I think the hardest part about stopping calorie counting is the realization that I was generally having disordered eating habits (even if it wasn't anorexia/bulimia etc, it's a shocking realization that I felt more guilt from eating and not eating etc). I think addressing the issues that made me binge eat uncontrollably and reassess what makes me happy. I want to be able to eat what I want and feel good look good. My weight is not lower right now (and that's something I'm dealing with), but I've realized I dropped a pants size than when I was 5 pounds lighter. Trying to focus on these small things, but it's hard motivating myself to workout when I've got so many other things to do work wise. I'll get there one day, but it's good to remember that being that fit person that can happily go for a night out doesn't happen by eating 1200 cals a day (I'm 5'2 so fairly short but eating under for so long definitely slowed my metabolism).

I counted calories for YEARS. Last July, idk what happened but I just couldn't do it anymore. Now idk how I did that every single day 🙃 It has been practice listening to my body. I've gained a few pounds but it's been worth it to me.

I really appreciate everything you said in this video. I've struggled with obsessive "healthy" eating for a long time and I never considered that it wasn't actually that healthy, even though I was miserable. I recently started breaking my food rules, and my life has improved so much. It scares me a lot but I can't deny the benefits.

This came at such an amazing time for me as I stopped counting and religiously tracking. The anxiety levels went way down and I was way less hungry and food focussed. I am grateful for the knowledge of tracking that taught me how to eat balanced but now I rather listen to the cravings of my body because it doesn’t mean eating a ton, I feel like it’s actually less without stress!

I’ve never counted calories but dealt with a very quick and drastic diet change when I had health issues and developed food intolerances. The anxiety around food and feeling full crippled me. Setting healthy boundaries for my thoughts and choices with food was the first step towards healthy eating again. So glad you are spreading this awareness!

OMG YES I feel like my experiences with that was so limited. The FEARRR to eating and feeling full after major gut related health issues. It kills. I went through a whole thing with like retaliating against my body like “oh yeah? Well f you, I’ll eat everything I still CAN though” and I gained weight. I am working on restoring my relationship with food and just simply listening to my hunger cues, which does require a lot of stopping and asking myself “do you still feel hungry?”

This is awesome--- I just stopped counting after 1.5 years of weightlifting/bodybuilding. I have been feeling like the counting is getting in the way of just LIVING my life and that the calorie counters are BOGUS. Each one is different and I can feel my body needing different things at different times... and honestly, I don't want to ignore that--- but rather honor it. Thank you so much for sharing your experience! It's really encouraging!

you inspired me a few weeks ago to take a more intuitive eating approach and it has truly been life changing!! Not only can I use my mental energy for so many other things instead of obsessing, saving, counting, tracking calories.. but it has made me so much more consistent with creating balance. I've been MUCH happier as a result (and even dropped some fat w/o feeling like I was trying). Thank you for everything you do!!!💖

@@abbypollock I have seen friends who count calories and it has been so stressful for them, that I have never counted calories, but made substitutions for healthier options. I think this video is so necessary for people in the calorie counting vicious circle! When I know I shouldn't eat something, I find a way around it with a replacement! I have done this very slowly and gradually but I have noticed my threshold for "sweet" has gone down hugely and overall everything I am having is more healthy. I am CURIOUS what are you thoughts on: changing your bodies baseline/natural/resting fat %? Biolayne was very cheeky and mentioned his at the end of one of his posts and hasn't responded to any of my comments on his subsequent posts asking him to explain more. I relate so much to this! For a while I did calorie counting very strictly measuring almost everything I ate except for when I ate out but then in the past year or so I’ve gone through phases where I stopped counting because I realized how much of my time and energy it took up. At first stopping felt scary because I thought it was the only way to maintain or lose weight and I’d have to do it forever. It wasn’t bad enough in my opinion to be a disorder or seek outside help but it was a source of stress for me. Currently now I haven’t been tracking for the last couple weeks but honestly it’s still a struggle because I worry if I’m eating too much and I’m going to gain weight. It’s interesting and kind of sad how many people are on the “borderline” of disorders but not quite there. I think calorie counting should be viewed as a step in learning about our hunger and food, not a system that needs to be done for the rest of our lives.

Thank you Abby for your job and sharing your experiences and knowledge! I can relate to the content 100%. MFP has helped med a lot. I still like to use it but on the other side during these 2 years I have completely changed my relationship to food and eating. I enjoy eating healthy food, always did.but my biggest problem for the last 1.5 years has been portion sizes. they are enormous and huge craving of protein (meat). How can I go back to normal portions? Should I go back to normal? What is normal for me? it almost scares me when I think to downsize my portions, afraid of not feeling full and satisfied physically and mentally. Could you do a video on this problem and going back on track? Warm regards from Sweden.

Calorie counting is a great tool for anyone looking to control their weight in any direction (losing, maintaining, gaining) because it sharpens your perception of which foods contain how many calories and how much you should eat in general. But it isn't meant for forever! After a few weeks, I just take that knowledge and apply it without having to count calories anymore, it becomes intuitive. If I get off track again or change my goals, I just do a "refresh" and count calories again for a week or so to readjust.

Same, I had the exact same problem. I gain weight because I'm happy, fulfilled and not starving myself. Then I receive a backhanded comment and when I'm skinny, I'm told to eat to that they never really realised they were out of shape until they stood beside me. Calorie counting became toxic and a way to punish myself while at university, at work, and on top of that while having family problems at home. Thank you for this video, I've now become so nervous about "eating out' unless I've memorised the entire menu.

Do you think you could’ve done intuitive eating if you were still trying to lose weight? And when you lost your weight did you find that your hunger adjusted to what I would assume would be a smaller amount of food? Or did your not exercising as much just affect your not being as hungry?
@that21pilotsfan9

I’ve actually lost weight after I stopped calorie counting. I am medically considered slightly obese so my goal is weight loss, but recently I’ve altered my perception of dieting. I’ve realized that I can’t out-train a high-fat/carb/sodium/whatever diet with exercise even if I am in a calorie deficit, especially because I’ve realized I’m pretty sensitive to daily weight fluctuation and bloating. I’ve lost 10 pounds much quicker than I expected from focusing on whole foods instead of the anxiety/guilt-inducing calorie counting. If I really feel like I need to count, I’ll do a rough guesstimate or if I know the count off the top of my head (so not Googling it and increasing the anxiety around it)

Hey you think there is a slow approach to stop counting calories? I counted so long I feel like I forgot all about my natural hunger and cravings. Now I've started to weight my meals and snacks but not track them immediately. Before dinner I track everything I ate in an app to see where my calories and macros are so I can adapt my dinner accordingly. Throughout the day I try to listen to my body and eat whatever I feel like. Sometimes that's already hard. Do you think this is a good start or is it better to go 'all in' right away? Love your videos, you are a huge motivation for me on this journey ❤️

i think what you are doing is great so far! i started eating a lot more intuitively last month, but instead of tracking, I just weigh more calorie dense foods (etc. grains, oil, protein powder, etc.) and it works for me since I've felt a lot less food focused! i also usually eat the same things over and over tho so I feel pretty comfortable with how much I'm eating (although I will eat more if I want!)

LOVE this video. Would love to get your thoughts on this…. I actually enjoy tracking my food, I find it very interesting and empowering. I don’t use it as restriction but as a tool. I was underweight for years due to a medical condition that impacted my digestive system, and because of that I did not know how to eat normally. Tracking helped me get back on track to eating normally and gaining the weight I needed. I find it still helpful today and put no pressure on doing it now. I did try stopping for 3 weeks and found out I naturally under-eat which made me feel horribly. Would love to start a discussion about this….

Calorie counting has never worked for me, probably because it was...boring. My relationship to food as been one of fear, though, and I'm working with my therapist right now to develop a richer relationship with food and the act of making and eating it. That adjective, "richer", is very important because "better" and "healthier" carry that weight loss connotation in my head based on past experience...I'm actually using a meal delivery box service right now to get started on more intentionally making exciting food for myself.

1200 calories sounds really low for someone at your body weight, let alone considering the fact that you are working out. If she's suggesting a low calorie intake for you without regard to your lifestyle or other factors, I would say find a new personal trainer; she doesn't live in your body or know what you're feeling to know an exact calorie number for you. You should still be able to enjoy a diet and foods you can stick to long term without feeling deprived, even if trying to lose weight.

Oh, friend. Trust your gut on this one. I'm exactly your size. 5'6, 148lb today. During a maintenance phase I've been at 150g protein and 1890 calories. Even that amount of protein was WAY to much for me. Very recently Ive decided to just shoot for 100g a day. Its much easier to get that from whole sources and just more realistic overall. I don't want to speculate or make you feel bad, or make you doubt yourseld....but it's gonna a be really hard to exit that deficit and get back into a normal calorie range without putting a ton of body fat back on. Exiting a fat loss phase slowly when you're tired from being on 1200 calories for any length of time is super difficult. Best of luck. I hope you're able to strike a good balance and still meet your goals!

That is WAY too low. Your basal metabolic rate will be about 1500-1600 as is just to stay alive. I'm 5"6 and roughly 150lbs, and I eat about 2500 a day. I am pretty active (7000+ steps a day plus 3-4 gym sessions per week) but people should be eating at least 2000 minimum. I don't count my calories and i eat intuitively but I did track a short period of time and I ate between 2200-2600 per day when active

As a result I gained 70 pounds in 2020 and haven't been able to lose more than 10 pounds since. I have tried to get back into calorie counting and do roughly the same things I used to do to maintain my smaller frame, but none of it is working in the slightest. It has been incredibly discouraging to be this heavy for the last 2 years. I feel like my only option for seeing success is to get professional help at this point. Any advice?
