I gained a ton of weight when I moved to the US to start studying. It was mainly because the eating habits and culture are very different from my home country (France), andI would eat more fat, more sugar and as you said I would always be snacking and not just eating at meal times.

I am a grad student but this video is something I can relate very much. I also started gaining weight because I stress-eat whenever I have exams and papers to work on. Add to that the fact that serving sizes in the US is HUGE and I am used to finishing the food on my plate. And with the weight gain, I started noticing how easy I get tired (especially when using stairs) and my clothes started to not fit me anymore. I'm still far from the healthy lifestyle that I want but starting with small things help. Reducing sugar and carbohydrate intake, not giving into cravings that much, walking/running everyday has helped a lot in making me feel better physically and mentally. 😊
@KatieTracy4 жыл бұрын
AH THAT’S ANOTHER THING. Serving size in the US!!! Thank you for pointing that out - I just realized another reason for gaining weight too. Your journey is really inspiring and we’ll def find your tips super helpful.☺️ take care Mae!

That is exactly what happened to me !! I was 107 pounds when I moved to the US for college and I am 127 now as a Sophomore. When I was in high school, I feel like my life was so much more structured. My family cooked very healthy meals and I used to eat at the same day every day and never snack during the day because I was at school/doing extracurriculars all day. Then when I started college, I started studying a lot more, especially towards the end of my freshman year and the beginning of my sophomore year, that I did not even feel like I had time to add exercising to my routine. Also, in high school, my mom did not allow us to eat take-out too much, which is another thing that changed when I came to college. I started eating out a lot and ordering delivery, which I think impacted my weight a lot. And then the dining hall...oh boy. I started going and just stacking up my plate with everything that looked good, because it's so hard to have self control when there are so many delicious things to eat right under your eyes !! And finally quarantine hit, and I literally stopped moving and being active. I used to walk a lot between buildings during the day and stuff, but then this semester, I was just in my chair all day on zoom and boom. HUGE weight gain. Sometimes it's really hard, especially when you are a person who has been skinny their whole life and never had to actually care about what they're eating, but I guess that's a new goal to work towards. Oh! and also! Nobody tells us this but women's bodies change during their twenties and that's totally normal. We are not children anymore so our metabolisms start to slow down a little bit as well. That's life :)
@KatieTracy3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for sharing your story. Wow! Especially that ending bit... I didn’t realize women’s bodies would change in their 20s and it definitely surprised me. Sending you love❤️

Hey Katie, thanks for making this video!! I appreciate how you cared to share about your weight gain story when many around are more focused on weight loss stories. I gained 25 pounds within 4 months while I was on study abroad in the States and that was insane to discover cuz my weight was pretty stagnant for years while I was in Asia (I could eat without thinking much about food and still maintain the same weight). However, while I was in the States, I was perpetually hungry (I was thinking about food every minute of my day), and I found myself eating all the time!! Having access to lots of cheap processed food and sugar on top of my sudden drop in exercise frequency and intensity most probably led to my unprecedented weight gain. (My study abroad college had so much free food as well and who says no to food right?) I gained lots of unhealthy fats and am on a journey to return to my original weight, but this journey has taught me about better eating habits, the importance of fitness and caring for my body!

I kinda had a similar experience. Sense this quarantine I haven’t been able to run and do my track workouts, but instead of gaining weight I lost 12 lbs, which was because of muscle loss, which sucks. Know that quarantine is being lifted I find it hard to do the workouts because of the 12 lbs of muscle loss. Know am losing more fat, so I can get back to a balance of my body, because I don’t think I can gain 12 lbs of muscle back. Thanks for sharing your story Katie, love the videos.

Aw, I'm so grateful to have come across this video. I really didn't think the good ol' freshman 15 would affect me but uh, it sure did and I'm trying to learn that that's okay. It was hard this year with everything online, I barely moved from my bed even though I was dorming on campus, and I was exposed to dining out a heck of a lot more. Now I'm back home and I want to take advantage of the summer to relearn healthy eating habits and reinstate exercise as less of a thing to do when I want to lose weight but to genuinely be healthy. Looking at high school photos can be depressing at times but hey, like you said, it's a blessing in and of itself to have a strong and functioning body :). It's not the end of the world, I have plenty of time to take care of myself and become more mindful of my well-being. Thank you for this video, it gave me a much-needed push in the right direction

I gained 6 kilos (~ 13 lbs) in my first semester at university and having experienced EDs during middle school, that "small" change terrified me. I had that fear of gaining weigth because I had stopped dancing, and this, along with episodes of high stress and sadness, eventually turned into a restriction-binge-purge cycle that only made me gain more weigth and profoundly affected my mental health. Even tough I still struggle with emotional/compulsive/stress related eating, at least I don't purge anymore and I feel I have more control about those bad habits. What I mean is that gaining weigth at the beginning of university is totally normal and we have to be prepared for that. The resistance or bad cope with that could tourn it worse; I genuinely wish I hadn't let that affect me that much because it really repercuted in my grades that year.

I have similar experience with EDs from age 12-20 but college stressed me out so much that it somehow caused me to develop a more normal relationship with food just because i had no mental time or space due to extreme sleep deprivation my freshman/soph years to think about food. Like yes, it was absolute hell to the point that two and a half years later i still can’t talk about that time without crying, but there’s a hell of a silver lining. To me that shows how difficult it is to overcome an ED. I feel you sis 😭 sending good vibes ❤️

Good for you from my perspective, I wish I could gain more weight. It's very hard for me to gain a lot of weight. I'm 31 as of May 29th 2020, but if you saw me in person, you would think I was least 21. With so many gyms and restaurants closed as a result of the pandemic it's been hard for me to gain weight + I can't cook. My underweight reality is a result of genetics.

I’ve gained 12 pounds from quarantine... I used to weigh 99 pounds, but now I weigh 111 pounds. I’m not happy at all because when I gain weight it goes to my thighs and I hate it! 😣 I still have the same diet I had before quarantine, but definitely way less active. When I tried working out for a whole entire month I didn’t lose any weight which is so upsetting. I think it could be because I’ve been staying up late and my sleep schedule is really bad. During the night I eat a lot, but when I had to go to school I couldn’t stay up during night and eat. I think this is why but the problem is I can’t get the motivation to go to sleep early. I’m just waiting till summer is over so I can go back to school and be forced to be more active and sleep more.

Another good idea is to cook your own food - then you know how much oil, sugar and seasonings you are consuming (also you are standing up when you chop the vegetables, stir fry the food and clean up your kitchen afterwards) But Cornell dining is so good - many students continue eating it even after they have moved off-campus!

I used to do cross country and I haven’t even gone to college yet (Class of 2020 😁) but I’ve still gained weight since I stopped. It kinda sucks because at one point I was actually like a lot thinner but I still hated myself. I had really bad eating habits and body dysmorphia (which I still am dealing with) but at least now with this weight gain I have more energy and I’m not like scared of food. I just want to not necessarily lose weight but lose some of the fat I did gain and also go back to strength training to have more muscle (quarantine was not fun in that aspect).

My health teacher would make freshmen 15 seem so detrimental and scary. But in reality its just a part of growing up. You WILL gain weight from changes in lifestyles whether its school, work, marriage and children. 15lbs won't ruin you so if you want to lose it then by all means lose it but stop seeing it as an end all to your health. I wish my health teacher in school told me this.

When I was studying for my board exam I bought a large tub of stik-o and finished it in 1 day. I literally gained 10kg after the board exam. But hey, I passed so I guess that's good? 😂
