How I Clean my Hamster Cages!

I get a lot of comments asking how and how often do I clean my hamster cages! Remember cleaning your hamster's cage fully once a week is not good for them and very stressful towards your hamster! A cage above the bare minimum should never be fully cleaned more than once a month, even then you should not remove all of the bedding, simply remove half if necessary and add some new bedding in.

My rats hoard so much I have abandoned food dishes. Now during free roam I put out a pile of food on my bed and let them take it into their cage one piece at a time. It is a group effort, 5 rats stashing their food in their own special spots. It has been fun for all of us, they enjoy the work and I watch proudly!

I would recommend something to anyone who doesn’t clean out all of the bedding. Put all of the bedding in a big bag. Then clean out the cage and reuse it. Even when the bedding seems clean, the dirt will fall down to the bottom. Stuff like, sand, droppings, food and dust is collected at the bottom.

I love your channel since it is very educational and I too am a hamster owner and this is all accurate and close to what my process is like when I clean although since I have had my Syrian for about 2 years now I've learned to spot clean every day and give her treats when I go on trips (such as spray millet) I tend to buy a bag of soft Kaytee bedding and 2 cover the entire cage and I typically have to take out half of the bedding lift some of it and she always poops in a corner so it's easier to find out where to clean, etc. After I'm done I take the soft bedding and put the block in there and start fluffing it out (sometimes if my hamster starts to get restless I'll put her in and she tends to play around and help to fluff it out making the process easier. (Sorry I have poor grammar

I was wondering if I should Remove all the bedding each time of a cleaning, people told me to but I thought that would stress them out, and I also use white bedding because it’s a lot easier to clean it that way, because you can see the spots. Thank you! It's just not necessary to clean out *all* the bedding not to mention very stressful for your hamster. It's like when you have your room perfect and then your mom comes in and cleans everything up now you have no clue where everything went.

Glad you are showing this. I pretty much do the same thing! I clean my robos Cage around every two months and I only remove the bedding where he was nesting and where there is an accumulation of food. Many people tend to go a bit over the top with how much they clean it out.
