Also, I should point out that you should ALWAYS be open-minded. Just because you pick a main doesn't mean you have to stay with them. I just recently picked up some of the DLC characters and have already replaced Greninja and Sonic with Joker and Hero. They may even end up replacing Inkling or Wii Fit Trainer depending on how I feel about them later. Just make sure you're having fun. That's the #1 priority!

If Ganondorf’s not clicking... I don’t really know where to start with. Just try a few different characters of each type. Like try maybe Roy or Ike for swordies, Mega Man and Samus for zoners, and like wario and like fox or something for brawlers. Somethimg like that. Narrow it down from there. Roy is lighter, Ike is heavier. Also, figure out your play style. Really just depends. I dunno I’m not a professional in any way.q

Story time: I was playing random characters with my friend, we had played for like hours and had gone through nearly the whole roster, and than I got Captain Falcon and I was just like, “Dude, I like this character”, and than I found my secondary Snake right after that, and my third character, Ness, the next day :p, I also used Luigi and Ridley but those are for fun, characters who I use when I’m playing casual

For me it’s Isabelle. I never really thought of her but when I heard of her singing in the last animal crossing game I new I had to try her out ;) and surprisingly it worked. I didn’t really want to main her because she was low of tiers list but I gave in. She’s the first character I won with online so I’m very happy that she’s in the game ^_^

My first main was pit/dark pit. One day, I was playing with my friends when I accidentally chose ROB instead of dark pit (ROB was right under dark pit on the menu screen) and the match started. That was when I found out that ROB fit my play style really well and I mained him ever since.

I played Ike and kept on juggling, aerial comboing, and just dominating. I loved Ike’s moves and his nair’s comboed into everything. It was so fun and I really feel like Ike’s character really molded into my playstyle

Back in August before I had the game, I went over to my friend’s house to play some smash ultimate. I was trying out a lot of different characters, particularly the ones I enjoyed playing in smash 4 like Marth, Corrin, and Mewtwo. However, the one that stuck was zero suit samus. And once I got my Nintendo switch and my copy of smash ultimate, I unlocked zero suit and started grinding. About a week into the game, I finally unlocked the entire roster, and found Palutena really fun to play. I played her more, and more, and I got really good with her. So then I picked her up as a secondary, only to then realize that she was just as good as my zero suit. And that is when I maimed Palutena as well. I played more smash with those 2 characters as my primary focus. I was, and still am, super into competitive smash, and I loved using both of these characters at tournaments. However, I soon unexpectedly found Zelda as really fun to play. I started learning her, and although I don’t find her as fun as the previous 2, I still found her unique tools to be really fun. And that’s how I picked up Zelda as a counterpick character. I never anticipated that these 3 characters would be the characters I woudl play the most, but like you said, you don’t choose your mains, your mains choose you.

Main: Young Link Secondary: Zero suit samus Third: Marth Others: Hero and Captain Falcon In smash 4 my main was Link and when I saw the character trailer and saw young link I knew I had to main him. Lucky he was just a faster Link which was all I wanted from Smash 4 Link. Zero suit samus just looked really fun with all her mobility and when I started playing her it was hard to get use to. I started watching tournament sets and saw Marss which is the best Zero suit samus. Seeing him master the mobility of the character was so cool. So for the next month or so I dedicated myself to only playing her and it was really difficult some times because it is really easy to SD with her. But with enough practice and dedication I really believe I have gotten so much better with the character. Anyway I just wrote a whole essay in about 10 minutes so sorry for grammar errors.

Greninja was my main for a long time. I played my first 1000+ games in smash 4 with greninja (it was my first smash game, never played as a kid) And i was really happy with the buffs he got in smash ultimate and used him for a while, and he was even my first character that i got to Elite Smash, despite me feeling like Palutena was a better character for me. I also dabbled with byleth and min min, and so these 4 were my best. When pyra and mythra came out however, everything changed. All of a sudden I was winning games left and right, far more often than with any other character. They just fit my playstyle perfectly. And they're so FUN, being able to switch between characters. Pokemon is my favourite series, but Trainer never clicked. And now that i've gone Pyra/Mythra, it's so hard to go back to greninja as it just doesn't fit my brain the same way. Definitely agree- your main chooses you!

Your main should be someone that just feels natural. You are pressing the buttons and not even realizing it. Smashing combos. Attacking and defending and just having fun. Someone where you do not need to think of the abilities. You just do it. Of course learn them first what button does what. But it becomes second nature. This is how I found Cloud and Corrin. Probably will get hate with both but both feel great. Makes winning a breeze.

After 30+ hours of smash, I believe i have found my main, secondary and tertiary. Main - Kirby, Secondary - Pichu, Tertiary - Captain falcon. I feel very comfortable playing these 3 characters and kirby and pichu are a LOT of fun.

I used Persona 5's Joker A LOT, followed by Dark Pit, Blue Yoshi and Falco. But then I discovered that my four ex-mains weren't cutting it for me anymore like they've been doing for me all these years {mainly Blue Yoshi, Dark Pit and Falco since Joker didn't come out yet}. Then finally, come December 2020, the one-winged angel, the legendary antagonist from the FF series, Sephiroth, arrived and I dropped all of my ex-mains for him in five seconds. Sephiroth has been dominating fights like crazy. I've performed dozens of Shield Breaks, Perfect Shields and Meteor Smashes with him ever since I got him on Sunday, December 20th, 2020 as an early Christmas present. I also use him for Smash and Tourney Mode and he's my most powerful DLC main, the first being Persona 5's Joker before I ditched him for Sephiroth. I've been using Joker since April 2019 and it was finally time for me to change up my playstyle and try someone new for once and that turned out to be Sephiroth.

I wanna share my story now. So, when I started playing smash ultimate, I was 7 or 8. I was watching Pokémon X and Y and I saw Ash’s Greninja for the first time, and I loved it. It was so cool teleporting and I especially loved the Ash Greninja form. Back to smash. So, my dad got the digital game, and he unlocked all the characters. He got it like 2 years after it released.That’s when he showed me the game. I was horrible at it , but I thought the game was cool. I noticed Greninja was in the roster, and I flipped out. It was so cool to see my favorite Pokémon in Smash ultimate. I played with him, and I got good at him. I was so good that my little brother had fits when I just chose him on the roster. I kept playing it, and it got old. Then I took a 1 year break from the game. I came back to it when the entire roster was finished. My dad ( who still played the game ) didn’t have all the dlc, but he did get the last character, Sora. I tried Greninja out again, and I didn’t have that same touch for it. I just said screw it, and tried every single character. On the final character, I had no other characters that I felt good with, but when I played Sora against my brother, it felt like it was ment for me. I wanted a a character with a good recovery, one that’s floaty, and one with a good jab. Sora fit those as much as it could, and I kept playing it. Like everyone says, “You do not pick the main, the main picks you.” It felt like Sora really did pick me. I won left and right and I play him whenever I play Smash.

I ended up playing Joker after I bought him (because why wouldn’t I?) and I really liked his moves n shit. I mean an instant low damage projectile, poison, a grappling hook type attack, a counter, and a unique meter that filled up by taking damage, and drained the same way, that also buffs up your attacks. He fit my extremely aggressive play style perfectly.

My main is Bayonetta. Bayo became my main on accident. I needed help on the Bayo matchup so I played against many Bayos and I didn’t do so well. I lost ALOT of matches and I start to lose confidence. At the time, I mained ZSS because she looked cool and was good but I wasn’t good with her lol. So, one day, I lost a match against a Bayo and I said, “I can’t beat her! I’m gonna learn her play style so I can figure out what to do.” During the course of this, as I progressed and played Bayo, I began to see progress. More matches won than I did with ZSS. I started watching pro players, guides, and montages of Bayo without thinking or anything. I never had so much fun with any character like Bayo! I enjoyed the game much more since then and now I main Bayo and never regretted it!

I've always gravitated towards Kirby, I've been struggling to know what I truly main, I've been through so many characters, Ice Climbers, Mii Swordfighter, Ganondorf, Jigglypuff, and definitely more. I probably will continue to struggle, I've decided I'll main Kirby and just have fun and if I wanna use another character I will, I care more about having fun and improving compared to winning, and there's a lot of fun characters, in the end you can use more than 1 and still have a main, me and my friends have random matches where everybody chooses random and that's a blast. Don't pressure yourself to choose, or to even choose at all, choose whoever feels right.

I started out playing Sonic in Brawl when I was 7. Sonic was my first game series ever, so I was a megafan of the dude. After that, I graduated to fooling around with him and Corrin in Sm4sh when I was 11 because I thought water dragons were cool. And now, here I am at (almost) 17 and I'm currently trying out Wolf, who I love for his moveset, and Inkling, who I just think is slippery, fresh, and fun, deciding on if I wanna replace one of the two or not. Personally, I really liked Yoshi and Kirby as characters, not to battle with, just the characters. When I got smash, I thought: "Why not use Kirby as a funny joke." It felt awesome, Yoshi was also very fun to use when I chose him, so those are my 2 mains right now (or Yoshi is my main and Kirby my secondary, I mostly just have fun with Kirby without really playing seriously, that's why I play Kirby a lot as well). When I bought Pyra/Mythra, I liked using them and they are my tertiary right now. I don't use them as much in online matches, but rather against CPU's. Edit: I am also pretty good with Mr. Game & Watch, but he isn't as attractive to play for me. He's still a fun character!

for me, my main 5 mains were originally from me just messing around with them before accidentally getting good combos with them or abusing their power. Villager (projectile spam) Ness (PSI Shield air stalling and throws) Joker (everything) Mii Gunner (used the Sans skin at first for the funny but Gunner's power is surprisingly decent all around, moves are 2,2,1,3) Byleth (Byleth is a good character fight me, also Areadbhar air stall helps keep me alive) there some characters I don't use as often but am good at Hero (extremely close to being one of my mains, I just need to learn to stop magic spamming) Piranha Plant (same story as Hero, but I just need a way to deal with her lack of speed) Inkling (Splat Bomb baiting, started using more recently) Mii Swordfighter (kinda first use cause I had the Ancient Set but saw that it had good potential and still figuring out, moves being 3,1,3,2) Lucina (Marth but better, don't use as often) Pikachu (picked up few week ago and still learning)

For a long time, Link was my main, then Hero was released, and a friend of mine defeated me almost all the time, then I choose to try and get 3 main fighters following these rules: 1- it has to be a swordsman character (I'm a sword-geek) or at least a bladed weapon. 2- it has to be from a different game series (so no Sheik nor Ganondorf for me). So, I started with Fire Emblem, and though Chrome really apealed to me after a few sets, the moment I tried Corrin, it just clicked and he become my main, even above Link. Right now I'm still lookin for a third main, and either Shulk and Joker are looking really interesting.

After wandering around with characters in Smash I eventually settled on Cloud because as you said; “you don’t choose your main, your main chooses you”. Cloud was that one character who just sticked with me better than anyone else. I understand not everyone likes him and I do take some fat Ls often but I just like him. In fact Smash is what got me into FF7. I’m considering getting a second and if I were to it’d probably be Shulk or Mewtwo

When I first started I picked Pichu because I saw the combo game and heard he was broken and wanted that. Turns out I didn't. I got a bit better at the game with him but not a ton better. I toyed with some other characters and eventually settled on Young Link. I played Young Link for a long time. He has some amazing tools, projectile combos from across the stage, and generally just wins neutral easily. And I played him for a long time solo main and I was winning and having fun with him, but I never blew anyone out. I'd win with 1 stock remaining most of the time. And my squad strike lineup left much to be desired. Pichu and Mewtwo filled it out, because I was still decent with Pichu and I watched NotBae who made Mewtwo look sick so I used Mewtwo. And then Aegis came out and I started playing them. I loved the speed and the overwhelming frame data, and I'd watched enough Smash that the sword character gameplan made sense to me. Same thing as Young Link. They have some great tools, and winning neutral is easy, but I'd never win in a blowout. But that got me trying some other characters. Corrin felt nice but idk how to juggle, and she felt a little clunky, Meta Knight has some sick combos but neutral is rough and when they don't hit it just feels hopeless, Sephiroth, nah, Byleth, nah, Hero, nah. And then I played Plant. And I started winning with the character. Sometimes I'd win really hard. But it was a joke, Plant has always been a joke, he's bottom tier why go there. But I messed around some more, and added him to my squad strike lineup with Young Link and now Aegis, the Pichu and Mewtwo long dead. And then I got a 3 stocks to 1 decimation in the midst of a crew battle. And that's when I knew that Piranha Plant is the character for me. He has some rough matchups and I do still love Young Link so I'm a comain at this point, and I have a decent Aegis and Corrin, but holy smokes I finally have the gimmicks and the sequences and the reads and the you are just dead. Go to the blastzone directly to the blastzone do not pass go do not collect $200. And I'm loving it. Sure it's hard as a low tier. But it's fun, and I'm anxious to try him out at my local when it works to go again. Now to try Diddy Kong who is one of my favorite video game characters and also fits my playstyle somewhat

That's great! One thing I want to mention, though (that I'll possibly cover in a future video) is to really figure out what your goals are with your 5 characters. I want to win squad strike tournaments, which is the only reason I have 5 characters that I use. Otherwise, I stick predominantly with my main (whom I now use more like 90% of the time). Your team is filled with great characters, but lots of people also have found easy ways of beating Ridley. Is your goal to win or to win *specifically* with Ridley? For example, even though Robin isn't usually considered one of the best characters in the game, I use her instead of Pikachu, Mario or Zero Suit Samus because I feel like Robin is part of my identity as a Smash player, and I won't have fun switching her with someone else just to win. That being said, I'm lucky that even though she's not broken like some of the top tiers, she's still at least pretty good from a meta standpoint. Sorry if it feels like I'm harping on that one character choice. I just want you to really think about what your goals are and why you're using the characters that you are.

Main: Ganondorf Secondary: King K. Rool Tertiary: Robin (male and female versions; I like both of them) Others who I enjoy: Ridley, Lucina, Chrom, Bowser, Corrin, Byleth, Samus/Dark Samus, and Link. There are a few other characters I like using, but I don’t nearly use them as much as the ones listed above. I was a Bowser main in Smash 4, so I thought I would probably use him in Ultimate as well. Well, I did, but somehow it just didn’t feel right. I prefer using characters that hit hard and can take a hit, so tried out some of the other heavy hitters, and the two who stood out to me the most were Ganondorf and K. Rool. Ganondorf may be considered to be “bad,” but I’ve found that (when used correctly) he can be an unstoppable force. As for K. Rool, he has the normal “heavy” play style, but also has some projectiles and (in my opinion) the best recovery out of the heavies. The others, I just thought, “they look cool, so why not?”

After years I’ve finally found a main, Ganondorf, probably not the best character to main but I’ve played everyone extensively on the roster trying to find a main and I’d always want to come back to Ganondorf, his big hitboxes, his outrageous damage and two big dumb moves are things I simply can’t live without, my secondaries and tertiaries are also big and strong, Bowser, Sephiroth, Mewtwo and Terry

My main is Joker, I played him every now and then back when he released but I really started playing him a few months ago bc I needed a really good character for competitive and he's one of the best in the game according to tier lists, but I also really enjoy playing him. He basically has everything, combos, kill moves, projectiles, and even a reflector My main used to be Pac-Man bc his fruits and projectiles are fun, but I've been playing Joker more so I guess Pac-Man is my secondary now Also from the video, I feel like some people should listen to tier lists based on how they play. If they want to do well in tournaments then picking a good character can boost your odds in winning, but you can still find who you enjoy playing the most from the more limited character selection

I chose Samus as my main because I was on my Metroid phase at the time and I thought having the longest grab in the game would be funny (it is), and also just really liked the rest of her kit, morph ball bombs are cool. Donkey Kong is my 2nd main because heavy weights are fun and I liked his moveset. Then Fox as my 3rd main but really I just needed someone with a reflector because I play a lot of casual item games with my friends and it happened to be him I probably use samus like 50% of the time, Donkey Kong and Fox both 20% of the time and the rest 10% a random character from a list of like 10 fighters who I somewhat know how to play as so the game never gets boring

I’ve played Zero Suit since Brawl just because I like her. It wasn’t until recently that I found out people are actually good with her 🥲 but it got me really excited because now I can practice in a way to actually beat people. I also play inkling. Those are pretty much the only ones I have ever gotten used to playing with. I’ve tried my ass off to play with Peach but always resort to using her assmash. But I also love Samus so I play her for fun 😌

I used to main Toon Link and Sonic, but after playing a bit of randoms I found that I really liked Pac-Man. I started playing him more and more and now he's my main. I also picked up Terry after getting him in randoms as well, and I find him just as fun as Pac-Man.

I just made a tier list based on how good I played every character. I did 2 to 3 battles with my brother. It lasted a few days, but it was very worth it. I did this recently though, so I still had some characters I was good at going in. There were some characters I liked to say I had "hidden potential" with, like Samus/Dark Samus, Ganondorf, and Pyra/Mythra. Pyra/Mythra REALLY clicked with me though. My 5 best characters are: 5. Ridley, 4. Steve, 3. Incineroar, 2. Pyra/Mythra, 1. Banjo & Kazooie. Pyra/Mythra and Banjo are pretty much tied, and they are very far ahead of Incineroar.

really good video. I used to main Robin but dropped them after my results at locals started falling (primarily due to the fact that I was going up against many rushdown characters and Robin is notoriously bad against those.) Now I'm at the stage where Zelda is my secondary and Marth is my tertiary, but cannot find a main. Thankfully, your video has given some guidance, so thanks. Currently, I'm trying out characters that are better able to deal with rush down characters, ( so peach, etc) but I don't want to main a character that everyone else uses. Do you have any suggestions?

I don't see anything wrong with using a character everyone else uses, although I see where you're coming from. (I refuse to use Wolf or Fox under any circumstances) Honestly, the only thing I can recommend is to practice with different characters until you find one whose playstyle makes it easier to win against those difficult matchups. The fact of the matter is, the more you practice with one character against another, the better you'll get at it. I could say try using a specific character like Duck Hunt or Palutena, but just because I recommend someone in particular doesn't mean that you'll be as good with that character as you would be with another. You might think Duck Hunt and Palutena are terrible matchups, which make that question hard to answer. If you want my honest advice, make a battle arena titled "Use Peach" and make it 2 players max. Then you can experiment with different characters until you find one you feel more comfortable with. Hope this helps.

It took me a while to find a main. I had a lot of success with Samus, Byleth and Pokemon Trainer and Mr. Game and Watch. Never felt satisfied for a long period of time playing any of them. Then one day just playing around the roster online tried MegaMan and he's been it ever since. So much fun for me playing the goofy little guy.

For me, my main is villager. When i first played smash i always wanted to play steve, but since its a dlc character i never got the chance to unless i buy it so i wanted a character thats similar to steve judging by the game and that character was villager. Another thing i was looking for was how silly the character is and how it differentiates from the entire roster. Characters like villager, mr game and watch, steve, etc, in my opinion just feel like they shouldn't be in a fighting type game with strong character in their lore. Villager is literally just a villager, and i find that cute and silly. I like annoying characters and villager fits that criteria as well wether its getting hit in the face with bowling ball or getting side b, fair & bair spammed into oblivion. Villager just felt like the character i wanted to practice and use the most after getting obsessed with it when it originally was suppose to be a replacement for steve. I highly recommend you try him out, hes a pretty under rated character and can be really fun to use. :3

When I played smash ultimate for the first time I was playing on my friends switch and chose Yoshi but it didn't feel like I was good enough with him so I wanted to use someone else. I chose Lucario and my friend (who had the game for 3 years more experience at that time) said that Lucario is like a low D tier character. After he said that it was on, he did beat me but I went much better than Yoshi and actually put up a better fight (took 1 stock instead of 0) after we were done playing I jokingly thought to myself, I'm going to main Lucario to mess with my friend who said he's bad. When I got the game for myself and started using Lucario I actually started really enjoyed playing him. I still main him now.

I play dozens of characters in this game. But my best & most fun characters are Richter(&Simon), Terry, Cloud, Samus(&Dark Samus). Those are *technically* only 4 characters, and i also think everyone should have a top 5 for multiple reasons. Most of them have already been stated in the video. I'm heavily leaning towards Robin, but Pikachu, C. Falcon, Pit(&Dark pit) and Kirby are also up there.

I mained link in Brawl and Wii U, but link feels somewhat slow in ultimate, and is missing the clawshot and gale boomerang. Young Link became my main for a bit because it's the most similar to brawl, but adjusting to his much smaller attacks compared to link seemed to be a slight disconnect, although I got pretty decent. I really like Link's playstyle of limiting the options your opponent has, but if he's too slow or too small and without the tools I love then it dosen't quite seem right. One thing I found interesting with young link is that I can to a degree take my Link from brawl and speed it up to Ultimate's speed. So then I realized I want a bigger character that's mid weight. (Not as floaty as kirby or Jiggily puff, not as heavy as bowser) but something that would be somewhat huminoid so I can relate to the character, and be able to have lots of freedom. I tried Corrin being a swordfighter, but also a dragon which I thought was so cool! I found myself bored with Lucinia with her basic slash in every direction for her ariels, but Corrin seemed perfect! A long forward smash with an active hitbox while charging, a projectile that if people think that they are safe just because they jumped over the projectile I can still bite, I can counter, I can stab and have good mobility with my side B, I can push myself back to stage with my wings when I back air, the Up B has good height and a wide range allowing me to sweep enemies into it. And neutral air provided a giant hitbox, and down air provided a good mix up, etc, and there was a counter if my opponents got too greedy. But I wanted to be a little less grounded as I couldn't go off stage much. I wanted more freedom to be able to go all the way to the top of the stage and recover from the bottom. The answer to that was Bayonetta who is my current main, there are some differences, but overall it's similar to corrin and allows for more options. Corrin's side B is like a slide when used on stage, and Bayonetta's side B is a heel slide or an afterburner kick similar to corrin! I was free to use Up-B without any special fall! Up air is similar to corrin's nair if used with bullet arts and can also function as an up air! Down air can easily be interchanged between if you want to land on the opponent with a neteral air, or use the slightly longer time that down air takes to come out to get them to drop shield. It was a bit of a learning curve, but I almost feel as if I don't want to go back to anyone else when I play her as she is the most free character in the game to me with how you don't need combos, you just need the theory to know which way your attacks will send the opponent, etc. When you have your foundations really developed, then you can create your own combos and get creative always suprising your opponent with a different move they didn't expect.

I saw my brother and his friend playing once, I asked if I could join, I played Marth, Link and Cloud Between these three, I played Marth and Cloud mostly, note I was basically a first timer for the game as a whole, but I remember getting a win on both I talked about how Cloud seems to be a simple enough character while becoming a threat if let be, my brother referred to another character I play from a different game, then I realized the similarities tho they are abstract As for Marth, I died three times trying to land his final smash, one time I remember rather vividly, I said “If I land this, you’re dead”, and proceeded to KO myself, I was in hysterics for a while 😂😅
