Just FYI for those who r wondering why Damon always takes so long to fix a local Parisian problem; Donc, buildings in france is normally insured so if something broken you (or your landlord) just have to call the building manager/syndic to call the repairman. Most of the time you don't have to pay/paid by your insurance. So since these service is "free" they don't serve you properly and have a longgg waiting list. Yes you can call your own repairman but it's ridiculously expensive. Like to change a lock for example cost 2000+€. Fixing simple water pipe could cost 8000+€. I guess that's why I became more handy for bricolage since I moved to Paris haha.

Hands down the biggest culture shock of moving to Europe is how landlords and the fixing of broken things in your apartment goes. Not that America is in any means perfect when it comes to having landlords that help out, but it's definitely more of an expectation that when you rent, if something breaks, your landlord/repairman is under obligation to fix it ASAP. Europeans also seem to be way more lax and not prioritize fixing things lmao. Very glad I'm handy and can just do most things myself without waiting around. Glad you finally got your door fixed!

I live in a rather old house in Vence, 21km from the Nice airport. I recently almost pulled all my hair and teeth out trying to get a small fountain installed in a wall of my garden. Nobody ever showed up on time, nobody ever seemed to have the right tools, and nobody ever thought it would be good to actually finish the job. On the other hand, nobody ever needed to use my i-phone charger. Thank goodness I once lived in southern Spain where the concept of 'manana, manana' was born. At least you somehow manage to find the humor in all this.

My husband and I still laugh about the first time we were in France and we were waiting on a train and the counter guy said it was two hours delayed, come back in two hours. So we came back in two hours and he was like “oh, it’s two hours delayed, come back in two hours” and we were like, “you said that last time, so where’s the train now.” And he just looked at us with the most deadpanned “this is not my problem” look everrrr I laugh about it to this day. 😂

wohoo I feel you, after 10 years living in Paris I now have a smooth infrastructure set up for all kinds of repairmen ...so if in need I can hook you up with reliable people. But it took me a long time to get here.
