This long-awaited video would not have been possible without the help of my friend Adam Winrich who shared with me the plans to build this nylon stockwhip. The design is much different from most of the builds previously seen on this channel, but it is a new and fun project that can really help expand your whipmaking capabilities.

Awesome!! Thanks Nick! Regarding indexing/labelling visible strands: When I cut strands for several whips at once, I use a sewing needle to pull a piece of thin, colorful string through the point i want to mark. It stays in place well enough and I can just pull it out later when working on the whips without leaving a visible mark.

Your the vids are highly detailed and very informational. I have a comment about making your own stock whip. Actually more of a request. Is there a way you could show how to start the plaiting with different color strands? the reason I ask is I am highly dyslexic and it is hard for me to keep track. I think with different colored strands it would help me a lot if you could just show me how to begin and then I can get started and understand it better. thank you very much for all your highly informational videos and detailed explanations please keep the good work coming. @@NicksWhipShop Nick, do you remember how long the 6 strands for the handle are? I didn't see in the video where you mentioned this. I did see in your PH whip video where you said each of those 8 strands were about 4 times the length of handle you want to plait. I'll probably use the 4 times method and hope it works. Except for the handle plaiting, I've been finished with this whip for about 2 months. That handle plaiting is pretty intimidating but I am ready to give it a try. LOL.

Nick quick question. I have made a few whips using your directions and they came out great, thanks. When they are finished they look shiny and the colors really stand out. Then I put them in the melted wax. Colors look drab and lifeless. The whip cracks like hell, much better after the wax, but. the whip doesn't look the same. Is there any way to bring the luster back after waxing.
@PablosProjects

I know it’s not my question to answer and this was a while ago, but I’ve experimented with rubbing the round corner of a short piece of 2 by 4 back and forth all around the handle and thong, and it creates a weathered look, and restores the color for the most part. You can also use a pencil, or a smooth object to do this.

I am sorry if I keep typing comments.. I am just writing things as I go through your video. I just wanted to say for you and anyone reading this who might not know... with scissors, always make sure the pin has a tight fit that closes the to blades as tightly as possible, and you can sharpen scissors ( I have tested this many many times now) by using them to cut aluminum foil. Just take a bit fold it over a few times, then cut it into tiny little strips. It will knock off all the burrs, and make the edges more keen.

@nobilismaximus

Doesn’t need to be shot loaded, the leverage from the stock essentially does that same thing as shot loading a bull whip. It’s why snake whips need heavy shot loading as the handle provides zero leverage to the thong.

Made a few dozen whips over the years, most being effortless to crack even with barely a flick of the wrist. Feels like I missed something, my stockwhip thong is so light it is very difficult to crack. I was surprised by the “excess wax” comment. Never had that problem, heated up properly to about 220F and allowed to fully soak as the air escapes, the whip comes out basically dry to the touch and will not make flakes.

Asking as a complete beginner to whip making, if I wanted to increase the length of this to 7ft, how long do my initial strands need to be? Are there any other measurements I should be concerned about?

I really want to start this project!! But I live in a small basement apartment with no workshop. I have a folding table I can use for things like measuring and cutting... I use it when I am making clothes and leather stuff. But this is time-consuming work, and additionally it is impractical for me to keep a vise/clamp attached to either my desk or my folding table. I see for most of this work you are using a threaded rod clamped in place... I can 100% screw in a sturdy hook (like a bicycle hook) to my desk which would let me work on plaiting while I have some cheesy show or movie going on and keep my adhd brain satisfied. I saw at the beginning you used the vise to hold the strands in line with each other. Does it need to be SUPER solidly held in place? I am wondering if I can use one of those potato chip bag closers to hold the strands in place. I can put a hole through it, and then put it over the hook. Do you think this might work? Or do you have any other suggestions? Edit: Oooh I see. You also use the vise to hold it close to where you are plating. Hmm.

Hey Nick, Great Video... As always! Been making Whips using your Tutorials now for a while... You always have the most comprehensive Videos I have found. One Question(s)... Have you ever thought of weighing the Stock (as they do sometimes in AUS)? I did, using Lead Tape and a Coin... Any thoughts on this?

It's a great idea Zodiac, I used some led tape on the heel knot foundations of a recent matched set and it was great!

Instead of plaiting over nothing to begin with, could one not hook the core strand over the little steel rod from the start?

Really like you work Nick - May I submit for your approval - Use a tapered shot pouch at the top where you transition from the flat braid to diamond on whip section. I have an old Aussie whip that has a shot loaded pouch up there. Meanwhile, keep on trucking!

Hey Nick, saw an interesting video years ago where the stock was a steel rod but had a small 1/2 swivel welded to the end and used as the stocks keeper. Tried a similar thing using a threaded steel eye bolt into some aluminum tube (tube is used as camera rigging rails) work really well and would also work well with your design. Also. Wondering if the first braided belly could be impregnated with that rubber stuff you used to use for your heal knots before you became so proficient with braiding them. Great job with the videos- it’s like braiders asmr! Lol.
