This is legendry, I have a couple of 1.6 revisions in my collection, I ignored them because of the ram limit, I may pull them out now and consider trying the ram upgrade. I wonder if this will open the prospect for a 256mb upgrade on earlier revisions.

Still love my OG Xbox. Trying currently to fix a none working 1.0 so I can use it for experiments including the normal 128 mod. My 1.6... no I'd cry if I screwed that one up. Props mate for the work. If I come across another 1.6 I think I'd definitely have a go for the challenge. Your an inspiration and cleverer than me !

I gone and down 2 of my 1.6 xbox in my collection, just want to say HUGE thank you. Such awesome work way above my pay grade lol. Both ram upgrades are in done and successful so thanks again. Need to get a bios that shows ram on my 2T buils, I use origins and xbmc4gamers in my 30 xbox. They boot fine and run but only show 64mb ram. Thanks again cheers Bren

with this method, would 256 MB be possible on an OG xbox? possibly by doing it to both ram spots on the older models... might need some kind of hack to the kernel i guess?

No. This method uses the same chip-select signals as a 1.0 - 1.4 upgrade. There are no other chip-select pins on the northbridge to add more chips.

Ideally yes. I tried to length-match mine. Practically, they seem to work fine with some mismatch.

You should aim to use the same brand RAM within one machine. I haven't tried mixing brands, but it is known to cause issues.

Such a big finding! Just on my first try on a 1.6a Board. The 2 top RAMs are working, such a pain go learn this solder method :D the regular RAM Upgrade is much easier (done almost 30 Boards until now :b). But i‘ve got a problem atm. I‘m on the bottom site of the board, Bank 4 is the chip. I soldered the Chip clean on top, but i missed one Little solderbridge and try to start. The Board doesn‘t even give any sign of life. Now resolder everything two times, removed the brige first of course, the Board comes to live, the Xblast lite LED turns on, but the Eject Ring doesn‘t give me a short red (like on Default Xblast Boot) and give no Video out. But also no frag or something else. Did i fried the GPU…? Even by disconnect the CS for Bank 4, the Board has the same behavior 😵‍💫 Would ne such a bummer if the Board is now only good for parts 😮‍💨 Thanks for any advise! :D

@@ileox4170 70-90 is the right side though? I can't tell you for sure, but the first issue you saw (no power) would line up with showing VSS to VDD. That shouldn't harm the xbox. Your current symptoms sound like memory corruption so I'd go and check the CS pins and pads. Did you check for continuity with a multimeter on all pins? I'm not aware of any Xboxes that have been damaged due to a botched RAM install (including mine).

@@userPrehistoricman Hi again! The 1.6 was stored away some time, but today it finds the way to my bench. I resoldered again, checked eeeevery connection and desoldered the top RAM on Bank 4. Guess what, the Board doesn‘t work as well. I resoldered the original RAM and …. It‘s back to life 😮‍💨 I think the bottom RAM had a Bridge somewhere, i didn‘t check befor resolder it. Ready for Round 2 😈👍🏻

@@SargentoDuke It has been suggested many times but that idea doesn't work. The connections I made for this 1.6 mod are the same connections that a typical 128MB mod makes.

how did you begin learning how to do this, I'm high watching a bunch of modding videos and I'm entertained yet dumbfounded.

I started getting into electronics ~10 years ago. Start from the basics. Get tools for soldering and a power supply and do something basic, like light some LEDs. Then maybe you want to program the lights or make them do something interesting. A big next step is to get into analog circuits and audio is a great way to do that. Build a single-transistor amplifier. Notice how it sucks :) Build a better one! Or if you want to go digital, get a some microcontrollers and make them talk to each other. Digital protocols are a nice mix of analog and digital.

There is a simple answer to this: Because we can. The long answer: The OG Xbox is capable of running some games natively on 720p, but there is just not enough RAM to do it. With this mod, these games can actually improve their performance and some other games can be modded to run on higher resolution.
