Unfortunately, the fact that quick play is always ranked makes me feel discouraged to experiment with my main, try other characters, or even play if I’m not feeling “in the zone”. Same tbh. I've got 6 myself that I really enjoy playing. I've narrowed down my top three though for the type of play I'm doing. Ike's prolly my general main, Link for when I wanna play the zone game, and Roy for when I need speed. Outside of that I enjoy messing around with Richter, Robin, and Cloud but they're definitely a lower tier of play than my Ike/Link/Roy game. I've also looked at Lucario, Wolf, and Piranha Plant but I need a lot of practice with Lucario and Wolf to be more viable and while I have a ton of fun with Piranha Plant I already have waaaaay too many characters as is. I've also eyed up Ganon since he now shares some similar moves with Ike.

how to find a main: look at tier lists and pick characters that are mid tier (B tier) or higher, go into training or a normal match and try out the characters moves and see if you like the way the character plays. option 2 pick random and try the character you get. option 3 if you just got the game, each time you unlock a new character, play at least 1 match with them to try them out. the most important thing is to decide what type of character you like, do you like ranged characters with projectiles, or characters with sword or characters with fists, do you like characters with tether grabs or normal grabs, do you like character with high damage charged attacks or quick characters, do you like small and light characters or heavy or medium wight characters, do you like characters with multiple jumps, or characters with attacks that have multiple hits like pit or cloud with his side special, or characters with good aerials or good recovery. just use this to find which types of character youreused to, like some characters have meteor smash or spike attacks, some have sideways recovery and some dont some have slide attacks some have dash attacks that make you muve forward quickly, and so on.

@@Didagg half of the roster is in B tier and up, you will surely find one that suits you there, if someone is below B tier than they would suck, they could have bad recovery, weak attack damage, weak launching power, easily countered, to slow to fight against other characters, are too easy to launch, to big of a hitbox, and so on, im not saying dont find one that suits you, I clearly said find a character that has the attributes that you like, im not saying only to find a main that they enjoy playing, but one that is a good fighter and that suits them and they can easily learn to play them, why would you wanna have a character that suits you if you always lose, you should get one thats good, if youre a pro player you can beat any average player with any character, but thats only because theyre worse than you, the only other reason you would choose a character that suits you with them being bad would just be to easily get used to the character, but you would always lose, and as gamers, we all know losing isnt fun and it makes you not wanna play if you lose all the time, anything below B tier is low tier, aka bad fighters that are outclassed by most of the roster, most people online play characters B tier and up, i you play a charracter below B tier you will be demolished as you would be new to the game and people online wouldbe better than you, you should pick a strong character that suits you, not a weak character that suits you, you clearly didnt read the whole comment.

@@Kayso789 yeah but still pichu is mostly in A tier or S tier on most tier lists but pikachu is mostly S because he doesnt damage himself, but pichu is slightly better because he's faster and has a smaller hitbox, but he is easier to launch, but pikachu is slower and bigger and doesnt damage himself so he is mostly better, but if pichu suits you better because of his speed and hitbox size play him instead, pichu is more rewarding if you get really good with him.

I think there's also some characters that are a low tier but can do incredibly well in certain matchups and are really valid secondaries. Falco for instance is considered significantly worse than Fox, but he's been used in tournaments because he's got some of the best anti-air in the game. The highest jump in the game + up-tilt makes him super good at swatting people and despite his low tier can make him an excellent counterpick for characters that like to get airborne.

I really like the Pokemon analogy, and I want to add on to it. Think about your party being 2-3 characters. You have your main (which is like your starter pokemon), and maybe 1 or 2 secondaries that you're training for a tournament or battle. Every other fighter you use is kept in the PC, and can sit there forever. At any time, you can take one of those characters you enjoy playing and swap them out for someone in your party if you ever get bored.

One thing I would recommend is to have a main but make sure to use other characters that are really outside of your ball park to get rid of bad habits and make sure you’re not a one trick pony. For example, I main Fox and one day I noticed how I jump way too often and constantly go for risky edge guards. After seeing this I decided to play Macky boy for a few days and what do you know, my ground and edge guarding game increased pretty significantly. I also have been playing Ganon recently because I realize that I up tilt all the time so I should play a character where up tilting is a really bad idea so I stop doing that

And DK (who i've played only 30 times) has the best win/lose ratio and I'd definitely never main a heavy character. I main random simply because I find it fun. I’m not playing to be the best player, or get far in tourney. I live for the times where I select random, I get a funny look, and proceed to demolish him/her. I agree with this video, but it really doesn’t address fun. For me, I don’t think I would be able to stick with one character, as I wouldn’t have any drive to continue playing.

Indeed, I mained Ness in Melee, and I just eventually stopped playing. I questioned why after some time, as the game didn't feel interesting to me anymore. I later tried playing again, except this time with random characters only, and my interest held out for much longer. That's when I learned that I have my most fun playing a multiplayer game when my options are randomized. (And I am majorly bugged that Quickplay in Ultimate doesn't have a Random option.) Watching this video, there is a caveat: "The game becomes boring" is a perfectly valid reason to not pick one, as there is no point in playing a game if you're not deriving joy out of it. (Well, unless you're earning an income based on playing it or something.)

Just play Kirby, dude. Winning with low-tiers isn't impossible, many good players have made that very clear. Look at Zaki in Smash 4, placed decently with Dedede. Prince Ramen beat Zero with Palutena. Just accept that it might be harder to main a low-tier and main them.

You should be a Kirby main. Kirby has a good combo game and is fairly hard to punish once he has gotten in. The issues with Kirby are... well, his combo game. His issues are that *he has to get in,* which can be quite hard for a character with such low air speed and range. If you seriously main Kirby you will be able to find the openings where you can get in on and people and do a ton of damage. Not only that but even if you decide not to main Kirby, you should co-main/secondary/pocket pick/(whatever you want to call it) him as he has some odd matchups that he just classically wins for some reason, such as vs Captain Falcon.

If you ever have any problems with coming back from a launch, just down B but please for the love of god, don't make my mistake. check to make sure you're over the platform. also, nothing more satisfying than killing a captain falcon with his own punch.

I especially liked how you said that if you spend a lot of time learning a bunch of characters it can kind of be a waste of time for how could you could have gotten with a few. Pokemon Trainer is three characters. It's worth practicing just one Pokemon and getting good with that Pokemon, learning their matchups, and then learning the next Pokemon. All three of Pokemon Trainer's Pokemon are wildly different and play extremely different from one another, much like how in past games Sheik players did not consider themselves Zelda mains, they considered themselves Sheik mains. Of course, you're always welcome to swap freely between the Pokemon, but the reason you shouldn't do that is the whole point of this video. Although it is completely viable to only use two Pokemon at the max since Pokemon Trainer allows you to play to your personal advantages. At the very least please do not be like those people that only switch because they lost their stock and now they're on their next Pokemon. I can not tell you how many Ivysaurs I fight that lose their stock, then get 0-deathed as Charizard because they don't know what to do with him when they get hit and are in disadvantage, and then just do nothing as Squirtle because they have zero knowledge of how to kill with him when the opponent is above 90%. You may think it won't happen to you, but if you're fighting competent players such as in tournament it will happen to you. Again, Pokemon Trainer is three characters that have massively different use cases. It is viable to swap between Pokemon in instances where you can use one's strengths, such as swapping to Ivysaur for his great ground game and pressure to end stocks or swapping to Charizard as he has two kill throws, but *if you want to improve* then your main goal should be to stick with the Pokemon you like the most and are the best with.

I personally consider Pokemon Trainer three different characters that can be swapped between in the middle of the match, as all three Pokemon are vastly different in terms of game plan and options. It is not the same as something like Marth and Lucina where if you learn one you can do fairly okay with the other, as their game plans are mostly similar. Also, your argument is half-assed since I can make every echo fighter on the same slot as their regular counterpart in the settings. Do you consider the echoes to all be the same character as their regular counterparts despite them having very different playstyles? Besides Peach/Dairy, Samus/Dark Samus, and Richter/Simon, which are quite clearly the same characters, even though they all have at least one notable difference. And on top of that, this also makes all three Miis be put in one slot. Do you consider Mii Brawler, Mii Swordfighter, and Mii Gunner all the same character? If so, do you think Mario, Lucina, and Samus are all the same character?

That is one thing that wasn't really touched on in this video: Some characters are similar enough to each other that what you learn as one applies pretty much identically to the other. This is obviously far more extreme for Echo fighters and doesn't apply quite as well to the Links, Doc/Normal Mario, or the space furries, but the principle is still there. If you've never played Falco in your life but are already good at Fox, you'll probably be able to pick up and play Falco almost immediately with few disruptions.

I've been using Ness since 1999, the way I found him was I saw a Ness CPU use PK Fire on me then used the Side Smash on me and I noticed it was easy for him to get me, and that was the day I found my main! Now, I use 3 mains and yes I do constantly place 4'th - 1'st at my city's locals... - Ness (know everything about him) - Lucas (feels the same in weight, speed, fall speed, and mobility, and he's a semi-clone) - Roy (only pull him out when I fight counter-picks the psykids with Rosalina, Marth, Lucina, Cloud and sometimes Ike or Link) Normally Ness isn't a character to solo main (which I don't) but I like how in Ultimate he has even or slightly losing match ups to the top tiers like... Inkling, Pikachu, Pichu, King K Rool.

If you play smash enough you'll learn what other characters do anyway by fighting a growing variety of fighters. Plus, it doesn't matter if you "know what other characters can do" if you don't know how to deal with it via your main, so it's probably best just to stick with your main. Getting that little jump start by learning what other characters can do will make you better for like the first 100 matches at most, but not even that because you will have spent said matches "learning what other characters can do" making this useless in the long run. If you spend a lot of time on another character you have trouble with, THAT could be beneficial because you're not taking too much time off your main, and you can learn how the character plays and the weaknesses your main can exploit.

Especially so early into the game's release. People focusing on one character will naturally get ahead faster than those trying to focus on 5+ characters. Once you have your somewhat decent character practice with him and see what it is about that character you like and occasionally try another character you think might be similar to their playstyle and that is how I really narrow down who I'm best with.

Ok I have 3 mains. But i have my reasons. If the person up against me uses a powerful but slow character i choose kirby,so i have the strength and speed all into one. I chose Ganandorf if the person up against me chooses a fast character. And use Corrin when I do more than 2 players usually.

When I started ultimate I picked Palutena, kind of at random. I hadn’t played much since melee and was never that great then, which hadnt changed. I was in the goddamn trenches on quickplay for ages and slowly got better through learning the matchups, improving my neutral game, and watching videos of pros play to get ideas. Am proud to say I went from a crap player to almost in elite smash now! Made me feel accomplished! I love Corrin, Roy, and Rosalina too (fun to KO people with a sentient floating star) and DeDeDe (I had a crush on DeDeDe when I was 12 and played kirby’s dreamland..yes I had a crush on a fat penguin villain with a hammer, wtf was wrong with me) and though I’m not super great with any of them I never had to ‘grind’ with them like I did Palu. She’s the character I truly learned with and will always be a Palu main as long as she’s in the game! I just found your channel recently and love your vids, keep up the good work!

Play other characters as well! But if you're practicing for a tournament you might just want to stick with just your mains to practice with. Maybe you just haven't found a character you really like? I can play my main for hours and not get bored.

That’s because they are so boring to play. Their moves are so basic and straight forward. Try Peach she’s super technical but it takes a while to play her well since you need to master the float cancels and the golden height float.

If you have no idea what to do to pick a main, I'd suggest checking your records in the vault. Look at your winrates and most played characters, and make a list of the top 5 characters under each of those categories. Watch VODs of tournament play with the characters you're considering, and decide whether you want to invest time into learning that character. Maybe you're not interested in learning long combos and strings, and you can cut Sheik. Maybe you just don't like Bowser. Keep striking characters from the list until you have few enough you think you can decide between them.

K. Rool is my main. Dedede, Ganon, and DK are my secondaries. Heavies are just so fun to play as (i don't even care about their weaknesses, i just like to do insanely high amounts of damage in battles).

Also a good idea is to pick one of the 64 characters as they have bean in every smash installment and they haven’t changed much so that you have a main for every smash installment

I am personally not that interested in going to tournaments, but I do want to be able to rek everyone online. I like to play lots of different characters, so choosing a main is hard for me. Rn I've chosen pit and lucas but I don't know if I'll change it up cuz I think so many of the characters are so fun to play

I kind of feel that way too. I found a main but after spending about at least 30-60 minutes with my main I experiment with other characters to see who could possibly be a secondary, which means you play with lots of characters and it's fun while not regressing your knowledge so maybe try that. Hopefully you can find a main
