Have you tried to soak your cardboard palettes in a tray of water? Super easy depotting method.

Do you soak it in a very shallow tray of water so the shadows stay dry? I'm very intrigued by this suggestion!

Hey girl! I SO appreciate this video because I have that exact Violet voss palette. I’ve had it for MONTHS and although olive greens and olivey browns are my favorite everyday colors - and what looks best on me - I am just not a palette girl. I don’t use 17 shades in a look. A lot of days I use something to darken my crease and then a special shade all over the lid 😂. Some days I’ll use a combo of several shimmers or do a halo eye etc, but I still much prefer working from my singles vs a palette. I like to look thru and find the exact shade I want. Why should I limit myself to working from one palette of 12 shades, when I have SO MANY OPTIONS?! Anyways, I was curious about depotting Violet voss palettes since I haven’t yet - I have a couple others of hers I plan on depotting as well, so it was great to watch you go thru the process! I’ve had my Colourpop depotted, and some other palettes that came magnetized vs glued in (an old tarte circle one, and an ND 5 pan), but I’m just now starting to venture into biting the bullet and depotting ALL my shadows cause I’m realizing I’m never going to use them otherwise. DREADING dealing with my 4 Huda palettes (tbh I think mainly because I LIKE the packaging - it’s pretty and feels so nice!), but they’re being wasted atm because I never use them even though it’s one of my favorite mainstream shadow formulas, and the special shades rival indie imo. Have you depotted Huda? Or urban decay? Also - I totally noticed that alcohol ruins the formula of a lot of shadows for me too. It’s hit or miss and I stopped risking it lol. Through much trial and error and experimentation, I’ve found that all I have to do to repress any mattes is COMPLETELY break up the chunks into powder. Literally the finest powder particles you can get - it’s gonna take a while but this is essential or it will just reshatter. Then just lightly start pressing it in with your fingers over a makeup wipe to prevent them from sticking to it or picking up chunks as you press (shadow doesn’t stick to makeup wipes, and I’ve found they aren’t wet enough to effect the formula of the shadow by using them on top as a guard). FYI when it’s in fine powder form it’s going to look like you need 3 pans to fit it all; just lightly start pressing it down with the flat edge of a knife or spatula first, THEN cover with a wipe and press harder with your fingers. Then you wanna get a pressing tool (ffs don’t buy one, I use lipstick caps or caps to spray bottles, whatever you have!) and with the wipe still covering it, start pressing with literally all your body weight. If the pressing tool is smaller than the pan you gotta kinda go around it in circles while pressing, each time I press I stand up and put my weight in it. Press until you think it’s good, then press some more lmao😂. That bitch will be just as sturdy as a new shadow! And the formula won’t be ruined cause we didn’t add anything to it. Hope this helps you or anyone else who needs it!

For the plastic palette you can use a soldering iron and push on the back of the palette. The pans pop out so easily. Still do it outside too mush fumes.

Hi! Loved your video, new subscriber! 🤩 I'm trying to depot all my palettes as well, but I'm also trying not to destroy the packagings as my goal is to make them all magnetic, so that I can pick shades individually and make my own colour stories but I can still go back to the original palettes as well. To remove the glue from the pans I just use a normal pencil rubber, it's much easier than with nails ☺️ And to remove the pans from plastic packaging I saw someone using 99% alcohol syringed (is this a word?) in the gap between the pan and the packaging, it should melt the glue! The only issue for me is repressing mattes, I try to repress without using alcohol or any other added substance, but some formulas (bh cosmetics for one) are so hard to repress! I also think that the pan's material is a big factor in repressing, as an aluminium one is too thin and bendy even when repressing! Hope I'm making sense... Kisses from Italy! 🤗🤗🤗

I wish I could help with not destroying the palettes, as seen by my video I definitely don't know how to do that haha! I will have to try your technique for removing the glue. I've tried the alcohol technique and didn't have success but I know that others have! The aluminum pans are definitely harder to work with all around. Thanks for subscribing! Italy holds a special place in my heart because I spent a few months teaching English there!

Hey! I just posted a comment about my method of repressing mattes without alcohol cause I’ve found it ruins the formula as well - you don’t need anything special and it’s tedious af, but it’s worked on everything I’ve tried it on! Which is a lot of shadows ngl. And none of them have reshattered, which is key lol 😂 happy depotting and repressing!?

thank you for your how-to especially on the lorac palette! I used a scalpel tool thingy to cut into the cardboard then removed the layers with a steak knife until i was able to depot the shadows, it worked out great!!

I'm glad that it was helpful! I've found that even though it destroys the packaging it's the easiest way to get the shadows out relatively unharmed.

Hey cheap knives can be just as dangerous! I thought you were going to hurt yourself a few times.a good knife cuts through better imo but this video was helpful I didn’t think of depotting my Lorac palettes and it’s what I need to do.

Thank you very much for doing this! Definitely saved to re-watch while I depot😁 Talking of saving, that cream shadow would have being a good finishing powder travelling companion... Crazy me, I've been finishing up a palette that had run out of fair shades to make my own shift shades(it had many shades with fine glittery parts, it went on nail polishes too) and I mixed other colours to a brown for my hair root(they go pretty fast that way but better than buying new specific one for the hair). I'm gonna use that empty carboard palette to practice what you taught me🙃

thanks for giving me a good reason not to try to repress them with alcohol. I generally put the broken ones in small pot. I know, I'm being too parsimonious, in the end I'll never finish it up, even if keep not buying and restart using it in a daily basis 😩

Ucanbe as a line called Diy Series were the palettes look like the one you make. That's what I wish companies would do. Lots of companies that sell singles, have a lot of packaging around them and as you said they are more expensive than palettes. Don't get me wrong, I'm a sucker for pretty packaging too but once it gets used, it spoils so what's the point? Certainly I don't want to waste my money on something that doesn't cost much to get produced, no matter how pretty it is or how premium is the brand.

OK, maybe I missed a memo...this is the first video of yours that I''ve watched and it was very interesting. Here's my question, however, and I'm being totally serious when I ask this...why depot? I watch a lot of makeup Influencers and you're the first one I've seen do this. Most just buy palette, rate them, collect them, declutter them, hit pan in them, etc. I feel kinda clueless here.

To be able to not be limited to only using the shades with the colors they come with; which gets boring. I depot everything to sort by color family in magnetic palette, then when I see a new palette I like and want, I go thru my magnetic palettes and dupe it. If you have more than 10/15 palettes, you can probably dupe almost anything lol😂. It helps me use what I have rather than always buy more of the same damn shades that I’m never going to use. Let’s face it, we all have our favorite colors and tend to gravitate towards palettes similar to what we love (and already have)! By depotting, I can also make my own color stories when I’m inspired by something I see! It just opens up so many more possibilities, vs just using the same 9 shades in a palette only with each other; or having to pull out 4 big palettes to do a look with variety lol. I get bored and I’d rather use my shadows in different ways than get bored of them and declutter palettes, only to replace them with the same shades next month and repeat the cycle.
