I've used an All-Clad Belgian Waffle maker for like 15 years? It's a great appliance BUT, it's so not easy to clean. I tried this technique, and it really helped. Here's how I did it: Preheat the waffle maker on high, and slowly pour water into the grates. (It'll bubble and sputter, be careful), slowly close the lid so it can perform its magic. Let the heat cook off the steam. After a few minutes, turn if off/unplug the chord from the outlet, and open the lid. All of the baked-on stuff should be loose enough to remove, I used a very small wooden spoon to work between the grates. Take a microfiber cloth, lay it on the grates, and moisten it with water, close the lid. Eventually, open the lid, and I used both the cloth and the spoon to get out the little bits I missed. Now, the lids open as it air dries. Yes, it was fussy, if you have the same style of the maker, there's no getting around it, this is what you are going to have to do. The new waffle irons have removable grates, that'll be what I purchase if I ever upgrade.

After using paper towels and trying other methods, I started doing this as well. It works! Just using paper towels I wasn't able to get all of the oil/grease off from around the rim and sometimes the waffles would stick the next time I used it. If you have burnt on oil it may take several times to get it all off using this method, but it will come off.

OK. Been using a ChefMate for five days. FRUSTRATED because my waffles always stick and I have to flip them like a pancake in a skillet because the bottom does not cook. I know---it's the bottom that sticks--the uncooked or only slightly cooked side. So that is the problem. Only the top gets done. So now I am looking for professional ways to clean it and this method does not work. Been waiting over five minutes. It does not steam. I think I need a real waffle maker. I am using what my Mom had left here. She never had internet to get anything good quality. I will have to go online to buy what seems to be every you-tubers choice of a waffle iron.

The plates are designed to get wet, like waffle batter, it’s wet. You can unplug it once it’s hot and it will still steam it. It’s how I clean mine, same way over 6 years now, zero issues.
