I’ve switched around my main so many times. I finally landed in ness and got pretty good with him. Eventually I figured out that he’s not quite what I was looking for. So I spent around a month or two trying different characters until I landed on joker. I find that joker enables me to do everything I want to do at a high level. I also just enjoy landing his combos and kill confirms like up air drag downs. It’s satisfying. So now that I’ve at least partially mastered joker in a casual sense, before I go further with him I wanna look for a good secondary or tertiary like you talk about to pair with joker and ness. I’ve considered and played almost everyone in the game at this point for at least a week exclusively and know how they all work. I’m just not sure how to pick a third character to take to the next level.

K Rool is considered a Low Tier/Low Mid Tier, DK is a Mid Tier, Bowser is a High Mid Tier/ High Tier, Mario is a Top Tier and Pichu is a High Top Tier/ Top 10.

I have solo mained D3 since Smash 4 and it’s been a little over a year since I got into the competitive scene locally. I learned everything I could about D3 down to his turnaround animation and I still feel like there’s a little more I can add to my arsenal. However, I have come across certain mus that don’t favor D3 and especially don’t favor me (Zelda, Rosa, Pika). Any character that can just wall out D3 and play the long game became a big problem for me. I did experiment with some characters like Pac, Steve, Byleth, Mewtwo, and Sephiroth but I came to realize I would end up with the same problem. Kind of like what you said, I finally decided I shouldn’t pick up a secondary that has similar or upgraded traits of D3. Instead, I picked up a character that has completely opposite traits to D3 which ended up being MK. I haven’t gone to a tournament yet since I picked up MK but based on my online play I’m getting good results! Playing MK has also made me realize how much my aggressive play and fundies need work so, hopefully whatever I learn from MK can transfer over to how I approach as D3.

I actually keep my main in the back. I play to get KOs, not necessarily to win. Samus is the one that does this for me, which is why she's my real main. However, I've started taking on a wide variety just to have fun, learn how those characters function and how to handle them. If I'm on a streak of low performance, I pull Samus out to get the dopamine of a high KO score and then put her back in the toolbox.

Interesting video, I think I learned a few things from it. Personally, I started the game as a Corrin main (she's one of my favorite FH characters, so I thought I would enjoy her). Sadly, I didn't fully enjoy her slower, hybrid style, so I started experimenting with faster, more heavy-hitting characters, and that's how I became a Chrom main, his speed, combos, and power fit my playstyle. But it only exaggerated my main weakness as a player, offstage game. I'm really bad at judging how far I can go, which causes me to miss many edge-guards and potential spikes, Chrom's limited recovery only makes it worse. That's why I've been looking for a secondary or two, I already have a heavy I enjoy playing (DK) so I was thinking. Would a good secondary be a zoner? Or a character with even better disjoints than Chrom, with better recovery. I would be grateful for a tip on that topic.

I'm not the biggest expert when it comes to Chrom's matchups, but it looks like the best secondaries for him would be Fox, Ness, G&W, or Wolf. Chrom's biggest weakness is that he can only fight up close, and if he gets offstage, it's easy to gimp him. I'd personally recommend another fast character with a deflector who can handle matchups against Young Link, Pikachu, Snake, etc.

@@redgerran Hmm, I see. Personally I was thinking about a zoner, but you might be right. I really struggle against characters that can keep away from Chrom, and poke him with projectiles (due to his high stance), and against characters which can easily gimp him. I gave a try to characters like G&W and Wolf, but none of them clicked with me so far.

Red, I have a question. I’ve been watching every “secondary” video I can find, but I’ve never found one that tells me what to do, since I main Pokémon Trainer. Since he fits into all 3 triangle categories, who should I secondary? Do I even need a secondary, since I already technically main three characters?

This is an extremely difficult question to answer seeing as how it really depends on HOW you play Pokemon Trainer. Each pokemon has their own strengths and weaknesses, so if you predominantly use one over another, the weaknesses you have will change. Overall, PT doesn't really have many bad matchups just because of the versatility (s)he has. The worst matchups that I can find (just from the opinions of others who use PT more than me) are Pikachu and Young Link, which each have extremely different matchup weaknesses. Basically, to answer your question, if you want to be world class, just use Pokemon Trainer. (S)He doesn't need a secondary as much as the other characters do. If you WANT a secondary, I'd recommend picking up either a high-tier (Palutena, Fox, or Pikachu would be my recommendations) or whoever you just plain have fun with the most.

While I'm not 100% sure yet, I've thought about using Link as a Secondary. I main PT, but one thing I don't like about them is their Zoning. Sure, Razor Leaf is good, but I don't like using it to zone. Enter Link, who I literally Used to Main and I love his zoning tools.

So i main Meta Knight since smash 4 and now i still main him in ultimate. I tried dropping him a lot of times bc he was unfun to me but i just couldent so i still main him. There times when i don't enjoy him and when i try some other characters i'm like: wow this character can do things that for mk is very hard to do but much easlier. The thing about heavies is they're super easy to juggle. Inkling, Pikachu, Fox, Mythra and Palutena are all super good with stuff like that. Just any character that can keep them from touching the ground for as long as possible is what I would recommend. As for swordies, the way to beat them is either through projectiles or a bigger sword, all of which (besides maybe Fox) you can find from the characters I mentioned.

A tip from someone who plays sword characters, if you camp them back and bait out fairs and other laggy moves you will find the mu much easier. Running away in this game is surprisingly effective against a lot of characters. It may be cheese but you download get a chance to their neutral so I think it’s worth it.

Pit is super interesting because he's what we call an "all-rounder". He's one of the most balanced characters in the game, and his only weakness is being fundamentally not as good as the characters he loses to. Mario is an all-rounder with much more potential, but whether you pick him up (or any secondary) is really a matter of personal preference. I would say for you, look at characters you struggle against and maybe pick up someone to deal with them in particular (like if you struggle against Pikachu, you could pick up Ness for example).

I want to grow as a player, but I find myself using the same move over and over, not grabbing, not shielding, not jabbing, and not using any other moves. How do I get past this?

Sticking to one character. It's literally the best way to get over that hurdle. If you switch to another character, you're tricking yourself into thinking you're playing better, but really you're preventing yourself from developing at a fundamental level. If those are your weaknesses, hop into training mode or play against a CPU. All those options that you never use are now the only moves you're allowed to use. You're forbidden from using your comfort moves until the opponent is at kill percent. If you do that seriously, that should fix your problem.

I call my team the Z Fighters. My main 2 are like Goku and Vegeta. Link and Wario. I’m technically better with Link, but I use Wario more for his play style and tbh I feel more flexible with him. There are just some match ups where Wario is the better character, but usually against try hards and experts, I gotta go with Link. Besides that I have my others depending on the Smash Game. In Ultimate I got Ganondorf aka Picolo, Captain Falcon Aka Gohan, K. Rool aka Trunks, and Donkey Kong aka Tien. I sometimes pull Jiggly Puff, Charizard (Pokemon Trainer), Ike, Banjo Kazooie, Sonic, Little Mac, Luigi, and now Sora out too, but they are like the bench warmers. Hardly ever get used unless I’ve been playing a while or just wanna use them for fun. After that, I play my other favorite for fun like Game and Watch, Pac Man, Dark Samus, Etc. There are also some Characters I just plain suck at like Olimar or Bayonetta.

I would say that Hero would be a good secondary until you get to the higher levels where matchups matter more. Greninja and Hero are a pretty dynamic team, but they do both lose to plenty of similar characters (such as ROB, Palutena and Wolf). Your choice is good, but if you want maximum results, you might need to pick someone who's even further from Greninja's playstyle. For instance: Dabuz uses Olimar and Rosalina, Esam uses Pikachu and Min Min, MKLeo uses Joker and Byleth (kinda), and I use Byleth and Min Min. By using Byleth, I can hit targets who like to stay in the air like Yoshi, Kirby and Jigglypuff, and with Min Min, I can easily take care of projectile users like Samus, Link and Megaman (which are some of Byleth's hardest matchups). Since Greninja is a hit and run character, it'll struggle against characters who can create whatever spacing they need to get you where they want you. Hero does OK in this area, but not as well as most rushdown characters. You might want to consider G&W, Joker, Pikachu, Pit, PT, or Fox if you're looking for a character whose playstyle complements Greninja most. That said, though, Greninja and Hero are still not a bad combination if you want to use them for their own unique strengths.

Link's biggest weaknesses are probably the characters who can reflect all of his projectiles (like Wolf, Palutena and Fox). If you want to combat that, I'd recommend picking up a fast character with lots of combos such as Pikachu, Mr. Game & Watch, or Zero Suit Samus. Link overall is a really good character, though, so as long as your secondary is another character that's at least as good as him, you should be fine! 👌

Links biggest weakness is small slippery characters. I pilot Link at max potential so characters his size or bigger arent much of a problem. My secondary is Pikachu sense he isn't as hard to master piloting and is a better matchup against every smaller character.

I started playing sheik, because i love rushdown, he has really epic kill confirms and even at mid/high level only he is pretty cool to use, but learning sheik alone was tremedously boring. I was constantly running into ness at locals and elite smash so i decided to prove them i can play better, without being a spammer, i wanted people to respect the character. And now, each time i see someone say "this character is annoying" i pick it, i learn it for 2 months, i enter elite smash and smash their ass but without spam. All the characters have a non spam possible gameplay, and my most common motivation to try a character is prove to others than NO, NESS ISN'T ONLY PK FIRE (you forgot pk thunder lol)

What make me laugh is that i main Sheik and play ness and falcon as secondaries, and that these three have non-existant Up B OOS. I see zss and others do nair, jab, up b or upsmash out of shield, but my three characters can neither up smash nor up b, they can only shield grab for a punish.

@@drago2975 That's pretty interesting, although it does show a weakness in your gameplay (no offence). In my case, I mained Corrin for my first year with Ultimate, but recently I switched to Chrom as my main. Corrin simply couldn't keep up with my aggressive, rush down playstyle. Chrom's speed and more practical specials work for me much better. Now I'm seeking a secondary, to counter matchups I struggle with; which are small hybrid zoners. Characters like Pika or Young Link, which can harras my tall ass from the distance, and keep up in close combat, where my aerial attacks can easily miss, and then proceed to gimp me.

@@midnight-fox7456 I noticed two of the weaknesses in my playstyle pretty fast : -I Stuggle a lot against bowser (i destroy the other heavies) because of his down air/down b. Since sheik tend to shield and whiff punish a lot, bowser can simply down b shieldbreak and i'm dead at ledge at 0. -I am unable to play other characters. These characters are so technical for example the psi magnet thingy of ness and the wavebounce b reverse or sheik and her (i dunno its gender) difficult kill confirms like raindrop (impossible online) or the needles into footstool down air up smash. (Again almost impossible online) But it has a lot of advantages : -I mean the swag. Against mewtwo, downkey kong or ridley, that are combo food, you look like Goku Ultra Instinct. -The aerials. I mean, all of their aerials are OP(except Sheik down air, its real poop). Down air into knee with falcon, the infinite amount of aerial that ness can do in one jump, or the monstruosity that is sheik frame data. -In my opinion, at mid level or higher, these are one of the most fun to play, especially sheik. You can go everywhere, do whatever you want, can cheese easily (cough cough invicible up b cough cough), same, the mobility is enormous because of their down b, etc. Altough for your secondary choice for zoners, i think zss can be a good choice, she has good speed, mobility, and you can just down b over their projectiles, land and their faces and then they're stunned. Up b and they are dead quite fast because they usually are light characters
