My rats hoard so much I have abandoned food dishes. Now during free roam I put out a pile of food on my bed and let them take it into their cage one piece at a time. It is a group effort, 5 rats stashing their food in their own special spots. It has been fun for all of us, they enjoy the work and I watch proudly!

I would recommend something to anyone who doesn’t clean out all of the bedding. Put all of the bedding in a big bag. Then clean out the cage and reuse it. Even when the bedding seems clean, the dirt will fall down to the bottom. Stuff like, sand, droppings, food and dust is collected at the bottom.

Thank you for watching! I think rearranging things is okay and can be good to keep them from becoming bored but constantly changing the bedding can definitely be stressful to them! It's sort of like someone coming into your room and removing everything you are familiar​ with!

I was wondering if I should Remove all the bedding each time of a cleaning, people told me to but I thought that would stress them out, and I also use white bedding because it’s a lot easier to clean it that way, because you can see the spots. Glad you are showing this. I pretty much do the same thing! I clean my robos Cage around every two months and I only remove the bedding where he was nesting and where there is an accumulation of food. Many people tend to go a bit over the top with how much they clean it out.

Thank you! It's just not necessary to clean out *all* the bedding not to mention very stressful for your hamster. It's like when you have your room perfect and then your mom comes in and cleans everything up now you have no clue where everything went.

Hi Victoria! Just wanted to make you aware of something that happened to me recently. I’ve never worn gloves when cleaning my hamster cages or any of my animals cages, and some of the poop or pee got into my skin and into my blood and I ended up with a blood infection and multiple abscesses. Though this isn’t hugely common, it was caused by a bacteria called PVL (for short) and if I was left any longer it could have developed into sepsis. Didn’t want to scare you or anything! It’s not something that happens commonly, but I definitely didn’t think it would happen to me! Just making you and others aware :)

That definitely sounds awful! Though I have been cleaning my cages for 10 years without gloves so I would assume it's something that can happen hit or miss. Just like someone can get scratched by a cat and get an infection.
