between braids

I have followed several of his tutorials, and I guarantee this build is not a first whip! I would plan on building at least five whips before you build this one. I built the no bull bullwhip first, it cracks, but it’s not a good whip. Then I followed his guide from 2020. That’s a great whip, but my plat wasn’t perfect. I am now on my third whip, it’s much better! It takes time to get your fingers to track the parachute chord in the right way over the length of a long whip like this and the nots are complicated! Best of luck man! Just dive in and do it!

First of all--stunning job. That is a gorgeous whip, and I hope you're every bit as proud of it as you should be. I'd just be curious to know how long Indy's actual whip is supposed to be--because it always seems to be the exact length the movie needs it to be, whether he's swinging over a ten foot gap or a forty foot chasm.

Yes! I've been struggling to figure that out. There are several broken links from older videos for "Dacron lacing tape." Nick linked to one version of waxed dacron lacing tape in another video that still worked but it was 50lb test and waxed. When I put a lot of pressure on the spool (Nick mentioned using ~40lbs of pressure at one point in this video) the whole spool squishes. Nick's spool doesn't look like that so I'm pretty sure he's using something else. Please let us know what you're using! Even if it's not from Amazon, which means no kick back (I know) but I really want to know what it is!

As far as the staples not going all the way in, when you are working over the layers of lead, they may be hitting the staples from the previous layers. If you mark where they are, as you go, with a perm marker, or a small "dimple" on the lead itself, to show you where the previous staples are, you can avoid overlapping, and possibly hitting those lower staples. =)

just finished this whip. just awesome video to follow. Thank you very much. You have inspired me to start making whips. The first one I made was a micro Snake whip, then a 3 foot snake whip. I made it black and neon green to really compliment the "snake" in it^^ It was a real challange to finish this one but im happy that I made it. I actually really just finished the last turks head (I improvised a little and made it a 3 pass as I used leather instead of lead). It took me plenty of houres haha but it was worth it I want to say thank you! And I want to ask you something too. I really am scared of waxing the whip. It is really nessecary? Will it protect the whip from mud and sth or is it just for the roll-out? I red an article about waxing which said it isnt really nessecary and without waxing you can just wash your whip with water and soak it if it gets muddy/dirty and when its waxed you cant really do it anymore. I am really conflicted tbh I would really appreciate your opinion on the pros/cons and thank you in advance. Only if you have the time of course. Have a nice day :D

bismuth is an alternative to lead that is heavier and can be melted down on a stove top. it will be more expensive but it shouldn't be that much more and it is relatively nontoxic.
@Skinflaps_Meatslapper
@Skinflaps_Meatslapper 2 ай бұрын
It's not a good alternative as it's very brittle. If you tried to mold it around in a sheet like lead, round it off with a hammer, or staple it, it would just break or shatter. The only way you could really utilize bismuth is if you were to cast it into the perfect shape and affix it to the handle using threaded hardware or something of the sort. There's nothing inherently unsafe about elemental lead in a whip, particularly if it's completely covered up and sealed with wax. Elemental copper poses more of a toxicity risk to the average person than elemental lead does, as people generally don't take any safety precautions after handling copper, and the copper oxides and salts that form on the surface are more toxic than lead oxides are. Most problems with elemental lead stems from firearms where lead dust can be inhaled without proper ventilation, and welding, where lead can be vaporized and inhaled. Doctors will often leave bullets in gunshot wounds because it poses such a low toxicity risk...they could certainly remove it, but the amount of damage done by removing each tiny piece would be far worse than the minimal toxicity that lead presents to the body. I would know, I have some in my leg right now, it's been there for almost 30 years now. The kind of lead poisoning you need to worry about comes from organic lead compounds that are readily absorbed by your body...like tetraethyl lead, for example, found in leaded gasoline.
