The Worst Green Cheek Conure Bite I Have EVER Had

Hey BirbSquad! Let's talk Green Cheek Conures (Parakeet) bites!!! What is normal green cheek conure bites, what is not normal, and also what the absolute worse green cheek conure bite I've ever received looks like.
Although yes we are all totally aware that green cheek conures do not bite anywhere near like a macaw or cockatoo. However, for those of you who aren't familiar with these type of bites or if you have small children, I want you to be aware of what to prepare for. I have had people tell me that their Green Cheek Conure bites are absolutely horrible! On the flip side, I've had others tell me their green cheek doesn't ever break the skin. It all depends on the parrot but just a heads up, this is my personal experience.
With green cheek conures specifically, they aren't typically known for being aggressive. They are more fearful timid birds however, if biting isn't discouraged at an early age, the bites have a higher potential to becoming something much worse like behavioral issues.
I hope you birbs found this video helpful and it gives you an idea on what to prepare for. Yes all birds have their 'quirks' but finding the right parrot that fits your lifestyle is key.
Thank you for watching and I hope you have a good week :)

A pinch, yes, but that Quaker, mine anyway, will peirce the skin and take small chunks, the worst bite was when I tried kiss her through the cage bars, I forgot I had my glasses on, she hates them, she got the end of my nose, looked like Rudolf for 2 weeks

When I first got my greencheek I would let him out of his cage first thing in the morning, he would run up my arm super quick & bite my face. It would really upset me as my family had bought him for me as my mother and sister had just died. I got in touch with the breeder and he didn't know what to do. He said it was because he was a baby and he was just being"nippy" shortly after someone got in touch with me telling me he was the third owner of my bird & the bird wasn't a baby at all. This guy gave me lots of advice, and told me that contrary to what I was thinking the bird didn't hate me but was just overexcited to see me and to try and establish a routine with him. I've had him 6 years now & he's a real sweetie, I tickle him & he tickles me. I think with an older bird, patience is key. I also love your Quaker, he's so cute, my conure is a yellow sided to, but has no red. Thanks for your videos I'm learning loads xx

Some thoughts for consideration for some new bird owners. Between years two and three, a gcc will experience maturity which sets off hormonal attitude swings. My bird lasted until age 4 and my hands became eligible for best hamburger awards. The temptation is to leave the bird in its cage. Don't do that. It only makes things worse because the bird doesn't understand that because it needs the "flock", meaning YOU. Instead of using your fingers to access the bird, offer just the back of your hand and make sure fingers are curled under and out of reach. Understand that birds express disapproval for bad behavior with each other by biting at wings and feet. Unfortunately for us, we don't have feathers to buffer and insulate us from bloody bites. This results in worse behavior on both sides. Do not ever scream or emphasize painful bites in any way. That only adds to the excitement factor and is counterproductive if you want to minimize future biting. As a last resort, I took my gcc to a avian vet for trimming his claws, wings, and dulling his beak for a little attitude adjustment and it worked. The bird was relatively new to me so I took him to the vet so he wouldn't associate me with the process. Similar to a bird adding a word to its vocabulary, emphasis on a particular word, along with the word being something a bird can actually duplicate, will pique its interest and after quietly practicing the sound it will gain confidence and make that word a part of its repertoire for you to enjoy. Finally, I am so glad I endured the pain of all those nasty bites because I couldn't ask for a better life partner than my little green cheek. It was so worth it and believe me there was a lot of emotional sadness and a great sense of loss every time my best friend drew blood. I've learned a lot about recognizing most of the signals and how to avoid them like he'll initiate small nips when he's tired or past time to go to the poopy can or I'm offering him a drink when he doesn't want one..lol. Having survived the painful parts, I can much better appreciate what we have now. There is no treasure like that of a winged creature who prefers being with you than to anyone or anyplace else.

Hey Victoria, Love all the information on your channel. Appreciate the time you take to explain things. I do have a pair of Blue yellow sided conures which are about 3 months old now, got them from one of the breeders near me. Although both of them are comfortable around me, sometimes they are way too nippy and handling 2 nippy birds at once becomes a challenging task. When i get one bird out of the cage to train , the other one gets really mad and becomes very restless. Was it really a bad idea wanting to have a pair of conures ? How do you suggest i go about this situation ?

Just yesterday he grabbed my top lip and he bites and DOES NOT LET GO! He is going to become severely hurt or die, not intentional, but the only way I can get him off is swatting him. I have a GCC and a Cockatiel. GCV is about 6 months old and Cockatiel is a year old. Unfortunately they don't get along so I have to be around when they are out of the cage at the same time. The Cockatiel trys to stay away but the conure pursues him and they bang beaks. I do get what I consider an obnoxious bite from the conure and when he does that I put him back in his cage and normally don't let him out the rest of the day but I do take the Cockatiel out and make sure the GCC sees this. The next day he is normally better behaved and less nippy. I have also learned how to position my hand so when he bites, he can't really get a good hold of any fingers. Can't wait for this phase to end

I went along to collect my first green Cheeked Conure after a lifetime of amazing Cockatiel's I was intrigued and enchanted by what I had learned. I arrived and saw a magnificent juvenile and I was encouraged by its interest in coming to the front of the cage. The breeder went to fetch it but as he did the bird burst past him did a full-on Ninja pose fly and dive at my neck. He drew blood and it hurt like being pierced by a red hot needle. Pain level 11 LOL How could something that tiny, so magnificently beautiful cause so much pain in such a tiny spot? In the car on the way over my pal said how will we know which bird is right for us? I told him - The BIRD chooses You!. I was an old had at birds since a child, but oh boy did I have a nippy bird! He would randomly fluff up - fly across the room and attack, or suddenly take a tiny lump out of your finger, Its that beak, A nasty Nip takes away a tiny amount of skin so washing your hands for days later gets a bit stingy. I was getting desperate so I ran to the store and bought some leather driving (supple) gloves and let him bite till he realised it was pointless - I'm not reacting any more instead of dancing around the room going ooch ooch - much to the bird's amusement no doubt. - That's the activity I had to kill until he learned - NO - it took a few months, that old glove is part of his favourite perch these days. So - two years later I haven't had so much as a panic bite. One year into COVID - I could not conceive of living alone without my little green buddy. PS Enjoyed your videos throughout the journey - thanks x

@@Moonietie I had to wear gloves for way too long, the aim was to teach him it had no effect on me. If you shout and leap around the room - it sends the wrong message. Every time he jumps up he will always "test the branch" with his beak - and he will grip you when he shows affection. if its too hard - suck upur breath in through your teeth as in am OOCH! - in time he learns what TOO HARD is and will immediately go Super Soft. FINALLY hes learned OOCH is Too Hard - Just sorry its taken you a while - but you WILL BE REWARDED

Here because I recently took on a cinnamon GCC since she would not get along with her previous owner’s conure. I’m her third owner now and she is a feisty one. I knew of her bitting behaviors and I want to help change that. She’s really cuddly and loveable one minute then all she wants to do is bite hands the next. If we go to pick her up we get bit, but If she’s the one to initiate being held then she won’t. Any recommendations

One time I was at a local bird store. They have amazing work and cute birds! I went up to one of the cockatoos (which I was holding a bit ago, but he wanted to go down). He had been screaming until I went over to him. I went to pet him, and as soon as I touched him, he bit me. I was bleeding a bit but it didn’t hurt. It was worse than the bite you had. Also I saw a caique parrot that was jumping through the perches at the store to get to me, but someone bought her so I decided (because it is so hard to find caiques in California) I’m gonna get a green cheek. I was stuck between the two anyway.

I’ve been bit by a sun conure which was the worst bite I’ve gotten, but I got bit by an umbrella cockatoo and it was very intimidating. Usually I go to the bird store near me every week, and I’m always cuddling with some bird, usually a cockatoo. There was an umbrella at the store named Trouble, and he seemed super sweet. He was playing, and singing, and just seemed like a happy guy. I asked the owner of the store and she said that he was really friendly so I took him out. For the first few minutes it was fine but then he started trying to get onto my shoulder and he was super strong. He ended up flipping out and attacking my arm and it really hurt and it was bleeding. I still love cockatoos though. Also I have a Rose breasted cockatoo, and he has such a strong beak it’s insane. The only thing is, he only bites when we’re playing, and although it hurts really bad, I don’t get upset because he’s just playing. It’s worth the pain to see him happy lol

Does green cheek conure behavior apply to black caps? They seem very similar. My black cap is EXTREMEMLY bitey and territorial even though he's not scared of me. He'll be sweet if I talk to him and pet him for a few seconds but eventually he'll snap at me for no reason and start growling. His bites are VERY hard. Sometimes he starts to bite but stops himself and takes it out on his perch or his cage. It's hard to interact with him.

Thank you for your videos. They have helped me so much. We are new quaker owners. 6 months old. She is already talking, which we love! "Thank you", "Whatcha doin", kissing sounds, and shakes my hand and loves me to kiss her toes when she does the handshake. I am home most days. Now, that's the good. She loves my phone, I mean she LOVES IT! It is hers! Well, she has made it hers! Lol. I do not use my phone when I have her because she will bite me to get to it if I keep her from it. She does this with remotes too. So, I have removed it from the equation. However, when it rings, she will fly from her play perch towards the phone. She is not fully flighted. She walks to me, climbs up my leg just to get to it. Lol. Funny at first! Not so funny now! She hasn't broken the skin, but they hurt, right on the wrist bone. When she does this, I put her in her cage. This is also an ordeal, because she gets vicious. I have to put a hand towel over her to keep us both safe. Most of the time she is a sweetheart. She has recently chosen my husband over me. She prefers him when just chilling, but is with me all day and knows that I'm her caretaker. They are so smart! Should I keep putting her up when she bites? She doesn't want to go in, she wants to be with me. So, I thought this action would be productive

We were part of a larger group of kids and adults with a whole lot of birds in a line. Needless to say, the treat ended up mostly on my arms and it was just a whole lot of birds pinching at my skin to get it off 😅

She’s started attacking him when he gets home at night. Not nipping, serious biting neck and ears and drawing blood. I understand this may be hormonal but I just don’t know how to stop the behavior.

I have a green cheek. He likes to be in my shoulder and I was fine with that untill he start biting my ear, but the biting was not hard which I was accepting it. But I decided toI start making "shushing" sound when he bite my ear. He kept stoping immediately once hearing the shushing sound. Then !!!!! OMG !!!! He kept biting my ear like as hard as he can. He fucked my ear up I start hating him and I feel sad at the same time. How to get him not biting. I would accept his old little bites , but now he became like want to cut my ear.

My pineapple conure Pistachio made a small hole in my finger. He does not nip he increases pressure and holds it there. He’s a little shit but he’s a baby so I won’t hold it against him I just need to work on it with him. He goes from “oh yes these pets are so good” to a sharp bite.

I have had my Greencheek for 14yrs. He is bonded to my wife and never bites her, and he tolerates me to be his head scratcher. Sometimes he will attack and bite my neck if my back is turned for something I did or didn't do. He has bitten my finger to bleed like yours. But when bitting my neck, it's just a pin prick with no blood, but it will swell up like a wasp sting and feels like it. So I wonder if they might have the ability to have venom in some way. They do come from south America were many animals do.

Okay I've had my GCC for about a month and half now and he/she didnt really bite at first assuming its because he/she was getting adjusted.. that being said I know there mating season isn't till later in the year from my understanding, but here in the past few days he/she has started nesting like behavior & biting and not wanting to step up unless he/she wants to..also I know he/she is hormonal because he/she has been regurgitating and nesting in my hair when I sit in the chair next to the cage...

My grandma had an umbrella cockatoo back in the day that bit her once. We still don’t know why he did it because he was so bonded to her, and it was really random. It tore her hand up so badly. She lived alone and had to call an ambulance because she was bleeding so profusely (she was also on blood thinners, though). She had to have quite a bit of stitches and his beak went through muscle. I don’t think I could ever own a large bird for that reason. They can really do some damage out of nowhere.

I wish mine only pinched when they bite. They bite down, break the skin almost every time and sometimes don't let go. One green cheek and a pineapple. Tried to do the right thing and rescue them. They were 5 years old and kept in a non-visited part of their old house. Been trying to work with them for just over a year now. It's incredibly slow progress to say the least.

Thanks for the video! The other types of bites I wish you added were play biting and affection nibbles. A lot of birds will play bite, or even give affection nibbling but nibbles with a sharp beak hurt, so people mistake play bites or nibbles as mean behavior, and then punish the bird, when really it's not mean it's just energetic and wanting to play with it's owner. How should people recognize play biting, encourage birds to play, but not hurt their owners?

we have one that's taken an actual chunk out of my gf's hand. we got two from a neglected home and have had them a few months now and made a lot of progress but they are both very aggressive so tips to any newbs don't buy an untamed bird. pay the extra money for a hand fed well taken of bird because you might not like what you get otherwise. I've had tamed ones they are way easier to handle. untamed may possibly never become tamed. keep that in mind when you are trying to save money and buy second hand.

I recently got a turquoise pineapple green cheek conure she’s the sweetest and tame but does want to bite, I feel like it’s not out of aggression or a feeling it seems like it’s just something she does (it’s not a habit). The worst bite I got from her was on my pinky finger, when I was typing on my phone she was on my bed and came to me and grabbed my finger, tried regurgitate for like 2 seconds (I do not encourage mating behaviors) then ended up just chomping down what felt like the hardest she could she had her whole beak on my finger so it didn’t draw blood but could’ve I didn’t scream or anything but did get a little startled because of the pain. It was weird because one second she wants to feed me the next she wants to rip off my finger. I compare her bites to a budgie because my budgies bites feel like a (surprisingly) hard pinch expect hers are a lot harder, she has never drawn blood but that doesn’t mean it didn’t hurt.

Oh wow!!! Does sound to me like either hormones or a negative way of trying to get your attention. I totally agree though that yes they may be small, but budgies bites do hurt. One bit me before and it felt like a needle "ish" pinch if that makes sense lol

if this is the worst you've gotten from Yoshi then I'm relieved. When I met my green cheek for the first time it bit me on the index finger and I was like "Okay. So. Do I pull my hand away and tell them off? I don't wanna yell.." and etc and in the process it *really* dug in there. took off about half an inch of skin, give or take, and it started to bleed. The only other time blood has been drawn has been when it nips at my ears. Normally the bites feel like getting a bit of skin stuck in a clamp of a binder.

Hi. Thank you for your videos. They were helpful in understanding Conure behavior. I have a 6 year old conure (jackie) and a 5 year old female (Cookie). Jackie, who I believe is Male, is the cuddlyest of the two of them, ..always nuzzleing up to my lips and allows me to stoke him from head to wings with my lips BUT....sometimes (a lot lately) he will get on to my shoulder in the morning when I am about to clean his cage & refresh his food and bite my ear very hard....even drawing blood. He has also bit my hand for no reason and has drawn blood from my hand as well. This seems to happen all to oftern now. I am wondering if the following has something to do with this: My wife passed away in September and I am wondering if this is happening because he is wondering where she went. They were the best of friends. She was awesome to him. He seems to be angry all of a sudden. She raised him from a baby. He has always been sweet and cuddly and had never bit me o(or her) once in the previous 5 years. She taught him to cuddle and to talk (he can say about 5 or six things). She could do anything with him and he didn't mind. She'd turn him upside down, kiss his belly, pet his back etc. He will not allow me to put a hand on his back or allow me to gently pet his head. He WILL NOT allow me to lay hand on hm. He will come to me when called, get on my finger and we will cuddle for an hour as he chortles and talks contently. He can be sooo sweet. Next day he attacks me for no reason at all. Those bites really hurt. I tried grabbing his beak like you suggested (and saying "no bite") but as soon as I grab it he bites me again. Strangely enough, my other bird (Cookie) used to bite periodically for the first couple years but since my wife has passed away he no longer bites me. Back when he did bite me I would shake my finger at him and say "NO BITE, NO TREAT". Now....when Jackie bites me and I say "NO BITE" the other bird pipe us from his cage and says "NO TREAT". I don't know what to do. This bird is the sweetest thing...until he's not. I tried some of your other suggestions (by saying "NO" and turning my atteniton away). nothing seems to be working. Got any ideas?? Thank again for your fun and informative videos. Terry (Hamilton, Ontario)

Have had my Green Cheek eleven years. He stays with my wife two weeks while I am working out of town. When I come home he wants to attack and bite me for the first two days until I am acceped back into the flock. They are still considered wild and not domesticaded like dogs and cats so they will bite sometimes. But they can be real sweet and cuddely. We love him still.

Find out what he likes. If it’s a toy, or a noise you make, or a treat. My cockatiel is super stubborn and doesn’t like going back in his cage, and he won’t take any treats when he gets angry, but I figured out what it helps when I whistle because he runs up and try’s to get close to my face so he can be close to the song and then I can get him in his cage.

I agree 💯 with everything you days in this video. About the bites... They do pinch. "Normally" is not done as a meanie and that feels like you said..a pinch. Imagine someone closing a pair of pliars onto your skin but not too the point of all their strength... Not crushing it breaking skin. Compared to a budgie or cockatiel ( those suckers have STRRRRONG breaks) it's really nothing. It's really a matter of several things... Their lil tude at the time, and how thick or thin amount of skin they get in their lil beakers. A big hunk with meat... doesn't hurt near as much- nor break my skin as if my burb gets just the top teeny bit of a thin layer ...whooooo buddy- that is the one time I've bled from a greenie. Mostly they are testing, nibbling, trying they're limits. The psi obviously isn't near as much as many many other burbs... Thus resulting in a less traumatic experience. * Now feelings.... Yes they can hurt those with a bite.
