I looked into this. DEF fluid has ammonia in it. It’s one of the ingredients. I tried this when my truck showing POOR DEF QUALITY. When it was showing this it wouldn’t even do a parked regen. I stopped at Walmart, got a bottle of ammonia and. Poured it in and an hour later the warning lights went out. It’s been working great since then. Now I pour in some ammonia every so often to keep the system clean and it’s been great. The good thing is that my boss told me to do it. That’s why I investigated 1st. I didn’t want to be stuck on the side of the road. I don’t know how you found out about it but thanks for sharing. It worked great.

I don't recomand doing this too often because the store ammonia will eventually compleatly clog the DPF due to the fact that it has other chemicals in it as well and I don't think it is made with "deionized" or " pure wather" so if there is any calcium or sodium in it it will stick to the filter and clogg it up. And that thing is expensive ($7 000 ). if you send a filter to a special mechanic they will coock the soot off the filter for about $1k but if there is lime, they will not be able to restore the filter!

FYI the filter cleans out the soot, DEF only plays a part in clearing the soot off the filter; with a high enough exhaust temp (sufficient load or, while regenerating, high rpm and Jake engaged) the DEF combusts with the soot to burn it off as CO2, water vapor, and N2. The reason for its continuous injection is actually to control nitrous oxide output, which is why we have to use the weird filters that we do with the platinum in it, its the same as a catalytic converter on a car. Here's the irony: If it wasn't for the filter causing NOX increasing in the first place we wouldn't need DEF. We need better filtration systems, or better engines like the Cummins that have low soot/ash output to begin with and no DEF system at all.
@100pyatt Жыл бұрын
The filter doesn't cause NoX , High Combustion temps in presence of excess oxygen cause NoX. Timing advance increases NoX and Retarded timing reduces Nox. Advanced Timing gives better MPG fuel economy, better cold starting and Cooler EGT. For an optimum Fuel Mileage and power Diesel Engine, advanced timing produces NoX and gets Scrubbed by the SCR system which is AFTER the DPF. The order of flow is ENGINE--DOC--DPF--SCR--Exhaust
@thulean.uruk-hai Жыл бұрын
@@100pyatt my bad, I misspoke and shouldn't have referred to the system itself as "the filter" - not a diesel tech, and still a relatively new driver, but as a former Navy mechanical engineer (not to mention a lifelong math and science nerd like my father) I should know better. Been meaning to dig deeper into how the system works, and this was a good insight. Still stand by my statement that it would be better if we could figure out a configuration that did this without the need of scrubbing, there has to be a way and we just haven't grasped it yet. I used the Cummins as an example because of its low ash and soot at the source but I know the overall problem is bigger than that. Fingers crossed the engineers who specialize in it find an answer.
@CreRay Жыл бұрын
@@thulean.uruk-hai Sorry, but no. Engines which reach very high efficiency will have very high peak temperatures during combustion. It's this temperature that causes the oxygen and nitrogen from the air inside the combustion chamber to react with each other and form NOx. NOx is not a product of the combustion itself, but of the pressure and temperature conditions during combustion. This is often misunderstood, in fact I thought the same for many years I'll have to admit. It is efficient combustion that "produces" NOx, not bad or incomplete combustion. Sure, there are ways to reduce the NOx formation but all will always lower the efficiency of the engine. Just look up Carnot efficiency and it will hopefully become apparent to you. In fact, a big factor in the fuel efficiency improvement of most recent truck diesel engines is achieved through the improvements made in the catalyst system, actually allowing to design engines focused on fuel efficiency by lifting the the restriction on engine-out NOx. It has allowed some truck manufacturers to do away with the EGR system completely.

@@CreRay And this is why I've been researching it - am a math/science nerd but not a heavy in all areas. 🤣Thanks for the update, gives me more to dig into. Starting to think the best hope is for researchers to figure out a way to design a catalyst, get away from rare earths. Imagine if one day we found a plastic polymer that had the right config to do it without the platinum in the filter.

There is no specific onboard sensor that would probe and check your DEF quality. Most of the time when you get poor DEF quality light and then engine derating, it means there is a much-complicated issue than DEF quality alone. One of the major issues is the SCR is bad/ partially clogged up or not enough heat is being generated inside of it to keep that chemical reaction going on. 2.- check the dosing valve. My truck gets POOR DEF quality light only in wintertime, never in hot summer, meaning, hot summer temps help to break down that soot inside your SCR. My advice is, don't put ammonia inside your def tank, cuz it's way worse corrosive than DEF. Good luck.

You can program your truck so when you disconnect speed sensor it will not lose any power. If you have a TECH TOOL, there is a line in programing parameters calls tempering speed sensor. Usually your truck programed to cut your power by 50%, in this option you have to change to 100%. after this you will not have any power loss when disconnecting speed sensor.

My god, this is a mechanics frikin nightmare. Spend most of my time fixing a two minute issue only to realise the driver has been playing and given me a days worth of damage to sort out.
DEF is a consumable in selective catalytic reduction (SCR) that lowers NOx concentration in the diesel exhaust emissions from diesel engines. Diesel engines can be run with a lean burn air-to-fuel ratio (overstoichiometric ratio), to ensure the full combustion of soot and to prevent their exhausting unburnt fuel. The excess air necessarily leads to generation of nitrogen oxides (NO x), which are harmful pollutants, from the nitrogen in the air. Selective catalytic reduction is used to reduce the amount of NO x released into the atmosphere. Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) from a separate tank is injected into the exhaust pipeline, where the aqueous urea vaporizes and decomposes to form ammonia and carbon dioxide. Within the SCR catalyst, the NO x are catalytically reduced by the ammonia (NH 3) into water ( H2O) and nitrogen (N 2), which are both harmless; and these are then released through the exhaust.[5]

You should be able to find it in general stores at cleaning product isles. I recently saw in a pilot truck stop an additive that it is supposed to help clean the exhaust system too, it gets added to fuel not to DEF. Be careful with the ammonia as it also has other components in it that will eventually clog up your filter. Another solution is to talk to a mechanic to send the filter to baking, it will make it like new for a fraction of the price (new filter 5-7000$, baking 1-2000$)! Use the ammonia trick only in case of major emergency and on your own risk!

If it happens again, take the truck to a mechanic, if you keep doing this you will destroy your DPF filter, this is only a temporary fix so you can finish your journey and empty the DEF tank, if this keeps happening you definitely need a mechanic. If you clog up your filter, a new one is around $7000, reconditioning a filter (baking) is only $1000, so do it before you completely clog it up (remember that ammonia from store has other stuff in it and the water isn't purified, so you get things like Calcium and Magnesium depositing on the filter and clogging it up). Also if this keeps happening it could be because you may have a faulty sensor!

Hi. Good question. The answer is no!!! A regen is different bad def. You can do regen from the truck menu. If you are in derate, pulling the speed sensor out will get you moving again if you can't start the regen. If you do the regen and it keeps coming back often, without you idelling the truck, then the DPF filter needs to be sent to cleaning. If the truck is idleing a lot, like overnight for AC, then this is normal and you have to start your day with a regen. I hope this helps!

It is used in microelectronics, printed circuit boards, instrument manufacture, pharmacy, washing liquids, etc. In order to obtain the high quality pure deionized water, a multi-stage water purification process can be used."
@handydaddy66345 жыл бұрын
And I did say to do this at your own risk! The sistem is not designed to work this way, the reason I got bad DEF in the first place was a low volume of dissolved urea in the water. So what I did was that I tried to bump it up. With this process you also put in other stuff beside H2O (pure water) and CH4N2O (urea) witch in turn will lead to a build up in the microscopic pores of the filter, leading to clogging of the DPF in the long run. This clogging will not be able to be cooked out (approx 1000$ - 1500$) and you will have to buy a new filter (about 7000$).
